SERMON NOTES THE NEW BIRTH

Fan or follower John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. NKJV In John 3, we read about Nicodemus, a well-known and well-respected man of God! Nicodemus was a member of the Great Sanhedrin, an elite group of 72 religious leaders. He had become an admirer of Jesus by listening to Jesus teach and watching as He performed incredible miracles. Nicodemus was ready to take his relationship with Jesus to another level, but it wasn t that easy. It never is. There would be much to lose if he went public as a follower of Jesus. What would people think if they found out that Nicodemus was an admirer of this homeless carpenter-turned-rabbi from a nothing town called Nazareth? At the very least he would lose his position in the Sanhedrin and his reputation as a religious leader. Being a secret admirer of Jesus cost him nothing, but becoming a follower came with a high price tag. It always does! So Nicodemus finds himself at what would seem to be a surprising crossroads. He would have to choose between having religion or a relationship with Jesus. There is no way for him to truly become a follower of Jesus without losing his religion. This wouldn t be the last time religion would get in the way of someone following Jesus! John 3:2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him. NKJV It would be easy to overlook this detail and dismiss it as insignificant. But ask yourself Why would he come to Jesus at night? He had plenty of opportunities during the day. Jesus was teaching in public places where it would have been quite convenient for Nicodemus to talk with him for a few minutes. However, at night, no one would see him. At night, he could avoid awkward questions from the other leaders. At night, he could spend time with Jesus without anybody knowing. If he could speak with Jesus when no one was around, maybe he could begin a relationship with Jesus without having to make any real changes. He could follow Jesus without it impacting his job! In fact, his friends and family wouldn t even have to know. He could talk to Jesus at night - that way it wouldn t disrupt his comfortable and established life. That sounds like a lot of folks I know people happy to follow Jesus as long it doesn t require any significant changes or have negative implications. Here is the reality that Nicodemus was about ready to have impressed on him and one we need to understand there is no way to follow Jesus without Him interfering with your life! Following Jesus will always cost you something. For Nicodemus it would cost him a powerful position. It would cost him the respect of his coworkers. It would cost him friendships. It would likely cost him some family relationships. Has Jesus cost you anything? How has following Jesus interfered with your life? Nicodemus begins his conversation with Jesus by making it clear that he has decided that He really is from God. He has come to a point of belief, but where would he go from there? Jesus doesn t waste time but gets right to the heart of the matter! John 3:3-5: Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. NKJV 1

That was hard for Nicodemus to hear. He had memorized the first five books of the Bible when he was a boy and had spent his adult life building a religious resume. But Jesus makes it clear to him that his righteous acts and religious rituals are not the measurements He is using. Nicodemus must humble himself and be born again into a whole new way of life. Nicodemus had made a decision about Jesus, but that s not the same as following Him. Jesus would not accept a relationship with Nicodemus where he simply believed. Jesus wanted Nicodemus to follow Him, not just at night but during the day as well! Many have made a decision to believe in Jesus without making a commitment to follow Him. However, Jesus never offered such an option. Biblical belief is more than mental assent or verbal acknowledgment; it is a commitment to follow! I m not saying that following is more important than believing. What I am saying is that the two are firmly connected. They are the heart and lungs of faith. One can t live without the other. Jesus is looking for more than words of belief; He s looking to see how those words are lived out in our lives. To truly believe is to follow. When we decide to believe in Jesus without making a commitment to follow him, we become nothing more than fans! What about you? Are you a fan or a follower of Jesus? Many of us are quick to say, Yes, I m a follower of Jesus, but I m not sure we really understand sometimes what we are saying. To quote Inigo Montoya, I do not think that means what you think it means. Let me clarify what I am not asking: Do you go to church? Are your parents or grandparents Christians? Do you own three or more Bibles? Have you ever appeared in a church directory? Did you grow up going to VBS/church camp? Is your ring tone a church song? In the gospels, Jesus invites people to follow Him and some do but most walk away! They are not followers of Jesus they are fans - enthusiastic admirers. Here is how Jesus describes a fan - Revelation 3:15-17: I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked NKJV A fan is a person who has a Burger-King religion! Have it your way! Isaiah 53:6 All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God s paths to follow our own NLT Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. NKJV A fan will call Jesus Lord, but won t actually do the will of God in heaven. They do religion, but have no real relationship with Christ. 2

