MRS. J. B. NEWTON It has been some time since the passing of Mrs. J. B. Newton and yet our memory of her is as fresh with us as at the time of her going to Heaven. Mrs. Newton was the daughter of Mary Ann and John Watson, born near Roxobel, Bertie County, North Carolina, August 24, 1859. She united with Sandy Run Baptist Church at the age of fifteen. She was married to Rev. J. B. Newton, of Tomahawk, October 25, 1885. Brother C. W. Scarborough performed the ceremony. Mrs. Newton's husband died thirteen years ago last December. She passed away on May 12, 1930. Her oldest son, Graham, died in the year of 1914. The children living are the following: Mrs. R. L. Pittman, of White Oak; Mrs. Falc Bunn, of Zebulon; Miss Linda Newton, of White Oak, l1rs. Reba Floyd, of Lumberton; Miss Foy Newton, of Raleigh; and Mr. Yates Newton, of Raleigh. At the time of Mrs. Newton's death she was living at White Oak, Bladen County. It was very fitting that her remains be brought back to Salemburg and that her funeral be conducted in the church that loved her so well and by her pastor who had known her for many years and who loved her and believed in her because of her constancy in all the things that are good and her beauty in the grace of our Lord Jesus. In the passing of Mrs. Newton, the church and community realize that they have sustained a great loss for she was mighty in the field of usefulness in a quiet, constant and unselfish service. She was the type of attractive, and wholesome Southern women who have given to the country the ideals of modesty, purity, goodness and church loving. To all of us she was an inspiration. ~!. J. JONES BIBLICAL RECORDER, December 10, 1930, p. 14.
