GOD s GLORY Psalm 19: 1-2, 7-11 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true; They are righteous altogether. Passage One, Assignment 2 6

GOD s GLORY Psalm 19: 1-2, 7-11 10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward. Passage One, Assignment 3 7 Signed

GOD IS GREAT! Isaiah 40: 8, 10-11, 17 8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever. 10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him And His recompense before Him. Passage Two, Assignment 1 8

GOD IS GREAT! Isaiah 40: 8, 10-11, 17 11 Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes. 17 All the nations are as nothing before Him, They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless. Ephesians 2:1-2, 4-5, 8-9 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. God Saves Us! Ephesians 2:1-2, 4-5, 8-9 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), Passage Four, Assignment 2 13

THE PLAN Two-year cycle of Bible passages We have selected Bible passages that are fundamental to the Christian life. We have organized them into a two-year plan. Each passage is divided into age appropriate sections, the older the child, the longer the passage. As a child progresses through the grade levels, he/she will revisit the same passage every two years. This provides review of the section from his/her previous level and adds a bit more of the same passage. Grades K-1: average 1 verse per week Grades 2-3: average 2 verses per week Grades 4-5: average 3 verses per week Typically, we will work on a passage for 2-4 weeks, depending on its length. A twoyear rotation fits reasonably well with budding reading abilities and will allow time enough before the cycle starts over, so that reviewing and adding to previous knowledge will encourage the kids and avoid boring repetition. Program Description 15

WHY THIS APPROACH? Better understanding and best use of children's natural ability to memorize We focus on longer memory passages rather than individual verses to provide the context in which the verses are found for better understanding and application of the passage (eg. 1 Cor. 13 will be remembered as the Love Chapter ). Children are in a developmental period when their brains are best for memorizing. They easily acquire thousands of vocabulary words, names and places by age 3! And have you ever noticed that after viewing a movie or tv show only once, kids can recite entire dialogues from their favorite scenes? Let s make the most of their minds when they are young, so they ll walk in His Word when they are old! Just a few short midweek review times at home will be enough for most children to learn the Bible passages. Of course, it will take effort, but we hope the CrossWalk rewards and your help at home will encourage them. Above all, God s Word will not go out void! We do not want to discourage those children who may not find it naturally easy to memorize! We encourage everyone to do the best they can and not be overcome by what other people are doing. At the same time, learning alongside others and sometimes healthy peer pressure can give great motivation!

HOW DOES IT WORK? Teaching/learning verses: On Sundays, we will teach the meaning of the verses and get the kids started on memorizing Bible Passages in "chewable chunks" over periods of 2-4 weeks (depending on the passage length). Please help your child keep track of the CrossWalk book, to practice the passages and bring it each Sunday to CrossWalk. RECITING VERSES FOR REWARDS When Sundays - children can recite their verses and collect points for prizes at the prize table. Wednesday Club Nights -have your Club leader sign your CrossWalk book & bring it to the prize table on Sundays To whom Your child can recite to CrossWalk leaders, parents, Club leaders, designated "CrossWalk Verse Listeners" What Verses Let's say our passage is Psalm 1. All grades will learn Psalm 1, but the youngest kids will learn only verses 1 & 2, while the oldest kids will learn all 6 verses.

Rewards The power of God s Word, hidden in your child s heart! 1 POINT per verse for: - Saying any portion of a CrossWalk passage eg. any one verse in the Psalm 1 passage =1 pt - Verse listeners initial and date on the line next to each verse recited correctly AND DOUBLE POINTS per verse for: - Reciting entire passage at one sitting with no more than about 3 prompts eg. Psalm 1:1-6 = 12 points! - Receive double points each time you recite a whole passage! Eg. 36 points if you say Psalm 1:1-6 on 3 different Sundays! HOW DO WE FIND TIME TO MEMORIZE? The battle won't go away when they grow up! The Word of God really is the priceless treasure it claims to be, and knowing the Word is the first step to digging up that treasure. Our children can be so busy with schoolwork, sports, and entertainment (TV, video & computer games ) that it's easy for them to feel too busy to learn the Bible! But as parents and teachers, we must help our children set high standards and not make it easy for them to find excuses for not learning the Word. Help your child form these habits early.

Start at the CrossWalk, follow-up at home Check with your child s Crosswalk leader or the chapel website for extra copies of the verses. Put the passages in places the kids will see them often at the table (under a clear plastic placemat?), in the car, bathroom mirror. Establish a regular time to practice EVERY day On the way to school or soccer practice, etc. -- 1 st thing in the morning or last thing at night, while brushing teeth, etc. Encourage your child! Of course, you could add your own rewards to the system we have. Let us know what works for you & maybe we can incorporate your ideas into our program!! Memorize together! Learn the verses along with your child the competition will be good for you, and such an encouragement to your child! Chant or sing verses together! If memorizing Bible verses is a new skill, or simply a major challenge, help your child set a personal goal. Encourage him/her to earn points for at least part of a CrossWalk Passage. Eventually build up to learning entire passages. Studying at home is the key to success for your child!

NASB BIBLE TRANSLATION Although there are pros and cons to various versions, we have chosen the NASB (New American Standard Bible 1995) version. NASB is considered the most literally accurate modern translation, and is the version used by a majority of the preachers and teachers at Hillview. NASB is the version the University of Acts uses, and may ease the transition if (hopefully) our children will want to be part of this course when they become adults. We recognize that NASB is written to a higher reading level than NIV (New International Version). However, when it comes to memorizing something by rote, this should not be a major issue. If you want your child to use a different version, please realize that it may confuse him/her when we practice the verses in CrossWalk since we'll be using the NASB. PRAY FOR RESULTS! Pray for and with your child about this endeavor. It can help you both see the Lord's hand in helping him/her gain this skill! Hopefully, the true reward for each child will be that he/she can apply God's Word in a time of spiritual victory or struggle. We'll work with the students to help them put the Words in their heads, but more importantly we want them to learn to apply God's Word to their hearts and lives. Ultimately the Holy Spirit will be the one doing this work!
