Sung Eucharist in thanksgiving for the Bicentenary of the National Society Monday 26 th September 2011 at 2pm 1

From the Chief Education Officer for the Church of England, and General Secretary of the National Society, The Reverend Janina Ainsworth. Two hundred years ago Joshua Watson and other leading members of the Church of England met to found the National Society for the Promotion of the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church. The first meeting took place on 16 October 1811. Their aim was to build a church school in every parish and launched a major fundraising campaign. Anyone wanting to build a school could apply to the National Society for a grant so long as the education offered was based on the teachings of the Church of England. They knew that moral and spiritual education was just as important as learning skills or a trade and believed that the worship and instruction of the Church of England was the way to develop character in the pupils. By 1861 there were 12,000 schools in union with the National Society across England and Wales; not quite a school in every parish but a phenomenal achievement, all funded by donations from parishes and people. And all this started at least 60 years before the government began to provide schools for anyone. The National Society and church schools are still providing education for all, and still putting spiritual development at the heart. Believing that every child is a child of God means that every child should have the very best opportunities, to learn and to grow, to contribute to the whole community and to be the best they can. In this anniversary year we celebrate all the schools where Christian education is offered to the children and families of the diocese. And we look forward to the next 200 years! 2

Celebrant: The Right Reverend Dr John Hind, Bishop of Chichester Please stand Hymn (AMNS 464) God is here; as we his people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share. Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of his Spirit into open minds and hearts. Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; here are table, font and pulpit, here the cross has central place; here in honesty of preaching, here in silence as in speech, here in newness and renewal God the Spirit comes to each. 3

Welcome Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd s flock and fold, here, as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us, as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore. Lord of all, of church and Kingdom, in an age of change and doubt keep us faithful to the gospel, help us work your purpose out. Here, in the day s dedication, all we have to give, receive. We, who cannot live without you, we adore you, we believe. Words: F. Pratt Green (1903-2000) Music: Blaenwern - William P. Rowlands (1860-1937) The Very Reverend Nicholas Frayling, Dean of Chichester The Bishop greets the people In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit Amen. Peace be with you and also with you. 4

Prayers of Penitence The people are invited to call to mind and confess their sins Turn your face toward me and be gracious: forgive me all my sins. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lead me in the ways of your truth and teach me. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Call to mind your compassion and loving kindness, for they are from of old. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive us our sins, open our eyes to God s truth, strengthen us to do God s will and give us the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

Gloria in excelsis [Organ] Glo-ry to God, Glo-ry to God, Glo-ry to God in the High-est. Glo-ry to God in the High-est, and peace to his peo-ple on earth. Lord God, Hea vn-ly King, Al-mighty God and Fa-ther, we wor-ship you we give you thanks, we praise you for your glo-ry. Glo-ry to God, Glo-ry to God, Glo-ry to God in the High-est. Lord, Je - sus Christ, on ly Son of the Fa-ther. Lord God Lamb of God you take a way the sin of the world: have mer-cy on us; You are sea-ted at the right hand of the Fa-ther: re-ceive our prayer. Glo-ry to God, Glo-ry to God, Glo-ry to God in the High-est. For you a-lone are the Ho-ly one, You a - lone are the Lord, You a-lone are the most high, Je-sus Christ, with the Ho-ly Spi-rit, in the Glo-ry of God the Fa - ther. Glo-ry to God, Glo - ry to God, Glo-ry to God in the High-est. Music: Mass of St Thomas by David Thorne 6

The Collect Let us pray. God our creator, who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness: we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief, shine into the hearts of all your people, and reveal the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please sit The National Society Vision Music The Reverend Janina Ainsworth, General Secretary of the National Society Central C of E Junior School, Chichester As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you. You alone are my heart s desire and I long to worship you. You alone are my strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire and I long to worship you. 7

Reading I want you more than gold or silver, only you can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver and the apple of my eye. You alone are my strength, my shield... You re my friend and you re my brother, even though you are a king. I love you more than any other, so much more than anything. You alone are my strength, my shield Words and music: Martin Nystrom (b.1956) Hebrews 13: 7-8, 17-21 Read by Mike Wilson, Diocesan Director of Education Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls and will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with sighing - for that would be harmful to you. Pray for us; we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honourably in all things. I urge you all the more to do this, so that I may be restored to you very soon. Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. At the end the reader says 8 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Please stand Hymn (NEH 186) Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord: unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name: make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age the same; his holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might: powers and dominions lay their glory by; proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word: firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children s children and for evermore. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) based on Luke 1: 46-55 Music: Woodlands - Walter Greatorex (1877-1949) 9

Gospel Reading When the Gospel is announced, the reader says The Lord be with you And also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Matthew 11: 25-30 At that time Jesus said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Please sit The Right Reverend Mark Sowerby, Bishop of Horsham Please stand 10

