Volume 19, Number 30 July 28th, 2013 Are You Kidding God? by Dave Rogers One of the first laws ordained by God is the law of procreation. In Genesis 1:11, He pronounced, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth; and it was so. Even before He created man, God directed that all plants and animals (as well as man!) would produce offspring like the parents: Apple trees produce apples, not oranges; cats have kittens, not puppies; and so on. When a farmer plants wheat, he expects to harvest wheat, not weeds! Many times in the bible, the Holy Spirit employs this fact of life to emphasize that our actions, words, and thoughts all bring about predictable results. When the wise man wrote in Proverbs 22:8 that He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow, he was writing from firsthand experience as well as inspiration! God told Hosea to marry a faithless woman so He could show His own people just how unfaithful they had become toward Him. Despite His encouragement and pleading for Israel to leave their evil ways and return to faithfulness, God s people chose to suffer under wicked men like Ahab in Judah and Jeroboam in Israel. Hosea wrote of them that They sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7 a ). Their wickedness and stubborn persistence in evil came home to roost in their days of oppression, persecution, and captivity. God s law of procreation is still in full force today. Plants and animals still produce according to their own species, and evil desires and thoughts still beget wicked actions (see James 1:14-16). The apostle Paul counsels us to not be deceived in this respect, Galatians 6:7. If we indulge in materialism, worldly thinking, immodest dress, sour and unsanctified speech; if we habitually foul our mouths with toxic talk, allow our eyes to be filled with adultery and fornication, overlook and excuse petty theft because it s so common; if we reserve righteous words for use only on Sundays, but seek to blend in on Mondays, then our hypocrisy shall surely come back upon us in eternity! Let us be more aware of our thoughts, that we may effectively police them and keep them holy; as [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). Jesus said that it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles us, Matthew 15:11. If it is reasonable for us to live holy, acceptable lives in the sight of God (and it is, Romans 12:1), then we need to work at letting God s will influence every aspect of our lives, whether great or small. If we live two-faced lives, we fool no one but ourselves; certainly not our Father! Who are you trying to kid: GOD? I Wonder Why? by Dave Rogers I read somewhere that if we attended public school classes on the same once-or-twice-aweek schedule as our bible classes, it would take us 12 years just to finish the first grade! When we skip bible classes altogether, we ve basically chosen to be spiritual kindergartners. Some will argue preacher, I can study my bible at home! but the question to answer is DO you? How does it make sense to skip these spiritual meals when some of us are in danger of starving to death spiritually?
