He cited his own personal experience when a case of his sister against a hospital dragged on for more than seven years and had to be settled out of court by reconciliation. The lecture was jointly organised by the Raj Bhavan, Bengaluru, the International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ICADR) Regional centre, and the Bhavan. Governor, Dr. H R Bhardwaj, who delivered the introductory remarks lamented that because of the delays and the high cost involved the poorer sections of society are not getting justice. In this context, he recalled, that when he was a Law Minister in the Union Cabinet, he had planned POORER LOT SHY AWAY FROM COURTS DUE TO DELAYS, COST to set up 9000 rural law courts, though he was not sure what has happened to it. Referring to Sri Justice E S Venkataramaiah, Dr. Bhardwaj described him as a polite, soft spoken personality, well-versed in law. Justice M N Venkatachaliah, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who presided, complimented the organizers for getting up a function to pay homage to Sri E S Venkataramaiah, Dr. H.R. Hon'ble Justice K. Sreedhar Rao, Acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, honouring Hon'ble Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Judge International Court of Justice whom he described as a rare personality. Tracing his legal career, he recalled that Justice E S V started as a teacher of law, who rose to become a judge of the High Court, Sri. H.R. Ananth, Vice-Chairman, BVB, Bangalore, honouring Hon'ble Justice N. Kumar, Judge, High Court of Karnataka 4
before reaching the pinnacle of his luminary career to become the Chief Justice of India. Even after retirement, he served as a professor in the National Law School, Bengaluru, he added. Besides, Mr.Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Judge, International Court of Justice, The Hague who spoke at length on the concept of ADR, drawing parallels of its influence in China and India, Mr. Justice M N Kumar of the State High Court also spoke on the qualities of head and heart of Sri E.S. Venkataramiah. Among the other dignitaries who were present at the REMEMBERING E.S.V. FOR QUALITIES OF HEAD, HEART function, was Mr. Justice K Sreedhar Rao, Acting Chief Justice of the State High Court. Earlier, Sri K G Raghavan, eminent Advocate and Hon. Geriatrics and Panchakarma was the subject of a lecture delivered by Dr. B.S. Sreedhar, H.O.D., Kayachikitsa and Panchakarma in the Government Ayurveda Medical College, Bangalore. The special lecture under the auspices of the Bhavan on Feb 7, was for an endowment to commemorate the memory of Dr. G. Srinivasa Murthy, a well-known Ayurvedic Physician and social activist. Focusing his attention on leading an old age both mentally and physically, referred to writings of Charaka Acharya and Sushrutha which make it clear that the span of human life is 100 years. This, he said, can be achieved if the individual adheres to the Dr. B.S. Sreedhar AYURVEDA WAY TO RENDER AGEING HALE, HEARTY Ruthu Charya and Dina Charya. Explaining the two norms, Dr. Sreedhar said Ruthu Charya entails consuming food in accordance with the Ruthus, like orange and ballad seeds, in Sishira, mango and watermelan in Vasantha, etc. Dina Charya, according to him involved daily exercises limited food, avoiding items that may cause physiological and mental disturbance coupled with adequate rest. Besides Dr. Sreedhar added that Karma of previous birth also played a vital role in the health of an individual. Dwelling on the word Geriatrics, he explained the word is derived from Geron which means old age and atrology (disease). About Pancha Karma, Dr. Sreedhar said the system comprises five types of treatment ie Virochan, (Purgation) Vamana (vomiting), 6
Pranayama (breathing exercise), Langana (Fasting) and Rasayana. Stressing the importance of regimens in food and exercise for old the aged, he said they should have adequate rest and sleep, avoid sprouted pulses which are not easily digestible, as also curds with hot rice. Nor should milk added to curd rice. He warned that unboiled milk might cause Psoriasis. He said Chyavanaprasha does not help an old man becoming young. It only improves healthy appearance and prevents mental ageing. He advised the use of turmeric powder in the prevention of cold and cough. DON STRESSES ON ENOUGH REST, DIET WHILE AGEING More importantly it can be helpful in kidney ailment, he added. Earlier, Sri. Pemmaiah, Manager, Programmes & Projects welcomed the chief guest. After lying low for quite some time. Bhavan s Kodagu Vidyalaya all of a sudden has hit headlines. And that with a big bang. According to Sri. T.G. Prem Kumar, Member of the Executive Committee of the Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishat (KRVP), the Pico-Hydo model project, designed by the student team of the Vidyalaya with N. Ujwal Narayan in the lead has won appreciation at the national level. The project is about how electricity could be generated at low cost by using river resources. The team was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the Vice-Chancellor of the Benares Hindu University. The Vidyalaya team was one of the 30 from the state which BHAVAN S KODAGU VIDYALAYA SCORES AT NATIONAL LEVEL attended the five-day national level science convention sponsored by the Benares Hindu University. Sri Prem Kumar said the convention had enlightened the growing minds giving an overall view of the development of science in recent times. The Vidyalaya team besides Ujwal Narayan, included Nihar Anil, Vignesh Vasanth, Taha and Nischel Bheemaiah.
