RACE RELATIONS AND THE SOUTHERN BAPTISTS COLLECTION AR 788 Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives Updated August, 2012

2 Race Relations and Southern Baptists Collection AR 788 Summary Main Entry: Race Relations and Southern Baptists Collection Date Span: 1849 1994 Abstract: The collection reflects the turmoil faced by Baptists and others in the south related to segregationist policies and the Civil Rights movement. Collection includes articles, clippings, notes, pamphlets, posters, and press releases related to race relations in the life and history of the Southern Baptist Convention. Size:.75 linear ft. (2 boxes) Collection #: AR 788 Historical Sketch The collection is the result of files started and maintained by Theo Sommerkamp, Floyd A. Craig, Jim Newton, and others as a part of the resources of Baptist Press. They were originally included in the archival resources of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. Some additions were from the staff of the Historical Commission (Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives). Scope and Content Note The Southern Baptists and Race Relations Collection primarily contains articles, clippings, correspondence, notes, pamphlets, posters, and press releases. It also contains excerpts from annuals of the Southern Baptist Convention. Although the first annual included is dated 1849 only five years from the founding of the convention the majority of the material is from the late 1950s and 1960s, reflecting the turmoil of Baptists and others in the south immediately in the wake of the U. S. Supreme Court decision in May, 1954. The collection is arranged in chronological order with folders arranged alphabetically within the years. It contains 2/3 cubic feet of space, with additions to the collection expected. Arrangement Arranged in chronological order with files arranged alphabetically within each year.
