Volume 38, Issue 15 September 25, 2013 the illumination news from Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Dear St. David s Parishioner: In the passage above, Paul is encouraging the Christians in Corinth to give to other newly formed churches in order to expand the Kingdom of God. This is a universal message that reaches out to us even today. St. David s is blessed to be the benefactor of your stewardship, and for that we are grateful. It s that time again when we re asking you to make a commitment for the coming year, so we can be good stewards in expanding God s Kingdom through St. David s. We all have received generous and gracious blessings from God s abundance; and in response we have the opportunity to give back joyfully and freely. We are making a year round emphasis on Stewardship, presenting multiple opportunities for you to become more involved in the life of the parish by committing your time and talent as well as your treasure. Over 700 of our members have responded to God s call to serve him through ministry here at St. David s. Enclosed is your 2014 Pledge Card. Please take time now to decide what commitments you will make for the coming year. As with all things related to God, this starts with prayer, to discern God s will and seek his blessing. As God declared to the prophet Malachai, put me to the test, says the lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing says the Lord of hosts. Then all the Inside this Issue nations will count you happy, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts. Malachi 3 9-12. You may pledge online or download the pledge card from our church website, at www.stdavidchurch.org, by clicking Pledge Card in the Around St. David s box next to Ken s video. Also you will see a list of ministries that you may join, and you can download the "Volunteer Form" to send to the church office. Please return the Pledge card by October 27, 2013, to give us ample time to make next year s budget. In order to fulfill what we believe God intends for us to do, we need commitments totaling $1.5 million. And remember: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also Matthew 6:21 Faithfully, Ken Swanson Rector, St. David s Church Thomas Nolfa Stewardship Chair Pg. 3 Parish Life column Pg. 3 59 & Holding October Lunch Pg. 3 Nursery help needed Pg. 4 Vestry Nominations Pg. 4 Blessing of the Animals Pg. 5 Help Camp Mikell & Remember Hendree Pg. 6 Adult Education Pg. 7 Special Suicide Prevention program Blood Drive on Sunday, October 13 all morning in the main parking lot Donors must be at least 17 yrs. of age, weigh at least 103 pounds, and show a valid photo I.D. VESTRY NOMINATIONS Nominations will open on Sunday, Sept. 29 and will end on Sunday, October 6 Vestry Nomination Forms will be available at a designated table in the main church hallway before and after Sunday services and also in the church office during the week of Sept. 29. The election of the four new vestry members will take place on two Sundays - November 10 and November 17. This should allow all members of St. David s the opportunity to vote for these very important vestry positions. The following are the requirements for serving on the vestry according to the Diocese of Atlanta Canons & Constitution, Canon 31, Section 6, (d).(1): Those qualified for election to the office of Vestry Member shall be as follows: Any confirmed communicant in good standing of the Parish who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant at the services of the Church in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and fulfilled a stated financial commitment for church support. Election to the vestry is an honor, a privilege, and an awesome responsibility, to which every member gives his or her best effort. Please prayerfully consider those you wish to be members of your Vestry. The Blessing of the Animals will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013, to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. We are reminded of God s love for us and all creation by the exemplary life of St. Francis. Come to the church front yard at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 5, 2013. The service will take place there and is brief. Each pet and owner receives a blessing, and the pets get a treat! 4 September 25, 2013

HELP CAMP MIKELL & REMEMBER HENDREE Mikell Camp and Conference Center began in 1941 as a summer camp for children and youth and has grown into a year-round facility for camps, conferences, and retreats. Hundreds and hundreds of us use it every single year. St. David s often has the largest contingent of campers of any church in the diocese. This summer it has become abundantly clear that Camp Mikell needs to replace Bishopstead, one of the guest cottages, now elderly and ailing. Checks may be made payable to Mikell Camp and Conference Center marked Hendree Harrison Memorial and mailed to The Rev. Ken Struble Mikell Camp and Conference Center 237 Camp Mikell Court Toccoa, Georgia 30577 The Rev. Hendree Harrison, Rector Emeritus of St. David s, was born the same year as Mikell and served as a priest in this diocese for 38 years. Six years ago last month, Hendree entered, as the Prayer Book says, into the glorious company of the saints in light. He left behind many who remember him and miss him and are still a little miffed at his abrupt leavetaking. What does one have to do with the other? Mikell was dear to Hendree from his days as a small boy camper in the late 1940 s through years as a camper and counselor, and then as a dean and frequent board member. In fact, he was president of the board of governors at the time of his death. How wonderful it would be if we could replace that old decrepit cottage with a sturdy new one and name it in his memory! There is already a memorial fund for Hendree at Camp but more is needed to build the new cottage. Will you help Mikell and remember Hendree at the same time? The Rev. Hendree Harrison St. David s Rector from June 1981 March 2000 Special Award for The Rev. Swanson... Our Rector, Ken Swanson, has received the Whitney M. Young Service Award, given by the Atlanta Area Boy Scouts. He will be presented with the award at a banquet on Monday evening, October 21st. If you would like to attend the affair, you can find information at: atlantabsa.doubleknot.com/ event/1284575, and look for the 2013 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award Banquet information. www.stdavidchurch.org 5

SPECIAL PROGRAM ON WEDNESDAY, OCT. 23 The Role of Faith Leaders in Suicide Prevention with The Rev. Dr. Robert G. Certain The purpose of the program will be to educate people about suicide in America and to give them some tools for intervention, care, and counsel. Wednesday, October 23 7:00 p.m. at St. David s Episcopal Church Jeffords Fellowship Hall About The Rev. Robert Certain: As a combat aviator with the U.S. Air Force, he flew 100 missions over Southeast Asia in 1971 and 1972. He was shot down and captured in December 1972; and repatriated when the war ended a few months later. Following the Vietnam War, he attended the School of Theology, an Episcopal Church seminary in Sewanee, Tennessee, and was ordained as a priest in 1976 after he received his Master of Divinity degree. In 1990, he was awarded his Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology. Father Certain has served parishes in Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arizona and California, and recently served as Rector of St. Peter & St. Paul Episcopal Church in Marietta GA. He also serves on the Defense Health Board, on the committees on psychological health and medical ethics and on the task force for prevention of suicide in the armed forces. He is also a member of the VA Advisory Committee on Former Prisoners of War. When former President Gerald R. Ford died in late 2006, Father Certain was chosen to lead all the memorial services and to preside at his burial in Michigan. Note to parishioners: this program will take the place of the regular Wednesday night programming with Fr. Swanson and will start at 7:00 pm, not at 6:30 pm. This is because we are advertising this program to the general public and want to have a little extra time to finish the parish dinner and clean up. Dinner will start at 5:30 pm as usual and will probably last a little longer than normal. www.stdavidchurch.org 7
