September 2014 First Lutheran Staff Administrative Pastor Rev. Lee Herberg 663-3594 Associate Pastor Rev. Christina Martin 663-3594 Administrative Assistant & Coordinator of Lay Ministries Jackie Schulz 663-3594 (o) 663-3082 (h) Custodians Ron & Mavis Watson Financial Administration Jennifer Scheet First Lutheran Is A Mission Partner with Camp of the Cross Ministries Romans 12:4-8 For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. About six weeks ago, my cell phone cashed in its chips. It was one of those free phones you could choose from when AT & T took over Cellular One. In a moment of weakness, I opted for an iphone 5s, my first smart phone. I see why they are called smart phones; I certainly feel stupid in its presence. One thing I can do now however is to start taking selfies of myself. According to Wikipedia, a selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies are often shared on social networking services such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Tumblr. They are often casual, and are typically taken either with a camera held at arm s length or in a mirror. By 2013, the word selfie had become commonplace enough to be monitored for inclusion in the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary. In November of 2013, the word selfie was announced as the word of the year by the same dictionary publisher. Today, selfies have morphed into many sub-types, notably Celebrity selfies, Political selfies and Group Selfies. A selfie orchestrated by the 86th Academy Awards host Ellen DeGeneres during the March 2nd, 2014 broadcast is the most retweeted image ever. This September, there will be a lot of selfies taken here at church; some of individuals, some of couples, some of families of various sizes and makeup, some of groups, some of special occasions, etc. We are putting together our new photo directory for the congregation. When our directory is complete, we will have a directory filled with faces, a directory that describes what we look like as a family of faith. Wednesday, September 10 th : At 6:00 P.M. all students are encouraged to come downstairs to find their classroom and meet their teachers. All kids are welcome to join in on the fun! The apostle Paul talks about the family of faith in his letter to the Romans; an excerpt from chapter 12 is at the top of this page. Paul talks about the body of Christ, the one body, being composed of many members, each unique in their own way. As a congregation, we are able to accomplish many different ministries through this gathering of selfies united in the one body, the body of Christ. Oh, and when its time for your selfie, don t forget to smile! Until next time, Pastor Lee

PAGE 2 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH September 2014 Join us at the 2014 Bismarck-Mandan CROPWALK for Hunger on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at the North Dakota Capitol steps. PAGE 8 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2014 SEPTEMBER 2014 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PAGE 5 First Lutheran Church Council Minutes Thursday, June 19, 2014 7:00PM Present: Pastor Lee Herberg, President Tammy Lapp-Harris, Vice-President Brock Schmeling, Den Na Lee Fewson, John Pake Absent: Pastor Christina Martin, Kris Elijah (excused), Secretary Jill Miller (excused), Dot Frank, Janet Reineke, Hope Swank Devotions: President Tammy Lapp-Harris called the meeting to order. Pastor Lee led devotions. Approval of Agenda: There was not a quorum so the agenda could not be approved. Secretary s Report/Review and Approval of the minutes: The Secretary s Report was reviewed. There was not a quorum so the Secretary s Report could not be approved. Financial Report/Review: Expenses for May exceeded May income by $10,479.99. Through May, 2014, expenses have exceeded income by $34, 970.86 compared with expenses exceeding income of $6,450.62 through May of 2013. Unfinished Business: Moving forward in faith: L & H Manufacturing is continuing to work on some embellishments for the new altar candlesticks and the new paschal candle. Air Handling Unit: No new updates. Policy and Procedure Manual: Jackie has almost finished retyping the policy and procedure manual. Retaining walls: The church council is assessing the degradation of the retaining wall on the south east side of the church property between the lower and upper parking lot. The top of the wall is pulling away from the sidewalk and the top of the wall is past vertical in relation to the bottom of the wall. Pastor Lee will make a follow-up call with Cashman Nursery. NEW BUSINESS: The Bismarck-Mandan Gideons would like to come to First Lutheran some Sunday this summer for a free-will opportunity to support their ministry. They have not been here for about 5 years. After discussion it was decided to invite them to come here on Sunday, August 10 th. We are needing to replace many of our steam traps and order repair kits for the others so that this needed maintenance for the heating system is complete before the boiler is filled again for the next heating season. Tunstall Corporation of Chicopee, MA is researching this for us as many of the steam traps are no longer manufactured and they are a sole source supply for obsolete components. We will have no choice but to replace/repair these traps as this was the cause for the condensate pump unit to fail due to excessive water temperatures. We do not usually have a council meeting in July. We would need to approve this and in that there was not a quorum, we were unable to address this issue.

