ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA CATHOLIC CHURCH, LEONARDTOWN, MARYLAND Scripture Corner YOU ARE THE MESSIAH Jesus has reached a critical point in his ministry. The early period was marked by working miracles and teaching. But there were early misunderstandings and even threats: The Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him to put him to death. (Mark 3: 6) In the second half of his work to establish the Kingdom of God, Jesus will concentrate on his mission. In today s Gospel (Mark 8: 27 35) Jesus poses an important question: Who do people say that I am? (vs. 27) The disciples mention John the Baptist, Elijah or one of the prophets. Then Christ asks, But who do you say that I am? (vs. 29) Peter here as often is the spokesperson for the disciples. He replies to Jesus, You are the Messiah. (vs. 29) Already in the Old Testament the Messiah was important, beginning with King David. Messiah, Christ and the Anointed One all have the same meaning. Unfortunately many people, including his followers, are envisioning a royal person, politically triumphant. Our Lord immediately corrects that misunderstanding: He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. (vs. 31) Our Lord is connecting his ministry with the Suffering Servant of the Old Testament: I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who tore out my beard. My face I did not hide from insults and spitting. (Isaiah 50: 6) Later, Christ will be even more explicit about his role as the Suffering Servant: For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many [all]. (Mark 10: 45) Pope Francis has promoted a servant Church by recalling his namesake: Saint Francis shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace. (Laudato Si n. 10) Peter rebukes Jesus for predicting suffering. Jesus response is, Get behind me, Satan. You are not thinking as God does, but as human beings do. (vs. 33) In the second part of his Gospel, Mark will often cite the Suffering Servant passages from Isaiah. Our Lord will challenge each of his followers to deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. (vs. 34) ~Msgr. Ralph J. Kuehner PRAYER & WORSHIP MASS INTENTIONS this WEEK Tuesday, Sept. 18: 12:15 pm Donna Hammett (L) Wednesday, Sept. 19: St. Januarius, Bishop & Martyr 8:30 am Robert Lee, Peggy, & Jimmy Miles Thursday, Sept. 20: Sts.
