TheOutlook The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27;1 The newsletter of First United Methodist Church of Waynesburg February 2013 Dear Waynesburg First Family, Greetings to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus. (1 Corinthians 1:4 RSV ) May God bless us, one and all, as we work together to grow God s kingdom here in Waynesburg. As we look forward to spring, lent and then Easter I wanted to look at a very important aspect of our salvation, GRACE. Many of you are aware that I will be leading a study this Lenten season on Max Lucado s book GRACE; sub-titled: More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine. My sermons on Sunday will also be based on the study. In Genesis 6:6-8 we read: And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. underlining added In the Gospel of John we read, concerning John the Baptist: John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.' And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:15-17, underlining added The basic Hebrew word that is translated as grace in Genesis above has a literal meaning of, to bend down or stoop in kindness to an inferior. The basic Greek word in John above literally means to be cheer ful. At first glance I find that to be quite a contrast. Yet, I know that I am inferior to a God who bent down out of kindness for me and others, as Jesus, to take away my quilt caused by sin. And because of that, I am filled with cheer! How about you? (continued on next page) Pastor Gary Grau s Office Hours: Varied (see bulletin) Church Office Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8:30 am-12:30 pm. Please join us for Sunday Services: 8:30 am & 10:45 am F.I.S.H. Consider this: when you and I show grace to another, it is not because they are inferior, it s because we are cheer ful! Walking Your Faith Graduation On Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, 13 men from SCI-Greene graduated the Walking Your Faith II program. This was one of biggest classes we ve had. Fourteen men started the class and the reason one man didn t finish was because he was paroled what a good problem to have. Rev. Jabulani Sibanda, Facility Chaplaincy Program Director, welcomed us. Marcia Sinkovitz, Program Coordinator for Second Chance Ministries and the Walking Your Faith Program, came from Dauphin, PA. She gave a brief description of the program, especially directed to those men in attendance who are new to Walking Your Faith. She also gave a background of Jim Law, a former inmate, who was instrumental in starting this program. She gave greetings from former Governor George Leader, who turned 95 on January 19, 2013. He also helped to spearhead and continues to support Second Chance Ministries. It was great to have her here to support us. The R.L.W. Quartet (Paul Carlson, Jeff Cree, Connie Hart, and KC Waddel) sang All God Gifts and Jesus is My Lord. They truly enhanced the graduation with their gift of music. You can tell how much the men enjoy their music and appreciate them. Rev. Bill Sukolsky, minister of the First Presbyterian Church, was our keynote speaker. He spoke on A Disciple Hand, using the hand as a tool to remember the Scripture from I Corinthians 16:13-14. It was meaningful and cleaver. He has spoken for us before, and I think he enjoys coming as much as the men enjoy hearing him speak. The graduates were recognized and given Healing Poetry II books, which were written by George Leader. They were also presented with certificates of completion of the Walking Your Faith II program. We had opportunities to share our feelings about the men in the class. We have seen a lot of spiritual growth and hunger for God s knowledge in these men. What a blessing to see them mature in their faith, even since the completion of the Walking Your Faith I. The graduates shared the 12 Disciples Song sung to the tune of Bringing in the Sheaves, which Ms. Connie helped them learn over the 15 week class. As a special treat the SCI-Greene choir sang When God Ran, which has become a very special song to us. It is based on the Bible story of the Prodigal Son s return and how God Ran to greet him, just as he runs to greet us when we turn our lives around. What a joy it has been to be in God s service in this ministry. We ve commented many times that even when we re tired or the weather isn t good when we arrive on Tuesdays, whenever we leave to come home, we have a different perspective on our day. We all have been blessed by this ministry. Shirley Bailey, Janet Cree, Lori Duer, Pastor Gary Grau, Janice Gottschalk, Connie Hart, and Marilyn Facemire Prison Ministry

On Sun., Jan. 6th, the choir along with others from our church shared the Christmas Cantata with SCI-Greene. There was quite a crowd in the chapel. Rev. Kathy Higgins greeted us., The evening opened with everyone singing Let it Rise, which set the tone for the evening service. It s always special to see the expression on their faces as we share our programs with them. The choir and others did a great job, as usual. But what followed was a new and blessed experience. Since it was the first Sunday of the month, we were able to partake in communion with them. There were 3 pews up front facing the congregation. As the men are directed (12 at a time), they come and kneel at those pews to receive the bread and juice. It was such a humbling experience. We are thankful for the opportunity to share our worship with them their out pouring of appreciation for us is over whelming. Safe Sanctuary program requires two adults in the nursery and they cannot be related. We have children from babies (occasionally) to 5 years old and rarely more than 4 at a time.
