March 4-5, 2017 I Am Journey Week 4: Moses and the Red Sea Exodus 5-15 God helps us do big things. First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time When kids are upset or demonstrating destructive behavior, sometimes it can help to take them aside, get down on their level, make direct eye contact and ask, What do you need right now? It can help you connect much better and faster than simply saying, No! Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group As kids leave, ask them how they crossed the Red Sea in class today! Week 4 of the I AM Journey continues the story of Moses, and how God had big plans for him to help rescue the Israelites from slavery. God helped Moses in a big way, and he helps us do big things too!

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5-minute warning from the presenter) Line up. SAY: God rescued his special family, and he wants to rescue us too! Have kids pretend to do the following actions that they need to be rescued from. (After doing the first action for a few seconds, have kids get rescued with the action in parenthesis): Swimming in the ocean with big waves all around us. (Now let s all climb on a boat to be rescued!) Running away from a big furry bear! (Now let s all climb up a tree to be rescued!) Standing on our tip toes so we don t get near any bugs. (Now let s catch all the bugs in our hands and pretend to throw them outside!) We re asleep and having a bad dream. (Now let s all wake up!) If you have more time, make up new scenarios or let kids share ideas! As you walk into Large Group, encourage kids to put on their listening ears! Remind them that HOPS will be showing us how we should act in Large Group, so we have to listen!

Goal: Kids will (1) understand how God used Moses to help rescue his family and (2) recognize that God wants to helps us do big things too! Why? This story is truly incredible! God made a way for his family when it seemed impossible. It s never too early to help kids recognize God s awesome power and amazing miracles! Tip: Today s activity is interactive, so be sure to get involved and have fun along with kids! REVIEW THE STORY 1. What important job did God have for Moses? (Lead people out of Egypt.) 2. When Moses asked Pharaoh if God s family could go, what did Pharaoh say? (No!) 3. After God s warnings, did Pharaoh finally let God s people go? (Yes!) 4. What got in the way of God s people when they were walking? (They came to the Red Sea and it was too deep to cross.) 5. How did they get across the Red Sea? (God made a path right through the middle!) 6. Once God s family made it across on dry land, what happened to the Red Sea? (It went back to normal and swallowed up Pharaoh and his army.) MAKE IT PERSONAL Have kids line up on one side of an open area, and lay down two pieces of tear-off paper on the floor in front of them. Then tell kids that the paper is like the Red Sea that Moses and the Israelites had to cross, and we re going to pretend to be the Israelites! Two volunteers should each take one of the papers and pull them apart to reveal an opening in between, where kids will walk across. Hold the papers up vertically so that they form a wall on either side of the area that kids walk through; and shake the papers as if they are waves! Let kids take turns walking through the opening while doing different funny actions: Jump, skip, take baby steps, dance, crawl, act like a chicken (or any other animal), twirl, walk sideways, walk backward, hop, etc. When kids get to the other side, say, God rescued his family! Remind kids continually that God helped Moses, and God wants to help us too! (Continued on following page.)

Extra time? Have kids do a coloring sheet. After that, play the Connect Time game again and have kids pretend to do scary things and then get rescued!

*Today we have a new worship song, called I Just Want to Thank You. Watch it beforehand so you can help kids learn the new motions! The script is a bit longer than normal because we don t have a story video, which means you ll be telling more of the story yourself! I Just Want to Thank You: https://vimeo.com/201079936 WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review the beginning of God s story and rescue plan. *Click to play intro music. Say: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kids Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. Video: HOPS Share with others! Say: (Holding up the Bible.) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this is the most important. Do you know what it s called? (Let kids respond the Bible.) That s right, the Bible! It s God s Rescue plan. It shows us how He rescued us from all the wrong things in the world. Say: In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it. He created the sun and the moon, the water and the land, the plants and the animals, and people like you and me! Everything was good. Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) Say: But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and all the wrong things came into the world. Things like sadness and death. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) Say: Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve, and you and me, could be close to God again! Do you know who the Rescuer is? (Let kids say: Jesus!)

GOD PLANS TO RESCUE HIS FAMILY Main Goal: Introduce God s rescue plan. PHARAOH SAYS NO Main Goal: Introduce the Pharaoh and understand why he refused to let God s people go. PHARAOH SAYS YES Main Goal: See how God s family was finally freed, but came to a huge obstacle the Red Sea! Say: God planned to send the Rescuer, Jesus, through a family! But even before Jesus came, God s family got into a lot of trouble. Say, Oh no! (Let kids respond.) They needed a rescue! Say: The good news is, God loves to rescue his people! And today, we re going to learn about how God rescued his family through Moses. Can you guys say, Moses? (Let kid say: Moses.) Good job! Say: God told Moses to go to Egypt and see Pharaoh the king of Egypt. Can you say, Pharaoh? (Let kids respond.) Pharaoh was forcing God s family to work as slaves. Can you show me a sad face? (Let kids respond.) (Click to show image of Pharaoh.) Say: Moses told Pharaoh, God says to let his people go. But Pharaoh was stubborn and he didn t listen to God. He said, NO! Ask: Can you guys all say, No? (Let kids say, No! ) Great job. Because Pharaoh said, No!, God sent 10 warnings called plagues. Let s all count to 10 on our fingers! (Count to 10 along with kids.) Say: Ten times, Moses said, Let God s people go!, but Pharaoh kept saying, No! Was that very nice of the Pharaoh? (Let kids respond.) Nope, it sure wasn t. Say: Well, finally, Pharaoh realized that God was going to rescue his family no matter what. And the 10th time Moses asked if God s family could go, Pharaoh said YES! Can you all show me a happy face? (Let kids respond.) Say: God s family was finally free! Everybody yell, Hooray! (Let kids yell, Hooray! ) Let s watch a video and see what happened next. As we watch, see how God rescues his family AGAIN! Video: Jesus Storybook Bible / God Makes a Way Say: Wow! When God s family were stuck at the Red Sea, did God make a way for them to get through? (Let kids respond.) Say: Yes! After they had been walking through the desert for a long time, they had to stop because they reached the Red Sea. It was way too deep to cross! They didn t know what to do! (Click to show loop of the Red Sea.)

GOD CLOSES THE SEA Main Goal: See how God rescued his family through his amazing power! WRAP UP AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Help kids interact through prayer and worship! Say: Then.something horrible happened! Pharaoh decided that he didn t want to let God s family go. He decided that he was going to go and get them back! Pharaoh gathered a whole army with lots of horses, and they started chasing after God s people. Say: Pharaoh and his army were getting closer and closer to God s family. Meanwhile, God s family was stuck. They had to stop because they couldn t cross the water. Everybody say, Oh no! (Let kids say, Oh no! ) Say: Well guess what? God did a miracle after that. He made a dry path RIGHT through the middle of the sea! (Click to show image of people walking through the water.) Say: The people walked through and they didn t even get wet! God s family made it safely through to the other side. Everybody give me a thumbs up! (Let kids respond.) Say: God didn t want Pharaoh to get to Moses and the Israelites, so He closed up the sea. Now Pharaoh and his army couldn t get through. Finally, God s family was free! Everybody say, Hooray! (Let kids say, hooray! ) Great job. Now let s pray and thank God for rescuing his family! Pray: (Break into small, repeatable phrases.) Dear God, Thank you for rescuing your family, and thank you for rescuing us. Aaaa-men! Set up worship: Are you glad that God rescued his family? (Let kids respond.) Me too! Let s show God how thankful we are by worshipping him with some songs! Song: I Just Want to Thank You Music Video: Come With Me Song: King of the Jungle Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop--like Hops--to their groups.)
