The Beacon November 2018 UMW NEWS Fall is here, the season of thanksgiving. I personally am thankful for all the help we have received through the year. We want to thank Pastor Dave for being chairman of the kitchen committee for guest night and the evening opening and closing prayers. Thanks to all the men who helped that evening, thanks to all the women who came and brought a dish to share. Those women and many more help all year with funeral dinners, jam sales and the bazaar. Our three largest ways of meeting our budget are: #1 the yearly pledges our members give, #2 strawberry jam sales and #3 the Fall Bazaar. Our money is given as a pledge to our local church and local missions, the remainder goes to the conference, national and international missions. Our thanks to God for being our ability to do this. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 13 at 9:30am. Coffee will be served by Chris Stevens and the program given by Mary Nell Simpson. Please join us. Evening Circles meets on Monday, November 19 at 7pm at the church. Morning Circle meets Tuesday, November 20 at 9:30am at the home of Carolyn Stevens. We give thanks to God, Carol Kemper Saturday, November 10, 2018 10:00am to 1:30pm Elmwood United Methodist Church Crafts and Baked Goods Lunch: 11 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Homemade vegetable soup Maidrites, salad, dessert, and drink Closer To Free will be leading worship for one final time as a group on Sunday, November 11 at the 9am and 10:30am services. Come early to enjoy a mini concert at 8:30am. The group is disbanding but you will be seeing members as part of the Adult Worship Team.

Greetings Church Family in the Holy Name of Jesus Christ. In our entertainment-saturated world, we hear a lot of lines from movies. Most are quickly forgotten, but some make us laugh, some make us think and others give us a lump in the throat. But, among the countless lines that have been captured on film, a few have actually changed the way we talk. In The Wizard of Oz, released in 1939, Dorothy says to her dog, Toto, I ve a feeling we re not in Kansas anymore. People quote that line whenever they feel like the world around them has changed. In 1942, the movie Casablanca gave us one of the most romantic phrases of all time, Here s looking at you, kid. It works best if you imitate Humphrey Bogart when you say it. Cool Hand Luke, released in 1967, gave us the words, What we ve got here is a failure to communicate. You ll hear that one when people suffer a complete breakdown in communication. In 2001 s Zoolander, Will Ferrell said, I feel like I m taking crazy pills, which describes how so many people are feeling today. 1977 s Star Wars, Many of the characters in a sticky situation or uncertain situation are known to say, I have a bad feeling about this. That line has been used in all eight Star Wars movies since 1977 to the present. I often say that when I go to annual conference each year! The world of movies, of course, is not the only source of lines that shape our lives. The Bible is also full of great phrases that are remembered and quoted in a variety of situations. Psalm 23 gives us the comforting verse, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want (v. 1). From Jeremiah we get the assurance, For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope (29:11). First Corinthians offers the insight, Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude (13:4-5). In Paul s letter to the Philippians, we find the uplifting words, I can do all things through him who strengthens me (4:13). And in his letter to the Romans, we are promised, We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose (8:28). And, of course, there is the verse that Martin Luther called the Gospel in miniature, John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Another classic comes from our text today in the book of Ruth: Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and you're God my God (1:16). So my question would be to you today, what do your words say about what s going on in your life? Are they helpful? Are they positive? Could they be negative, or criticizing? One of the best words I believe we can say every day and not wait for a particular season or holiday or event, is the words thank you. I heard a quote the other day from someone and it s really challenged me to be more mindful of my gratitude towards all that God gives me every day. The quote goes like this: If you woke up tomorrow morning and only had what you thanked God for the day before- what would you possess? As we come to the season at the end of the year where we gather around the table with food (those fortunate enough to have food) and with family (those fortunate to have family), we say thank you to God once again. It should never be a once at the end of the year thing, it should be a practice that is in every breath, every moment, every opportunity. So on behalf of Linda, Daniel and myself we say thank you, not just to our Creator God. Thank you to the families, members and friends of the Elmwood United Methodist Church for your generosity, for your love, your grace, your support, your encouragement, your leadership and for just being a comforting presence. Thank you for your generosity and support of pastor appreciation month and generously giving a $100 donation in my name to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Blessings, PD

Christmas Dinner Is Coming For several years, our church has eaten a Christmas lunch together on the third Sunday of Advent. That s about to change. Let s face it most of us can afford our own lunch. So, we re going to put our efforts into providing a Christmas lunch for those who might go without. The Salvation Army says their Christmas dinners, complete with turkey and pie, cost a little over $2 each. That s where we come in. On November 18, the Sunday School kids will begin a contest for Christmas tree bragging rights. For a month, each dollar they bring to provide Salvation Army Christmas dinners will put an ornament on our Christmas Dinner Tree. We will keep track of donations from each class, and the one with the highest contributions (based on their class size) will get Bragging Rights as the most generous. The winners will actually be those Salvation Army patrons who could use a good meal. In the meantime, we will be fostering our children s generosity and following Jesus command to feed the hungry. On December 16, adult members of the congregation will be asked to add to the students donations. The money will be delivered to the Salvation Army in time for Christmas. For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. Matthew 25:35a Merry Christmas! How to Be a Perfect Christian Sermon Series for Sundays in November. Utilizing material from the book How to Be a Perfect Christian: Your Comprehensive Guide to Flawless Spiritual Living by The Babylon Bee, this series uses satire to help believers explore what it means to follow Christ. The Bible teaches that none of us are perfect. We are all flawed human beings. Because of Jesus s death, burial, and resurrection, however, we can receive forgiveness of sins. And, with the power of the Holy Spirit, we can better follow God s Word more and more each day.. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! We need volunteers to finish the home for the Selman Family. There is a job for any skill level! Speak to Pastor Dave or Dick Taylor for more info! Community Thanksgiving Service St. Patrick s Catholic Church November 11, 2018 6:00pm
