Russell Dicks / Anton Boisen Memorial Service The Russell Dicks/Anton Boisen Memorial Service is a long-celebrated tradition, established in 1971 by the College of Chaplains at the Brown Place Hotel in Denver, CO. For the Association of Professional Chaplains, and shared in meetings with others, this event has offered colleagues the opportunity to remember the lives and gifts of members who have died during the previous year. Russell L. Dicks was coauthor, with Richard D. Cabot MD, of the pioneer chaplaincy care text, The Art of Mentoring to the Sick (1936). Among his many contributions to the professional training of chaplains, Dicks developed the method of capturing clinical experience in the form of a verbatim as a valuable tool for learning. He called for the first meeting of the chaplains and became its first president in Philadelphia in 1946. Anton T. Boisen, founder of the modern clinical pastoral education movement, is noted for his explorations of the relationship between mental health and spirituality. The first to establish chaplaincy in psychiatric settings, Boisen envisioned close cooperation between medical and religious professionals in a clinical setting. His evocative image of the living human document has become a paradigm of our call to learn from one another s life stories. This year s memorial service is being held in honor of these two outstanding leaders and in memory of our colleagues. Russell Dicks/Anton Boisen Memorial Service 7