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 11

Prayers of Intercession Please sit or stand Led by The Right Reverend Wallace Benn, Bishop of Lewes In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, You promised through your Son Jesus Christ to hear us when we pray in faith. We give thanks for the work of the National Society over the last two hundred years and pray for its contribution in the changing world of education today. We pray especially for the National Society Council, its officers and staff; give them wisdom and understanding as they work for your Church in the service of Christ. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. We give thanks for all the church schools in England and Wales and pray for them as they seek to provide a distinctive and inclusive community in which children and young people can grow and learn together. We remember too, our partner Anglican schools in West Africa; direct and guide them as they use their limited resources to provide an education for the young people of the communities they serve. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. 12

We give thanks for the 158 church primary and secondary schools in our diocese and remember all those who work and study in them. We pray for all governors, headteachers, teachers, support staff, parents and pupils; give them grace that they may serve Christ in one another, and love as he loves us. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. We give thanks for the Diocesan Board of Education and for its contribution to the life of our diocese. We pray for all members of the Schools Team at Church House; may they be united in your truth as they work to support, develop and sustain all the church schools of our diocese. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. We remember all those who have gone before us in the service of Christ and whose work benefits us today. We give thanks particularly for the vision and lives of the three men who met at Joshua Watson s house in East London in 1811 and started the National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Rejoicing in the fellowship of St Richard of Chichester and all your saints, we commend ourselves and the whole creation to your unfailing love, saying together: Lord, by your presence, light up the past, that we might learn from it with thankfulness. Light up the present, that we might live in it with love. Light up the future, that we might prepare for it in hope. As we watch and wait and pray, may we be always ready to walk with the Lord, who is already and always with us. Amen. 13

The Peace Please stand We are the body of Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. may exchange a sign of peace. remain standing to sing the offertory hymn. During the offertory hymn, the new Diocesan banner for the National Society (made by Wendy Oakeshott) is carried in procession to the Arundel Screen, to be blessed by the Bishop. Hymn (Sing Praise 176) 14 Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions: all are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak, and words are strong and true, where all God s children dare to seek to dream God s reign anew. Here the cross shall stand as witness and as symbol of God s grace; here as one we claim the faith of Jesus: all are welcome, all are welcome... Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat: a banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; as we share in Christ the feast that frees us: all are welcome, all are welcome... Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond the wood and stone to heal and strengthen, serve and teach, and live the Word they ve known. here the outcast and the stranger bear the image of God s face; let us bring an end to fear and danger: all are welcome, all are welcome... Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard and loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace, let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: all are welcome, all are welcome... Words: Marty Haugen (b.1950) Music: Two Oaks Marty Haugen 15

Blessing of the new Diocesan Banner Heavenly Father, you have invited us to share in your banquet and receive signs of your love and grace in bread and wine. Receive and bless this banner as a sign of the celebration of your grace in the work of the National Society and the 158 church schools in Sussex. May those who see it be strengthened to share in your mission to children, young people and families across Sussex; though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Amen. The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. 16

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 17

Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. Please stand or sit 18

The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The Bishop breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Agnus Dei 19

Giving of Communion The Bishop invites the people to communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Hymn during Communion Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here. Come, bow before him now, with reverence and fear. In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground. Be, still for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here. Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around; He burns with holy fire, with splendour he is crowned. How awesome is the sight, our radiant King of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place; He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace. No work too hard for him, in faith receive from him. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. Words and music: David J. Evans (1986)/Thankyou Music 21

Music during Communion Central C of E Junior School Choir A new commandment I give unto you: that you love one another as I have loved you. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. Words: based on John 13: 34-35 Father, we adore you, lay our lives before you: how we love you! Jesus, we adore you, lay our lives before you: how we love you! Spirit, we adore you, lay our lives before you: how we love you! Words and music: Terrye Coelho (b.1952) Please stand 22

Prayer after Communion Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. Hymn (NEH 336) Angel-voices ever singing Round thy throne of light, Angel-harps for ever ringing, Rest not day nor night; Thousands only live to bless thee And confess thee Lord of might. Thou who art beyond the farthest Mortal eye can scan, Can it be that thou regardest Songs of sinful man? Can we know that thou art near us, And wilt hear us? Yea, we can. 23

For we know that thou rejoicest O er each work of thine; Thou didst ears and hands and voices For thy praise design; Craftsman s art and music s measure For thy pleasure combine. In thy house, great God, we offer Of thine own to thee; And for thine acceptance proffer unworthily Hearts and minds and hands and voices In our choicest Psalmody. Honour, glory, might and merit Thine shall ever be, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed Trinity. Of the best which thou hast given Earth and heaven Render thee. Words: Francis Pott (1832-1909) Music: Angel Voices E.G. Monk (1819-1900) 24

The Dismissal The Lord be with you and also with you. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who has made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and for ever. Hear the teaching of Jesus: Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it. Go now to do God s will; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. Music after the Service Final from Symphony No. 1 Louis Vierne (1870-1937) As you leave the Cathedral, there will be an opportunity to contribute to the work of Anglican church schools in Liberia and Sierra Leone. 25
