Opening Song How Great Is Our God! (please stand) The splendor of the King, clothed in majesty Let all the earth rejoice All the earth rejoice He wraps himself in light, and darkness tries to hide And trembles at his voice Trembles at his voice How great is our God, sing with me How great is our God, and all will see How great, how great is our God Age to age he stands And time is in his hands Beginning and the end Beginning and the end The Godhead Three in One Father Spirit Son The Lion and the Lamb The Lion and the Lamb How great is our God, sing with me How great is our God, and all will see How great, how great is our God Name above all names Worthy of our praise My heart will sing How great is our God How great, how great is our God 3

We Confess Our Sins and Hear God s Promise of Forgiveness 1 P: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. 1 Not that a pastor has the ability to forgive sins on his own, but Jesus tells his disciples: If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven (Jn. 20:23) In other words, as Christians we pass on to each other the message of the Gospel with full confidence that it is truth: We have forgiveness of sins because of Jesus. 4

Song of Praise How Great Is Our God! (Refrain) How great is our God, sing with me How great is our God, and all will see How great, how great is our God How great, how great is our God Prayer of the Day P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray: Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and to the day of your righteous judgment. Keep us steadfast in true and living faith and present us at last holy and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (be seated) 5

First Lesson Isaiah 33:17-24 17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar. 18 In your thoughts you will ponder the former terror: Where is that chief officer? Where is the one who took the revenue? Where is the officer in charge of the towers? 19 You will see those arrogant people no more, those people of an obscure speech, with their strange, incomprehensible tongue. 20 Look upon Zion, the city of our festivals; your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful abode, a tent that will not be moved; its stakes will never be pulled up, nor any of its ropes broken. 21 There the L will be our Mighty One. It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams. No galley with oars will ride them, no mighty ship will sail them. 22 For the L is our judge, the L is our lawgiver, the L is our king; it is he who will save us. 23 Your rigging hangs loose: The mast is not held secure, the sail is not spread. Then an abundance of spoils will be divided and even the lame will carry off plunder. 24 No one living in Zion will say, I am ill ; and the sins of those who dwell there will be forgiven. 6

Psalm of the Day Psalm 90 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. You turn mortals back to dust. You sweep them away in the sleep of death. The length of our days is seventy years or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 7

Second Lesson Hebrews 10:26-31, 39 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, It is mine to avenge; I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge his people. 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved. 8

After the children's lesson, a staffed nursery is available. Meet the nursery workers in back, and they will take the kids to the playroom. You can pick them up at any time. 9

Song of the Day Lord, You I Love with All My Heart (CW #434) Lord, you I love with all my heart; I pray you ne er from me depart; With tender mercies cheer me. Earth has no pleasure I would share; Heaven itself were void and bare If you, Lord, were not near me. And should my heart for sorrow break, My trust in you no one could shake. You are the treasure I have sought; Your precious blood my soul has bought. Lord Jesus Christ, My God and Lord, my God and Lord, Forsake me not! I trust your Word. Lord God, twas your rich bounty gave My body, soul, and all I have In this poor life of labor. Lord, grant that I in ev ry place May glorify your lavish grace And serve and help my neighbor. Let no false doctrine me beguile; Let Satan not my soul defile. Give strength and patience unto me To bear my crosses willingly. Lord Jesus Christ, My God and Lord, my God and Lord, Forsake me not! I trust your Word. 10

Lord, let at last your angels come; To Abram s bosom bear me home That I may die unfearing. And in its narrow chamber keep My body safe in peaceful sleep Until your reappearing. And then from death awaken me That my own eyes with joy may see, O Son of God, your glorious face, My Savior and my Fount of grace. Lord Jesus Christ, My prayer attend, my prayer attend, And I will praise you without end. The Message The Kingdom of God is Like...A Net Matthew 13:47-50 47 Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Notes 11

(please stand) Prayer of the Church Spoken by the Pastor The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Institution 3 P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and give it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to all of his disciples, saying, Drink from it all of you. This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you, for the forgiveness of all of your sins. Do this, whenever you drink of it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 3 We practice Close communion. If you are a guest, please speak with pastor before communing. 14
