This Week s Mass Schedule Tuesday - Thursday, 5:15pm in the Chapel Stations of the Cross Please join us for Stations of the Cross at 5:15pm in the Church every Friday during Lent. St. Patrick s Day Celebration March 17 th 7:00 Organ concert and Reception to benefit the Organ restoration More information soon Parish Finance Council From Father Val-- According to diocesan directives, the pastor appoints the members of the Parish Finance Council. When I arrived, there was no finance council. After consultation, I appointed Sharon Evans, Mike Stengel and Mike Duffy to our Parish Finance Council. Recently, I also appointed Bob Reilly to the Parish Finance Council, and Bob will focus fully on providing oversight of the finances of our St. Patrick Center This new Parish Finance Council has put in a lot of work on a financial analysis of St. Patrick's. I am very grateful for their expertise and commitment to this effort. This weekend, at the end of Mass, there will be an initial presentation on the finances of our parish. On behalf of the council, Mike Stengel will speak during the 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Masses. Sharon Evans will speak during the 11:00 a.m. Mass. I AM MEMPHIS MLK CELEBRATIONS Sponsoring I AM A MAN Reverse March Saturday, February 24 th at 9:00 am To honor King and the 1968 striking sanitation workers, the city of Memphis will host an I Am A Man reverse march. The march will begin at City Hall and travel to the Clayborn Temple, the headquarters for the strike. This is the reverse path of the original 1968 march. St. Patrick Church is registered to participate. We are recruiting members to represent the Saint Patrick Community. Members may park at Saint Patrick (on Pontotoc) and board the school bus at 9:00 to be taken to City Hall for entertainment and to sign a release form. March begins at 10:00 and proceeds to the new I AM A MAN PARK next door to Clayborne Temple (next door to Saint Patrick s). Arrive at Saint Patrick s at 8:45 to ride the bus to City Hall. The bus will follow the March for those who cannot walk the entire route. The Saint Patrick Community will show support for justice and harmony in our city. Our banner Historical note: In the 60 s, the Paulist Fathers invited leaders of Civil Rights Movement in Memphis to meet in the rectory dining room for at least one of the planning meetings for the original march. Members of Saint Patrick s were also represented in the march.

Parish Work/Clean Up Day March 10 th 9:00am 2:00pm IT S FUN! Spend a day with fellow parishioners, make new friends and end the day with a feeling of satisfaction for a job well done. Plus, the less money we spend on maintenance items that we can fix ourselves, the more we can do to help and support our members and community. Your help here is vital plus the MLK 50 celebrations will literally be in our backyard, so we want to shine. Volunteer sign up sheets are available so you can choose your area of interest or expertise, and possible tools you may be able to provide. Some jobs will require more skills than others. Everything from cleaning windows to painting, pressure washing, and minor repairs, and clean up around the yard and even our immediate area. We will also need volunteers to cook up some lunch so we can all share a meal together! Plenty of opportunity to find a way to pitch in! Food & Fellowship Are You Hungry For More? Please join us every Sunday after the morning Masses in the St. Patrick Outreach Center for eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, grits, biscuits, waffles, coffee, juice and other tasty treats from the kitchen of Deacon Eugene. The Center is located behind the church - exit the church using the ramp next to the Altar and then follow the walkway around the courtyard. Results of the House Meetings From the final reports of the 24 "House Meetings" which involved 200 parishioners of St. Patrick's, these are the top five priorities which came forth from our convocation on Saturday, February 10th 1. Communications. Parishioners want a better use of all forms of social media to keep all of us informed about ministries and what's going on within the parish. Also, the need to use social media to let the wider community know about St. Patrick's. 2. Our social outreach. Parishioners want us to build on St. Patrick's legacy of reaching out to the poor and those on the margins--in direct service and also on behalf of justice. 3. Music ministry. Parishioners want us to bring on a Music Director and also a choir. 4. Ministry to the younger members of the parish--including teenagers and also our young adults. 5. Our spiritual growth as a parish-- through small-group reflections and Scripture study. Also, equally mentioned as a #5 is renovation of our buildings on the campus of St. Patrick's. Please pick up your Rice Bowl today! And visit the CRS website crsricebowl.org/

Life and Dignity of the Human Person Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Jesus reminds us that we are all made in God's image and likeness. That means that every human being has a special value and a purpose. We need to care for each other so we can be the people God calls us to be. Encounter Majd Eight-year-old Majd thought his family was going on a picnic. His mother, Lamya, said they would be back home in a week. But when ISIS attacked their home in northern Iraq, the family fled for good. What worried me the most were the kids, Lamya says. Our life was stable and we were doing well; we had a very big house. Our children had everything they needed. But when we fled, I was not able to bring anything for them not even food. Fortunately, the family found an apartment to rent with other displaced families. It is much smaller than the home they had, but it s safe. The children enrolled in a CRSsponsored school, where the routine provides hope, stability and a sense of belonging. Education is very important, says Lamya, especially in Iraqi culture. Lamya received training from CRS and became a teacher at the school. Now she has hope for the future. I really love children, so when I go to class I feel like I am with my family, she says. Her son, Majd, also loves going to school. Majd is so motivated to go to school. He just wants it to be morning so he can go, Lamya says. He is relaxed, having fun and more confident. For Majd, school means a normal life now and in the future. Find more information at www.crsricebowl.org/ Parish Almsgiving In addition to our participation in Operation Rice Bowl globally, each week of Lent the Parish will collect items for the following local charities. Word, Eucharist, Life Word, Eucharist, Life First Sunday in Lent Now in Lent the church has entered the desert with Jesus We are being led by the Spirit and we will face temptations of the kind always around us and in front of us Dr. King identified the challenge in pointing out three evils in our life as a nation But the Holy One sends God s angels to support us in the conflicts as we face temptations from those three demons Consumerism is the face of materialism that lures us from all sides Racism and the attraction of dominance pull us into the system that underpins much of our national life Militarism and the reflex of violence raise their heads in response to threats that rush at us from daily news reports The call of the Spirit to be disciples puts us in a virtual desert where we often feel helpless and alone How can we bring our temptations to our celebration of the Lenten experience and to the center of our Christian life in Eucharist where the paschal mystery draws us closer to the experience of Jesus? The Spirit remains with us even in the desert We might find ourselves outside in deserted places Save Your Box Tops for Saint Patrick s School! Help raise money for St. Patrick s Jubilee School!
