State of Tennessee Department of State Tennessee State Library and Archives Tennessee Historical Society Broadside Collection, 1821-1957 Creator: Tennessee Historical Society Inclusive Dates: 1821-1957, bulk 1821-1904 COLLECTION SUMMARY Scope & Content: The collection is composed of 24 historical broadsides collected by the Tennessee Historical Society (THS). The bulk of the collection dates between 1821 and 1904 with one broadside from 1957. While the majority comes from Tennessee, there are also broadsides from Alabama and Georgia. Notable items include: a Circular to the People of Tennessee by Gov. William Carroll (located in folder 1); proceedings of the Democratic party meeting held in Jonesborough (located in folder 2); the mirror of nature or phrenological developments character and trends of John A. Murril (located in folder 5); a broadside regarding J. F. Morgan and railroad bonds (located in folder 7); The Ten Commandments of the Prohibitionists (located in folder 21); and a Civil War-related broadside from Murfreesboro (located in folder 18). The Civil War broadside is General Orders No. 155 from Headquarters Department No. 2. It is dated December 12, 1862, and was an order from General Braxton Bragg, issued by Assistant Adjutant General George G. Garner, congratulating the army on its role in the Confederate victory at the Battle of Hartsville. Another item of note is a 1957 advertisement for a segregation meeting in Centennial Park (located in folder 23). The broadside relates to integration of schools and proclaims Keep Our White Schools White! The event took place on August 4, 1957, in Nashville. Speakers included: Bill Hendrix, Ace Carter, Dr. Ed Fields, Lee Foster, Peter Xavier, James Bagwell, Rev. John Mercurio, Hugh Morris, and John Kasper. Kasper was a known agitator from the North and selfproclaimed president of the Tennessee White Citizens Council. He was also a
central figure in the opposition to the integration of Clinton High School (Clinton, Tenn.) in 1956.
