Issue # 35 May 2012 We couldn t have done it without you! Acts 20:35 reminds us that it is more blessed to give than to receive and boy there were a lot of blessed people in the room on Saturday night at Lutheran Youth of Queensland s Brisbane Appeal Dinner! The overwhelming generosity of sponsors, auction item donors and guests made it possible to raise $40,031 to fund training and ministry support for children in Queensland. Even though the target of $42,150 for the evening wasn t quite reached, the funds raised will go a long way to ensuring that the target projects (see page 2) will be supported. Lutheran Youth of Queensland Director, Aaron Glover was overwhelmed by the generosity of the audience, We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters and the passion to support young lives in Queensland. The evening was a great celebration of the amazing way God is working through the Lutheran Church in Queensland to influence our children. Issue #35 May 2012 page 7 Fun, Challenge, Adventure Boys Brigade > get started now! Young people can and do make powerful contributions to the world right now. Providing fun, challenge & adventure for all school-aged males, The Boys' Brigade (BB) trains and empowers young people for effective leading & mission impact in their world today. With an unashamedly Christian foundation, BB has a proven track record for reaching out and providing mentoring programs for boys of all backgrounds, abilities & interests - broadening their horizons and skills with international recognition for their achievements. BB is first and foremost a training ministry for boys into how to think and live like Christ in their world - irregardless of their profession of faith. They become true Christians (Christ-like) when they bear the fruit of Christ (Matt 7:20). Boys today are suffocating in cotton wool - not being allowed to be boys and explore their sense of Adventure. BB runs many events aimed at challenging boys in a safe environment. Issue #35 May 2012 page 8 Professional Standards Workshops Attending a Professional Standards Workshop (formally known as Childsafe Training) is a key requirement for leaders in the Lutheran Church who minister to children and young people. It is also mandatory for volunteers who want to lead on a Lutheran Youth of Queensland event. Regular workshops are facilitated by the LCAQD s Professional Standards Unit (PSU). Below is an explanation of what these workshops involve as well as details about upcoming training opportunities. Explaining the PSU Workshops (taken from the LCAQD s PSU Department website) The Professional Standards Workshops cover two key training areas. The first revolves around the Safe Place Policy of the church introduced in 1997. This deals with the important issue of sexual abuse and harassment within the church. The second Child Safe - grows out of the special needs of children and young people (those below 18) in our care. State legislation also requires congregations to comply with special risk management strategies. What congregations need to do is explained by the Commission for Children, Young People and Child Guardian. The workshop explains what our church has done to make this task easier for congregations. Training runs from 9am - 4pm and costs $30* per person (*includes booklet, course materials, certificate and morning tea). Tuesday 5 June - St Johns, 24 Levington Rd, Eight Mile Plains 16 June - Church Hall, 23 Toowoomba Rd, Crows Nest 16 June - LCAQD Offices, Level 2, 24 McDougall St, Milton 21 July - Good Shepherd, 23 Glenvale Rd, Toowoomba 11 August - Caloundra (venue TBA) Places are limited, and registration before the date is essential.
