November 4, 2018 Saints

Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. We acknowledge our presence is on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Listening devices are available for the hearing impaired during the service; please contact one of our greeters. Prelude Variations sur Veni Creator D Bedard Words of welcome Please rise as you are able to sing our opening Hymn No 281, in Common Praise. 1 Who are these like stars appearing, these before God's throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; who are all this glorious band? "eluia!" hark, they sing, praising loud their heavenly King. 2 Who are these of dazzling brightness, these in God's own righteousness? These whose robes of purest whiteness shall their lustre still possess, still untouched by time's rude hand -- whence comes all this glorious band? 3 These are they who have contended for their Saviour's honour long, wrestling on till life was ended, following not the sinful throng; these, who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained. 4 These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have striven with the God they glorified; now, their painful conflict o'er, God has bid them weep no more. 2

5 These, the Almighty contemplating, did as priest before him stand, soul and body always waiting day and night at his command: now, in God's most holy place, blest they stand before his face. +The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please rise as you are able to sing Hymn No 366 in Common Praise 1 Glory, in the highest glory, peace to all in all their days. Worship, thanks and praise unceasing to the Source of all we raise: reigning in the sapphire height, hidden from our mortal sight, now receive our adoration, as we make our supplication. 2 Jesus Christ, the world s Redeemer, Lamb of God, for sinners given, Word eternal, born of Mary, Word made flesh, the face of heaven: holy one, to you we pray, 3

Children s focus hear us in the realms of day, with the Spirit there united, and the God-head high exalted. Let us pray. Almighty God, whose people are knit together in one holy Church, the mystical Body of your Son, grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please remain seated for a reading from the Book of Revelation (Ch 21.1-6a) Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the 4

Reader end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please remain seated to chant Psalm 24 Cantor sings Refrain sing Refrain Choir only 1 The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell there- in. 2 For it is God who founded it up- on the seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. sing Refrain Choir only 3 Who can ascend the hill of the Lord * and who can stand in the holy place of God? 4 Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. 5 They shall receive a blessing from the Lord * and a just reward from the God of their sal- vation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek you, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. sing Refrain Please remain seated for a reading from the Letter of Paul to the Colossians (Chapter 1.9-14) For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good 5

Reader work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual Hymn No 508 in Common Praise 1 I heard the voice of Jesus say Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast. I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, And he has made me glad. 2 I heard the voice of Jesus say, Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink, and live. I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. We remain standing and turn to face the Deacon 6

Deacon Deacon Deacon Deacon eluia, alleluia, alleluia. eluia, alleluia, alleluia. Speak Lord, for your servant is listening. You have the words of eternal life. eluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John. (Chapter 11.32-44) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, See how he loved him! But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go. 7

Deacon Sermon Silence for reflection Please rise as you are able The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, I am this dark world's light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright. I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I'll walk till travelling days are done. The Venerable John Stephens Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8

Please remain standing or kneel for our prayers At the conclusion of the Prayers of the People Intercessor Confession and Absolution Silence is kept Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, and St John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints we commend ourselves and all people to your unfailing love. Merciful God: Accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites us to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 9

Please rise as you are able for the Peace Please exchange a sign of peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. During the singing of Hymn No 300 in Common Praise, a collection will be taken. 1 Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone, chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one; holy Zion's help for ever, and her confidence alone. 2 that dedicated city, dearly loved of God on high, in exultant jubilation pours perpetual melody; God the One-in-Three adoring in glad hymns eternally. 3 To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of hosts, today; with thy wonted loving-kindness hear thy servants as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. 4 Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain, what they gain from thee forever with the blessed to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign. 5 Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever three, and ever one, 10

Prayer over the gifts one in might and one in glory, while unending ages run. Holy and mighty God, we give you thanks for the triumph of Christ in the lives of all his saints. Receive all we offer you this day, and help us, like them, to run our course with faith, that we may come to your eternal kingdom. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Holy God, Lover of creation, we give you thanks and praise for in the ocean of your steadfast love you bear us and place the song of your Spirit in our hearts. When we turn from your love and defile the earth, you do not abandon us. Your Spirit speaks through Huldah and Micah, through prophets, sages, and saints in every age, to confront our sin and reveal the vision of your new creation. Joining in the song of the universe we proclaim your glory singing: 11

Gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent Jesus the Christ to share our fragile humanity. Through Jesus life, death, and resurrection you open the path from brokenness to health, from fear to trust, from pride and conceit to reverence for you. Rejected by a world that could not bear the Gospel of life, Jesus knew death was near. His head anointed for burial by an unknown woman, Jesus gathered together those who loved him. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it and gave it to his friends, saying, Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave you thanks, and said Drink this all of you, 12

this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. And now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the bread and cup of Christ s undying love, and to proclaim our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Breathe your Holy Spirit, the wisdom of the universe, upon these gifts that we bring to you: this bread, this cup, ourselves, our souls and bodies, that we may be signs of your love for all the world and ministers of your transforming purpose. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, Creator of all, and we bless your holy name for ever. Amen. As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, 13

and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. I am the bread which has come down from heaven, says the Lord. Give us this bread for ever. I am the vine, you are the branches. May we dwell in him, as he lives in us. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. We invite all baptized Christians to receive Communion at our altar. If you wish to receive a blessing please come at the same time. Intinction is not permitted as it contaminates the wine. It is acceptable to receive either bread or wine only. If you are unable to make your way to the altar please ask a sidesperson to have Communion brought to you. Gluten free wafers are available. Anthem Please rise as you are able Lord of hosts, we praise your glory reflected in your saints. May we who share at this table be filled with the joy of your eternal kingdom, where Jesus is Lord, now and for ever. Amen. 14

We sit for the notices Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. We sing our final Hymn No 276 in Common Praise 1 For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. eluia! eluia! 2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, the one true light. eluia! eluia! 4 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. eluia! eluia! 7 But lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day -- the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. eluia! eluia! 15

8 From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. eluia! eluia! Dismissal Deacon Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. Postlude The Holy City Maybrick/Adams The organ postlude is to uplift us as we go out into the world.
