PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT

OTHER SCRIPTURAL PURPOSES FOR SPEAKING IN TONGUES INTRODUCTION We have emphasized four main purposes for speaking in tongues over the last few sessions. We have seen how speaking in tongues aid us to: communicate with God, pray and intercede through the Holy Spirit, edify oneself and understand deeper revelations from God's word. In addition, there are other wonderful benefits that await the believer as we yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to release spiritual utterances through us so that our spirit man might receive all that God has for us. I. TONGUES RELEASES SPIRITUAL REFRESHING A. The prophet Isaiah: God said He would speak to His people through "stammering lips and another tongue." The result of God speaking to us through "another tongue" or "tongues" would be the Holy Spirit causing our weary soul to be refreshed and rested. The rest God is promising is an eternal rest from striving against sin and seeking after righteousness. Our spirit man experiences this rest at the point of one's salvation when forgiveness of sin is assured and Jesus' righteousness is imputed to us. For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, to whom He said, This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest, and, This is the refreshing ; yet they would not hear. Isaiah 28:11-12 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29 B. The refreshing of the soul that the Holy Spirit offers comes in moments when our emotions are disturbed by the pressures of life and demonic opposition to the life of righteousness. King David felt the continual pressure of discouragement assaulting his mind and emotions. He learned to quiet his soul to overcome the enemy of his mind by receiving the rest of the Lord in God's presence. Speaking in tongues releases God's strength and rest to the mind and soul as our thoughts and emotions turn toward the Lord and away from what assaults us. Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God. 1 Samuel 30:6

My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, Where is your God?...Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. Psalm 42:3, 5 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 1:20 C. The natural inclination of the human soul is to spontaneously react to life's circumstances. The book of Proverbs wisely counsels us to rule our spirit by not allowing hasty words and decisions to come forth that could hurt us at a later time. The apostle James counsels us to be slow to speak, slow to anger but quick to hear what God's word and counsel has to say to us. Waiting in God's presence can be done by speaking in tongues, releasing any fears and anxieties one may dealing with. It's in God's presence that we get revelation of His will and His counsel for us. Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls. Proverbs 25:28 He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:29-31 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. James 1:19 II. SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS THE DOORWAY TO THE SUPERNATURAL A. As you recall from the book of Acts, in Chapters 2, 8, 9, 10, & 19, we saw the five different instances that records people receiving the Holy Spirit after their salvation. Along with the receiving of the Holy Spirit we saw several different kinds of manifestations associated with speaking in tongues. There were angelic encounters, the audible voice of God, numerous healings, deliverance from demonic spirits, words of knowledge, prophetic words, speaking in other unlearned earthly languages, etc. These manifestations cannot be done apart from the person of the Holy Spirit.

B. The Corinthian church was operating quite liberally in the gift of tongues. The apostle Paul instructs them to desire the other spiritual gifts as well so that both the believer and the unbeliever could be edified and blessed. We see therefore that the Corinthian's were quite comfortable with the gift of tongues and were challenged by Paul to pursue the other gifts of the Holy Spirit to operate in their midst as well. Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 1 Corinthians 14:1 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 1 Corinthians 14:12-13 C. "Speaking with other tongues is a doorway into the supernatural realm of God. In other words, the infilling with the Holy Ghost and the practice of praying in other tongues on a regular basis is the doorway to all the other benefits and spiritual equipment that are ours. Personally, over the years I've found in my own life and ministry that the more I pray and worship God in tongues, the more manifestation of the other spiritual gifts I experienced in my life. And I've found that the opposite is true as well: The less I speak in tongues, the fewer manifestations of spiritual gifts I experience." - Kenneth Hagin III. SPEAKING IN TONGUES HELPS US TO RECOGNIZE THE VOICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT If we want to effectively recognize God's voice we must be willing to obey what God has already revealed in Scripture. This includes things like submitting to our authorities, tithing, forgiving those who've offended us, etc. These are clear instructions from God's word that doesn't need figuring out. It doesn't really work to ignore God's revealed will and yet expect God to answer specific questions that we need clarity on. A. "How can I know I'm hearing from God?" This is probably one of the most frequent questions I hear from many believers both young and older Christians. The Apostle Paul reveals that speaking in tongues is actually speaking mysteries and speaking unto God. It is important to understand how God actually can use speaking in tongues as a way of revealing His will to us. As we speak in tongues, we're actually releasing, giving words to the will of God yet unknown to us at the moment. The believer can have confidence in the fact that Jesus promised that His mysteries are meant be made known by His followers.

He answered and said to them, Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. Matthew 13:11 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 1 Corinthians 14:2 B. Understanding the role and the work of the Holy Spirit in one's life is absolutely vital and critical to having confidence in knowing God's will for our lives. The Holy Spirit is a person and as a person He desires to speak to us clearly. The Bible promises the following; 1. The Holy Spirit will GUIDE you. The Greek word for "guide" actually means "to show the way." The Holy Spirit acts like a conductor showing us the way that we are to walk in. He takes the responsibility of making sure that He actually shows us the way that we are to be walking in. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13 2. The Holy Spirit will LEAD you. The Greek word for being "led" by the Spirit of God actually means "to bring forth, to carry, to lead away." God's Spirit will make sure that we are in the place He needs us to be as we remain open to His direction. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:14 3. The Holy Spirit will TEACH you. The apostle John reveals how the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer will teach the believer how to be free from deception. The Holy Spirit promises to keep us in the path of truth and free from going astray. The word "teach" in the Greek actually means "to learn." But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1 John 2:27

4. The Holy Spirit REVEALS His plans to you. The Greek word for "reveal" actually means "to take off the cover, to disclose." In other words, the Holy Spirit is the one who makes known to us the things that are hidden from our eyes. He actually removes the blinders in order for us to clearly see what God has for us. But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 C. In conclusion, our Heavenly Father has given us everything we need to know God's will for our lives. The two primary agents that He uses to direct our lives is the person of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. The Spirit of God will never violate what He has already revealed in the word of God. He Himself is the actual inspirer of all scriptural revelation and prophetic truth. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. John 16:14 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17... knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:20-21 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. Galatians 1:12... until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. Acts 1:2-3
