----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- Order of Worship November 4, 2018 Reflection Pseudo-faith always arranges a way out to serve in case God fails it. Real faith knows only one way and gladly allows itself to be stripped of any second way or makeshift substitutes. For true faith, it is either God or total collapse. And not since Adam first stood up on the earth has God failed a single man or woman who trusted him. -A.W. Tozer Prelude As worship begins, please silence your electronic devices. Call To Worship Psalm 89 Leader: I will sing of your steadfast love, O LORD, forever. People: With my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. Leader: I declare that your steadfast love is established forever. 1

People: Your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens! Song Arise, My Soul, Arise Arise, my soul, arise, shake off your guilty fears; The bleeding sacrifice, in my behalf appears; Before the throne my Surety stands, Before the throne my Surety stands, My name is written on His hands. Chorus: Arise (arise), arise (arise), arise Arise, my soul, arise. Arise (arise), arise (arise), arise Arise, my soul, arise. Shake off your guilty fears and rise He ever lives above, for me to intercede; His all redeeming love, His precious blood, to plead; His blood atoned for every race, His blood atoned for every race, And sprinkles now the throne of grace. (Chorus) Five bleeding wounds He bears; received on Calvary; They pour effectual prayers; 2

they strongly plead for me: "Forgive him, O forgive," they cry, "Forgive him, O forgive," they cry, "Don t let that ransomed sinner die!" (Chorus) My God is reconciled; His pardoning voice I hear; He owns me for His child; I can no longer fear With confidence I now draw nigh, With confidence I now draw nigh, And "Father, Abba, Father," cry. (Chorus) Prayer of Adoration You, our Lord, are glorious beyond measure. You are holy and righteous. Were it not for your love, we would perish forever. We praise you, Father, that you have rescued us from the dominion of darkness and have brought us into the kingdom of the Son whom you love, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Thank you for opening for us a door into eternal fellowship with you through the mystery of Christ our Lord. Holy Spirit, we humbly ask you to make Jesus more real to us this day that we might love him more dearly and follow him more nearly throughout the week. Amen. 3

Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Doxology Old Hundredth Praise God from Whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below! Praise Him above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen. Prayer of Confession Almighty and Gracious Father, who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over transgression? Your mercy is greater than our sin, and your compassion stronger than our shame. Forgive us and cleanse our hearts. Free 4

us from our enslaving sin and selfrighteousness. Grant us willing spirits, that love what you love and hate what you hate. Make us a gracious presence in an ungracious world longing for peace and joy. May we be faithful vessels who carry Jesus. We pray in His Name, Amen. Private Confession Song Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing Come Thou Fount of every blessing Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, Mount of God's unchanging love. Here I raise my Ebenezer; Hither by Thy help I'm come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed His precious blood. 5

O to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrained to be! Let that grace now like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above. Words of Pardon and Comfort Psalm 130:7-8 Hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. He will redeem his people from all their iniquities. Song Jesus, Thank You The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend The agonies of Calvary You, the perfect Holy One, crushed Your Son Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me Chorus: Your blood has washed away my sin Jesus, thank You The Father's wrath completely satisfied Jesus, thank You Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table Jesus, thank You 6

By Your perfect sacrifice I've been brought near Your enemy You've made Your friend Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace Your mercy and Your kindness know no end (Chorus) Lover of my soul, I want to live for You Lover of my soul, I want to live for You (Chorus) (Children through Kindergarten are dismissed for Children s Church; they will return for Communion.) Prayer of Intercession (Concluded by the Lord s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. High Desert Highlights See Announcements on page 17 Offertory Scripture Joshua 9:1-27 7

9:1 As soon as all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard of this, 2 they gathered together as one to fight against Joshua and Israel. 3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, 4 they on their part acted with cunning and went and made ready provisions and took worn-out sacks for their donkeys, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, 5 with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes. And all their provisions were dry and crumbly. 6 And they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, We have come from a distant country, so now make a covenant with us. 7 But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you? 8 They said to Joshua, We are your servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are you? And where do you come from? 9 They said to him, From a very distant country your servants have come, because of the name of the Lord your God. For we have heard a report of him, and all that he did in Egypt, 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth. 11 So our elders 8

and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, Take provisions in your hand for the journey and go to meet them and say to them, We are your servants. Come now, make a covenant with us. 12 Here is our bread. It was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey on the day we set out to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and crumbly. 13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they have burst. And these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey. 14 So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the Lord. 15 And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. 16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and that they lived among them. 17 And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim. 18 But the people of Israel did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders. 19 But all the leaders said to all the congregation, We have sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them: let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath that we 9

swore to them. 21 And the leaders said to them, Let them live. So they became cutters of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said of them. 22 Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, Why did you deceive us, saying, We are very far from you, when you dwell among us? 23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall never be anything but servants, cutters of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. 24 They answered Joshua, Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you so we feared greatly for our lives because of you and did this thing. 25 And now, behold, we are in your hand. Whatever seems good and right in your sight to do to us, do it. 26 So he did this to them and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel, and they did not kill them. 27 But Joshua made them that day cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, to this day, in the place that he should choose. Sermon: Rev. Dan Rose The Gibeonite Deception Discerning Christ in the Conquest: Messages from Joshua 10

Song: Fortress A mighty fortress is our God, A Bulwark never failing; Our Helper He amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing; For still our ancient Foe Doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow'r are great, And armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. A Mighty Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God's own choosing; Dost ask who that may be: Christ Jesus it is He; Lord Sabbaoth His name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle. And though this world with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us We will not fear for God hath willed, His truth to triumph through us The Prince of Darkness grim, 11

We tremble not for him His rage we can endure, For lo his doom is sure One little word shall fell him That Word above all earthly pow'r, No thanks to them abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through Him who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever! Celebration of the Lord s Supper This is a time for all people to seek the Lord. For Christians, the Lord s Supper (also called Communion or The Eucharist, which means thanksgiving ) is a time to meet with their Savior by faith, to be strengthened and renewed by Him as they eat the bread and drink the elements. All baptized Christians who trust in Christ alone as their Savior and Lord, belong to a church that embraces the gospel, are at peace with their fellow neighbor, and seek strength and grace to live more faithfully to Christ, are invited to participate. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer (see Prayers on page 16) 12

and to consider more deeply your relationship to Jesus Christ. We also ask that children who have not yet publicly professed their faith in Christ refrain from partaking until doing so. Both wine (red) and grape juice (white) are offered in each serving tray. Words of Institution Memorial Acclamation Minister: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of the faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again! Minister: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. All: Therefore let us keep the feast. Minister: The gifts of God for the people of God. Communion Song Jesus, Messiah He became sin, who knew no sin That we might become His righteousness He humbled Himself and carried the cross Love so amazing, love so amazing Chorus: Jesus, Messiah, Name above all names Blessed Redeemer, Emmanuel The Rescue for sinners The Ransom from heaven 13

In giving all, you have not withheld from us your own dear Son. How can we withhold anything from you, our Lord and our God? Renew us day by day with the gift of your Spirit, that we may give ourselves completely to your service and walk with joy in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 14

true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief: Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope.
