The tragedy is not that we who occupy the middle class are rich when compared to the larger world but that we are rich and utterly unaware. We are rich and forget that we are rich. The scandal is not how much we have but how little we think we have, and thus, how much more we expect and demand
Our souls are in danger. In danger of the felony of ingratitude. In danger of straying from the God whose goodness is so immense and so often ignored. ~ Jeff Manion, Satisfied
Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Heb. 13:15 Through Him, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.
Five Ways a Thankful Spirit Manifests Itself: I. Thanksgiving is a Spirit of Gratitude - We Relish the Reality Luke 7:36-48 of Our Salvation One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee s house and reclined at the table
Luke 7:36-48 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment
Luke 7:36-48 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he answered, Say it, Teacher.
Luke 7:36-48 A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more? Simon answered, The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt. And he said to him, You have judged rightly.
Luke 7:36-48 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment
Luke 7:36-48 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little. And he said to her, Your sins are forgiven. I Corinthians 4:7 What do you have that you did not receive?

II. Thanksgiving is a Spirit of Reception - We Receive God s I Timothy 6:17 Gifts with Joy As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
Eat foods you love to eat, listen to music that moves your soul, play a sport that stretches and challenges you, read books that refresh your spirit, wear clothes that make you happy, surround yourself with beauty and as you do these things, give thanks to God for his wonderful goodness. Reflect on what a gracious God he is to have thought of these gifts
Take the time to experience and savor joy, then direct your heart toward God so that you come to know he is the giver of every good and perfect gift. Nothing is too small if it produces true joy in us and causes us to turn toward God in gratitude and delight. ~ John Ortberg, The Life You've Always Wanted

Psalm 36:7-9 How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings. They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house; And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.
IV. Thanksgiving is a Spirit of Trust - We Rejoice in God s Sovereignty Over All Acts 16:19-25 But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said,...
Acts 16:19-25 These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice. The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely
Acts 16:19-25 Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

"He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.
A rich self has a distinct attitude toward the past, the present, and the future. It surveys the past with gratitude for what it has received, not with annoyance about what it hasn t achieved or about how little it has been given. A rich self lives in the present with contentment it is always having all sufficiency in everything
A rich self looks toward the future with trust. It gives rather than holding back in fear of coming out too short, because it believes God s promise that God will take care of it. Finite and endangered, the rich self still gives, because its life is hidden with Christ in the infinite, unassailable, and utterly generous God, the Lord of the present, the past, and the future. ~ Miraslov Volf, Free of Charge
