2 On being thankful for God s blessings Oh my! Where has the year gone? The leaves have turned and are falling. The air is crisp and the evenings bring frost to the ground. Our thoughts and attention have turned from beaches and picnics to bonfires, cider, pumpkin pie, and turkey! Over the course of the next few weeks, we ll be passing out candy, lighting candles to remember our loved ones, honoring veterans with parades, and gathering with friends and family for a noble feast. We are truly entering a special time of the year. These events provide us the opportunity to reflect, to ponder, and to give thanks for the blessings we ve encountered. This is easy to do when we remember blessings that brought immediate joy with them. It is much harder to give thanks for blessings that come packaged as trial and tribulation. I remember having a coworker long ago who in the midst of having a difficult day would remark, I am especially blessed today. It became a source of humor for us. Little did I know or understand then that she was teaching me a profound spiritual truth: God brings blessing out of trial and tribulation. Consider the following words that used to be in our hymnal: I asked for strength; God gave me difficulties to make me strong. I asked for wisdom; God gave me problems to solve. I asked for prosperity; God gave me the capacity to work. I asked for courage; God gave me dangers to overcome. I asked for patience; God placed in situations where I was forced to wait. I asked for love; God gave me troubled people to help. I asked for favors; God gave me opportunities. I received nothing I wanted. I received everything I needed. My prayers have all been answered. As we enter this season of reflection and thanksgiving, let us remember that God is ever with us and always at work to bring forth His goodness into our lives. Pastor Marty
