THE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY Welcome to our service of Holy Communion. As today s service begins, a gong will sound, calling us to stillness before God. As its sound fades away, we stand to sing our processional hymn. If you are unfamiliar with the ritual customs of the Anglican Church, we invite you to simply relax with the liturgy and let the rest of the congregation carry you in worship. Call to Silence Processional Hymn: #5 Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. We have come to worship God, the living God, Who calls prophets and teachers to bear witness. We have come to praise God, the almighty God, Who answers the forces of hatred and hurt with the power of grace. We have come to worship God, all-gracious God, Who chooses even you and me, to receive and carry the Word of life and hope. All glory to God! Song of Praise # 368 He Came Down 1. He came down that we may have love; he came down that we may have love; he came down that we may have love, hallelujah for evermore. Leader: Why did he come? 2. He came down that we may have peace; he came down that we may have peace; he came down that we may have peace, hallelujah for evermore. Leader: Why did come? 3. He came down that we may have joy; he came down that we may have joy; he came down that we may have joy, hallelujah for evermore. 2

Collect Living God, in Christ you make all things new. Transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The children are invited to come forward at this time, before going to downstairs to Spirit Zone. They return for communion. There are classes for children, tweens, and teens. Nursery is also available (ask an usher for more information). A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah 1:4-10 THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy. But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a boy ; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 71:1-6 BAS (Green Book) page 795 A Reading from the First Book of Corinthians 13:1-13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then 3

4 we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn #449 How Shall They Hear the Word of God vs 1-2 The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke 4:21-30 The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Gradual Hymn: # 449 vs 3 Homily: The Rev. David Ney The Apostles Creed BAS p. 189 Prayers of the People The Peace We are all one in Christ Jesus. We belong to him through faith, heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace. The Peace of the Lord be with you all. And also with you.

5 Offertory Hymn: #309 Praise the Lord with the Sound of Trumpet Doxology: Praise God from whom all blessing flow; praise him, all creatures, here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST The Prayer over the Gifts: Loving God, before the world began you called us. Make holy all we offer you this day, and strengthen us in that calling. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer #2, BAS page 193 Sanctus (tune #735, Schubert) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full, full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. The Lord s Prayer Breaking of the Bread We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. All are welcome to join us at the Lord s Table, including children. If you prefer to receive a blessing, please cross your arms. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. As you come forward for communion, you are invited to dip your fingers or cross yourself with the baptismal waters, as a sign of the renewal of your own baptismal vows.

6 Communion Hymn: Ubi Caritas et Amor Lyrics: Live in charity and steadfast love, live in charity; God will dwell with you. Prayer after Communion (please stand) Blessing Gracious God, our hands have taken holy things; our lives have been nourished by the body of your Son. May we who have eaten at this holy table be strengthened for service in your world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Announcements Recessional Hymn: #371 To God Be the Glory The Dismissal of the Community