PAGE 6 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2014 REPORTS: Pastor Lee s report 3 baptisms, 1 wedding, 1 funeral, continuing to weekly mentor and supervise William Dodd, who is a TEEM candidate serving at Simms and Almont Lutheran churches. President Tammy Lapp-Harris read an e-mail sent to Pastor Lee from Hope Swank. Due to work and school conflicts, Hope Swank is resigning her position on the church council. Tammy will be making a phone call to last year s Nominating Committee. Pastor Chris s report No report. Special Events The next ice cream social will be on Sunday, July 13 th. There is one pail of ice cream left from the ice cream social in June; Den Na Lee Fewson will pick up the other items needed for serving the root beer floats in July. Stewardship No report. Worship No report. Parish Education/Youth Vacation Bible School was held here at First Lutheran June 9 th 13 th. 25 children attended VBS this year with staff from Camp of the Cross again leading the activities for the week. The numbers were down considerably this year; we were unaware the elementary schools in Mandan had summer school in session at the same time. Next year we will need to know what schools will be having summer school and what the dates for summer school will be. Evangelism and Outreach No report but the rummage sale is scheduled for Saturday, July 19 th. We have been advertising for it in the bulletins and in the newsletter as well as on our web site. Items can be brought to the church during office hours. Property and Management Jason Tomanek has been hard at work doing pruning and landscaping. This past winter was especially hard on the bushes as we have extensive winter kill. Council will again assess the problems with the retaining walls. CORRESPONDENCE: Thank you received for gifts of $145.34 and $154.95 to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Thank you received for gift of $1,084.06 to Camp of the Cross. Thank you to Pastor Christina and Marlin and Mary Brandt for hosting the staff at their homes and to all the volunteers who helped during the week. Motion to Adjourn/Lord s Prayer: There was no motion to adjourn as we did not have an official meeting. We closed with the Lord s Prayer. Submitted by: Pastor Lee Herberg for Jill Miller Subsequent council meeting via e-mail: Brock Schmeling made a motion to approve the First Lutheran Council Minutes of May 15, 2014. Kris Elijah seconded the motion. All voted aye electronically. Brock Schmeling made a motion to not have our regularly scheduled council meeting on July 17, 2014. Den Na Lee Fewson seconded the motion. The following voted aye electronically: Brock Schmeling, Kris Elijah, Tammy Lapp-Harris, Jill Miller, Den Na Lee Fewson, John Pake First Lutheran s Lunch at First (LAF) program feeds about 400 of our Mandan High School students each week during the school year! It s a ministry that has grown immensely over the past few years and promises to grow into the future. It s great to witness God working through our volunteers as they serve and our young people as they are served all disciples of Jesus Christ! As the numbers of young people served has grown, naturally so has the budget for LAF and we are currently running near our budget limit for this year. It costs about $350 a week to feed these young people a cost of about $.87 cents per meal per student a real bargain!! So, we are asking individuals, families, businesses and corporations for some financial assistance as we move into the Fall. If you, your family or business would like to sponsor a LAF meal it would go a long way toward funding LAF. Maybe a group of families would like to sponsor a meal and help serve it!! Whatever the case let us know and thank you in advance for your contribution toward bringing Jesus command, Feed my sheep to our high school students.
