THE VOICE OF OUR REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH Pastor Steve Jacobsen - Church Office: 942-3168 / Cell:217-204-6576 s: Saturday at 5:30 PM & Sunday at 9 AM Sunday School: 10:15 A.M. www.our-redeemer-lutheran-church.org July/ August 2018 Our attendances for the past two months were: It was so great to celebrate Kaitlyn s confirmation with so many family showing support! Ephesians 2:8-10 Indeed, it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared in advance so that we would walk in them. [EHV] Over the next two months we will spend most of our sermons looking at Ephesians (though we already read the famous verses above on March 11 this year). In our Vacation Bible School (July 30-August 3) we will look at the many gifts God has given us in our Baptism. Then at the closing service on Sunday August 5 th as we look at Ephesians 4:5 that talks about our one Lord, one Faith, One baptism we will see how God intends that we continue to grow in our baptism until we all reach unity in the faith. In Bible Study we will look at the work God s grace inspired in the pens of many of the great hymn writers of our 500 year Lutheran History, for as Ephesians also says our natural response to God s grace includes singing and making music with your hearts to the Lord (5:19). Our July 1 st study will include the tune by Paul Speratus dating all the way back to 1524; Salvation unto Us Has Come based on the text above. That tune notes the two themes of these verses which dominate this letter and all of our life as Christians; (1) Faith clings to Jesus Cross alone And rests in Him unceasing. (And) (2) And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. May all that we do be filled with the power of Jesus forgiveness so that we live in love and hope. -In Christ, Pastor Steve 5/5-5/13 5/19 5/26 6/3 6/9-6/16 6/23-6 -20-27 10-17 24 5:30 11 8 6 9 5 10 9AM 37 57 37 42 44 44 33 34 Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class will begin a four week video study called Singing the Faith on July 1. Come join us and help us decide what to study next. Tuesday Ladies Bible Study will resume their study of Ruth on July 3 rd. Sunday School is in its summer pattern which means different class groups and active learning. Parents are strongly encouraged to bring their children to Sunday School whenever possible. It would be a great encouragement in the faith for your children and for all the other children of our church as well. Vacation Bible School: River of Life will be 9 11:30 AM on July 30-August 3 if we have workers and registered students there are still a lot of volunteer spots that need filled on the sign-up sheet in the church entryway. Please set the time aside on your calendars if possible. We are using the Lutheran Heritage Foundation s VBS material this year, and extra time and work is needed to coordinate what we want to be doing to have our planning done in good time for this year. We also have extra registration forms (one is in this newsletter). Please invite friends and neighbors. Confirmation- Pastor is hoping to meet with our 5-8 th grade parents soon to see what plan will work best for them this year. With VBS coming later this summer we may even want to start meeting before that week. Call Pastor if your child will be involved but you won t be at services soon

Ladies Aid - President Sandra Purcell. In May we enjoyed our Mother s Day celebration. We had 21 ladies join us for Bunco, prizes, and fellowship. The members brought delicious snacks and served punch. We completed 2 more quilts for orphan grain train. We served the free lunches in the community the week of June 4th with the help of other church members. During the week we served over 380 lunches averaging over 70 lunches each day. They kept us busy. At our June 18th meeting Kathy Harms opened our meeting with an interesting devotion about bumble bees based on Mark 9:23 stating If you can? Jesus said to him. All things are possible for the one who believes. We made plans for our summer outing. It will be Thursday, July 18th at Anastasia Tearoom, 351 N Main St at 11:30 AM. There will be a sign up sheet at the back of the church for all those members and guests who would like to join us. We discussed the District Convention being held September 28 and 29. Sandy Purcell and Emily Carroll will be the delegates representing our society. (continues on next column ->) We also discussed the Fall Salad Luncheon to be held September 26th. Patsy Hardwick will meet with the committee on September 4th to finalize plans. We closed the meeting with the Lords Prayer and Sandy Purcell shared an article titled A Circle of Light. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Ps. 27:1). We can always use more pictures and articles for our newsletter. You can E-mail them to RevJacobsen@outlook.com or drop off a paper copy at the church office. The deadline for September/October will be August 21.
