FAITH, HOPE, LOVE WHAT WE NEED TO FINISH THE RACE

One New Man Sunday, August 31, 2014 INTRODUCTION: Seeking God s thoughts on race relations in the body of Christ: I. What is it that defines us? a. Creation in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) b. the Fall into sin (Genesis 3:1-24) c. the Division at Babel (Genesis 11:1-) d. New Birth (1 Peter 1:3) *see Scripture list below 1/

II. What is it that binds us? a. the Gospel (Ephesians 2:13-16) b. the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13) c. Love (Romans 5:5; 1 Peter 4:8; Colossians 3:14; see also 1 Corinthians 12:25-26; Ephesians 4:16; 2 Corinthians 6:14-17) III. What is it that governs us? a. the priority of relationships in the local church (Romans 12:4-5, -21) b. the Scriptures i. discrimination (James 2:1-; Romans 12:16; 1John 3:17) ii. speech (Proverbs 18: 2,13,15,17; James 1:1-20, 26; 3:1-12) iii. divisions (Philippians 2:2-5; Romans 15:5-7) iv. the one-another commands ** see Scripture list below 2/

What might God be up to for us in this? To have us weep with those who weep (Rom 12:15; 1Cor12:26). To have us think deeply about sin and its consequences. To have us check our vain hopes that human institutions can solve spiritual problems. To have us soak our minds/hearts in the Scriptures (Col3:16). to press us to think God s thoughts. to take our thoughts captive to obedience under Christ (2Cor10:5). To cease taking our cues from the world around us (Col2:8; 2Cor6:14), to be countercultural, not being pressed into the mold of this world, but being transformed by the renewing of our minds (Rom12:1-2). To show us our weakness / need/ dependence, and thereby magnify His grace (2Cor12:7-10). To produce personal sanctification through conflict (James 1:2-4). To have us check our relationships. Are we treating anybody in the body of Christ by partiality, discrimination, or oppression (1Tim5:21; James 2:1ff; 1Jn3:17)? Are we continuing to recognize people according to the flesh (2Cor5:16)? To have us fight harder to tame the tongue, that we might bring our speech (including our social media interactions) into conformity with Biblical principles (Prov18:2,13,15,17; James 1:1-20, 26; 3:1-12). To have us wrestle with issues of injustice. How do we patiently endure injustice personally (1Pet2:18-21), while advocating on behalf of others, speaking up for the most vulnerable among us (widows and orphans are the example in James), recognizing that our faith-statements really are useless without such care (James 1:27-2:26). To have us recall our identity in Christ (1Cor1:30). To think about our relationship to corrupt authority. What does it mean to identify corruption AND submit to the governing authorities (Rom13:1-7; 1Tim2:1-4; 1Pet2:12-17)? Increasingly, all Christians will suffer unjustly. We need to prepare our godly response. To have us learn to listen to each other, wait on the Lord, think God s thoughts, and pray. To have us set our minds on things above (Col 3:2). To have us long for heaven, where we will be surrounded by people who do not look like us but who all look like Jesus To increase our practical unity, a real-life, God-wrought unity among people who are different from each other (1Cor 12:24-25). To promote actual love. Love is rich when it comes hard. Requires each of us laying down, living out sacrificial, selfless, Jesus-like love (1Cor 13 - a chapter written to a church marked by division). To be the church; for the world to look in on us and marvel at an inexplicable unity that only the Gospel can produce (John 17:20-21). To increase our affections for Jesus, the ultimate cross-cultural bridge-builder. He was willing to become very uncomfortable for love. Consider His interactions with the Samaritan woman, feeding 4000 in Gentile territory, shocking Nicodemus with his God loves the world talk, not to mention the fact that he tolerated being in the presence of a world of rebellious creatures who neither recognized nor worshipped Him. And He purchased, with His own blood, a people for His own possession from every tongue, tribe, nation, and people (Rev 5:) 3/