That kind of life does not work and will only result in pain, spiritual hang-ups and sinful habits. Christianity isn t just something we do, it s who we are! Jesus was never interested in having fans, what He wanted was followers. Here is how Jesus describes a follower - Luke 14:33 - So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own. NLT Friends, Jesus didn t just come to change us, He came to kill us, He calls for us to die to ourselves! Fans want Jesus to do a little touch-up work, but Jesus wants to do a complete renovation of our lives. Fans come to Jesus thinking tune-up, while Jesus is thinking complete overhaul. Fans don t mind a little makeup here and there, but Jesus wants to give us a complete makeover! Fans are ok with a little redecorating; Jesus wants to completely remodel us. Fans want to just survive Jesus wants us to be more than conquerors! Fans want to follow Jesus but not so closely that He interferes with their life. But unless you completely surrender your life to Jesus and move from being just a fan, an enthusiastic admirer of Jesus, to being a true follower of Jesus, heaven will never be your home! Following Jesus forces us to change our lives. He demands our time, possessions, and interests. If we are wavering in our commitment, if we are saddle-sore from fence straddling, Jesus says Either get all the way in or get all the way out, but stop standing in the door, you re causing a draft! Maybe you are someone who wants to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires sacrifice. You want to follow Jesus into heaven, but you don t necessarily want to take a cross with you. But the only invitation that Jesus offered was an invitation to die to yourself, and to find your life in Him. In teaching people what it means to be a Christian, we spend much of our time and effort bringing them to a point of belief without clearly calling them to follow: Matthew 28:18-20: And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen. NKJV Maybe that s your story. When you heard the gospel, someone talked at great length and with deep passion about you making a decision to believe and obey the gospel, but said little about the fact that this commitment would change the way you live your life. This is called selling Jesus. A good salesperson emphasizes all the positive things they think you ll be glad to hear, but they quickly skip over what might be less appealing. Churches sometimes do the same because they don t want to offend anyone! I wonder if some well-intentioned preachers may have missed their calling as late-night infomercial salesman they preach a gospel that costs you nothing but offers you everything! Jesus makes it clear to Nicodemus and to us - following Him requires a commitment that will cost a great deal. This is true throughout all of Scripture. Moses couldn t follow God without standing in front of Pharaoh. Noah couldn t follow God without building an ark that would bring ridicule from his neighbors. Daniel couldn t follow God by praying to him alone without being thrown into a lion s den. Following Jesus isn t something you can do at night where no one notices. It s a 24 hour a day commitment that will interfere with your life. That s not the small print that s a guarantee! 3

So in case someone left it out or forgot to mention it when they explained what it meant to be a Christian, let me be clear: There is no forgiveness without repentance; no salvation without surrender; no life without death; no believing without committing. Many say, I believe in Jesus; I m a big fan, but don t ask me to follow. I don t mind coming to church on the weekends. I ll pray before meals. I ll even slap a Jesus fish on my bumper. But I don t want Jesus to interfere with my life. Jesus makes it clear that being a fan who believes without making any real commitment to follow isn t an option. I. Nicodemus When Nicodemus meets with Jesus in John 3, we re left wondering what he s going to do. The silence seemed to identify him as a fan who wasn t even an enthusiastic admirer, but a secret admirer who never managed to take his relationship with Jesus from words of belief to a life of commitment. But it turns out this isn t the last we read of Nicodemus. The next time we meet up with him is in John 7. The popularity of Jesus has grown immensely. The religious leaders are overcome with jealousy and fear. The Sanhedrin is meeting together to find a reason to silence Jesus. Nicodemus is sitting among his peers as they conspire to bring Jesus down. Nicodemus believes that Jesus is from God, but would he say anything? Would his belief translate into any kind of commitment? I m sure he sat there hoping someone else would say something in defense of Jesus. Surely he wasn t the only one who believed. His mind is racing with what it s going to cost him if he goes public with his conviction. Then we read: John 7:50-51: Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them, Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing? NKJV Though he stops short of saying what he believes, he does risk his career and reputation by publicly speaking up on behalf of Jesus. This is no longer a private conversation about what he believes. He allows what he believes to interfere with his work, his relationships, and his financial future. In that moment he stops being just a fan, and begins the journey of following. When he speaks out in defense of Jesus, we read that the rest of the Sanhedrin responded this way: John 7:52 - They answered and said to him, Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee. NKJV I know that doesn t sound very harsh, but they are clearly trying to embarrass Nicodemus for associating with Jesus. Nazareth was a small insignificant town that no one was proud to be from. Apparently they even had a saying in those days, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? The Sanhedrin laughed at Jesus because of where he was from, and now they use it to attack Nicodemus. It was meant to be a hard shot to his ego and a threat to his religious reputation that he had worked so hard to establish. It was a reality check for Nicodemus. 4

Any hope Nicodemus had that he could follow Jesus without it interfering with his life was shot down with that one question, Are you from Galilee, too? I ve discovered there is almost always a moment like this for believers. They are put in a position where they have to decide between being a fan or a follower. At the end of John s gospel, there is one other brief reference to Nicodemus. John 19:39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. NKJV This would have been an extremely expensive and costly gesture it would cost him more than just money. There was no longer any chance of hiding his affection. Things had moved past words of belief expressed in the darkness of night. He was no longer a secret admirer. He wasn t just an enthusiastic admirer. He had become a follower! That s the last time we read of Nicodemus in Scripture. Christian tradition asserts that he was martyred sometime in the first century. II. Conclusion Jesus has a lot of fans these days people who cheer for Him when things are going well, but who walk away when it s a difficult season. Fans who sit safely in the stands cheering, but know nothing of the sacrifice and pain of the field. Fans of Jesus know all about Him, but they don t know Him! My concern is that many of our churches in America have become fan factories because we have separated the message of believe from the message follow. Because of that, churches have gone from being sanctuaries to becoming stadiums. And every week all the fans come to the stadium where they cheer for Jesus but have no interest in truly following Him. Jesus never asked us to sit on the sidelines and cheer for his cause. Will you decide to pay the price will you consecrate yourself to the Lord today will you be a true follower of Jesus Christ? The world needs Christians who are willing to pay the price Christians who are completely dedicated to serving God come-what-may! Exodus 32:26 Who is on the Lord s side? Let him come unto me KJV It s time to decide - are you just a fan or are you a true follower of Jesus? 5
