A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION For Defence Sunday November 11 th 2018 1

Prepared at Diocesan Office 8 Gladstone Street, Gladstone By The Venerable Gael Johannsen August 2018 Prayers and Liturgy used in this service (If not otherwise acknowledged) From A Prayer Book For Australia (Broughton Publishing, Australia) Or New Patterns for Worship (Authorised Material, Church of England) 2

Defence Sunday Defence Sunday is an opportunity for the whole church to pray for the ministry that occurs within and to the Australian Defence Force. Our Bishop, Ian Lambert has written to the other Australian Bishops reminding them that we place a high priority in making connections, particularly in encouraging a shared ministry of parishes with chaplains. Defence Sunday is observed annually on the Sunday prior to Remembrance Day (11 November). We use the day to: Draw attention to the spiritual needs and wellbeing of those who serve in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as sailors, soldiers or airmen and airwomen. Foster prayer support within Churches for those who serve the nation through ADF service. Encourage clergy to consider service as full or part-time Australian Defence Force Chaplains. Build bridges of cooperative partnership between the Anglican ministry to the Australian Defence Force and diocese and parish churches across Australia. Defence Sunday is important. Whilst Remembrance Day recalls the tragedy of World War 1 and the hope for peace which came with the Armistice on 11 November 1918, the experiences of the 20ths and now the 21st Century reveal that this hope remains unfulfilled. Tragically, Australian service personnel continue to die in combat in the Middle East and the numbers of physical, psychological and spiritual causalities continue to increase. Our church has a responsibility to provide ongoing pastoral and spiritual care to serving military personnel. The greatest support that the church can provide to its chaplains engaged in this mission is prayer and understanding. Www.defenceanglicans.com.au 3

The Gathering of God s People The president greets the people Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Sentence of Scripture Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Introduction We meet in the presence of God. We commit ourselves to work in penitence and faith for reconciliation between the nations, that all people may, together, live in freedom, justice and peace. We pray for all who in bereavement, disability and pain continue to suffer the consequences of fighting and terror. We remember today the Great War, the 100th Anniversary of its armistice occurring today. We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives, in world wars and conflicts past and present, have been given and taken away. We pray also for those who serve at present in our Defence Forces, and their Chaplains. Prayers of Penitence Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world; its pride, its selfishness, its greed; its evil divisions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for his children. 4

After a short silence, all say Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 5

The Prayer of the Day God of love and liberty, We bring our thanks today for the peace and security we enjoy, We remember those who in time of war faithfully served their country. We pray for their families, and for ourselves whose freedom was won at such a cost. Make us a people zealous for peace, and hasten that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation neither learn war any more. This we pray in the name of the one who gave his life for the sake of the world: Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Amen. Prayer for Defence Force Chaplains Lord God of Hosts, We prayer for your clergy whom you have called to the ministry of uniformed chaplaincy, and for those who proclaim your love and compassion in battle areas and defence establishments where Australian military personnel serve. Lord, strengthen their faith as they seek to witness to you in a secular world. Protect them from all dangers and comfort them in the long separations from families and the familiar things of church that they must endure. Lord who blessed the peacemakers, bless especially those chaplains serving overseas, helping to bring peace to the nations new and old which are struggling to find their identity and place in the world. We ask in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen 6

The Liturgy of the Word A reading from the Prophet Micah Chapter 4 beginning at Verse 1 1 In days to come the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised up above the hills. Peoples shall stream to it, and many nations shall come and say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between many peoples, and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more; but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God Psalm 46 God is our refuge and strength: A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved: and though the mountains are shaken in the midst of the sea; Though the waters rage and foam: and though the mountains quake at the rising of the sea. 7

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God: the holy dwelling place of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, therefore she shall not moved: God will help her, and at break of day. The nations make uproar, and the kingdoms are shaken: but God has lifted his voice, and the earth shall tremble. The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come then and see what the Lord has done: what destruction he has brought upon the earth. He makes wars to cease in all the world: he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, and burns the chariots in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted upon the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold. A reading from the letter to the Hebrews, Chapter 10 beginning at Verse 32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For, In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay. And, But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back. 8

But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn Gospel Reading The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John, Chapter 15 beginning at verse 9 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. This is the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Sermon 9

The Creed (Iona Abbey Worship Book, pg 95, Wildgoose Publishing) We believe in God in whom is power and compassion. We believe in the Creator who gave birth to the universe, set solar systems dancing in space, shaped molecules and mountains and conceived beauty beyond our imagining. God s power topples tyrants, and brings down walls of separation: God s love embodies the tenderness of a mother and father, encouraging and caring for each of us. We believe in Jesus, born in obscurity in an occupied land; a human being, vulnerable to hunger, thirst, persecution and grief. He understood the power of love and confronted the powers of evil, spoke the truth with courage and clarity, forgave his enemies and changed lives. In his living, dying and rising again he showed love strong enough to save the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit who sustains, comforts and empowers us, opens the Scriptures, opens our minds, and illuminates the world s darkness. Amen. Prayers of Intercession Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace: for the service men and women who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God; may God give peace. God give peace. 10

For those who love them in death as in life, offering the distress of our grief and the sadness of our loss; may God give peace. God give peace. For all members of the armed forces and their chaplains, those who are in danger this day, remembering family, friends and all who pray for their safe return; may God give peace. God give peace. For civilian women, children and men whose lives are disfigured by war or terror, calling to mind in penitence the anger and hatreds of humanity; may God give peace. God give peace. For peacemakers and peacekeepers, who seek to keep this world secure and free; may God give peace. God give peace. For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, political, military and religious; asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve in the search for reconciliation and peace; may God give peace. God give peace. O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen. 11

The Ode and the Last Post would be appropriate at this point. Flowers and other tokens may be laid at the foot of the cross or in the sanctuary. The Liturgy of the Sacrament The Peace Jesus said, Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Preparation of the Table A hymn may be sung. The gifts of the people may be gathered and presented. The table is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. This or another prayer at the preparation of the table may be said To you we come, Father of lights, with angels and saints, where heaven and earth unite. May Jesus meet us in the breaking of the bread. Amen. The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you And also with you Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give our thanks and praise It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should always sing of your glory, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. For you are the hope of the nations, the builder of the city that is to come. 12

Your love made visible in Jesus Christ brings home the lost, restores the sinner and gives dignity to the despised. In his face your light shines out, flooding lives with goodness and truth, gathering into one in your kingdom, a divided and broken humanity. Therefore with all who can give voice in your creation we glorify your name, for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest! Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ's body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 13

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 14

Breaking of the Bread As the grain once scattered in the fields and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside are now reunited on this table in bread and wine, so, Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together from the corners of the earth into your kingdom. Amen. Giving of Communion The president says this or another invitation to communion I heard the voice of a great multitude crying, Alleluia. The Lord our God has entered into his kingdom. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. The Sending out of God s People Prayer after Communion Eternal God, comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken, you have fed us at the table of life and hope; teach us your ways of gentleness and peace, that all the world may acknowledge the kingdom of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Act of Commitment Let us commit ourselves to responsible living and faithful service. Will you strive for all that makes for peace? We will. Will you seek to heal the wounds of war? We will. Will you work for a just future for all humanity? We will. Merciful God, we offer to you the fears in us that have not yet been cast out by love: may we accept the hope you have placed in the hearts of all people, and live lives of justice, courage and mercy; through Jesus Christ our risen redeemer. Amen. 15

A hymn may be sung. The Blessing The president blesses the people, saying Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all; and the blessing.. Go, to love and to serve, in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. 16
