THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Behold, in the depths of the night, under our eyes a Star appears. Someone leads us step by step toward the source of light. Abraham the believer took this route before us; joyous, we go toward the Child whose new Day we have seen. The call from a distant rendezvous rings in our heart, the Father will secretly, up till the end, lead us toward His son. Already the city of David appears before our eyes; The quest in our hearts we follow in your light, Lamb of God. J. Crestien HOUSE BLESSING FOR EPIPHANY Epiphany is a day to make our homes glitter with the Christmas joy and the gifts of the Magi. Orthodox Christians bless their homes on this day and say the following prayer. You might want to bless your house today with these simple words: God of Bethlehem and of Cana, God of Jordan s leaping waters. In baptism you bring us into your family. You wed us, embracing us as your beloved. May we fill this home we have made with kindness to one another, with hospitality to guests, and with abundant care for every stranger. By the gentle light of a star, guide home all who seek You on paths of faith, hope and love, where we will join the angels in proclaiming Your praise: Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever. Amen. NEW DIRECTOR OF FAITH FORMATION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND CONFIRMATION PROGRAMS We are very pleased to welcome to St. Bernard s our new Director of Adolescent Faith Formation. Her name is Christina Pichette and she will work with teachers, students and parents of our Middle School and Confirmation Programs. She will also assist us in establishing a new program for Post-Confirmation High School students. Christina comes to us with a very rich background. She is a graduate of Assumption College and received her Master s Degree in Theological Studies at Providence College. She has worked in the field of Faith Formation and Youth Ministry at parishes in Worcester, Boston and Portsmouth. During the summer of 2016 she led a group of teens to World Youth Day in Poland where they had a chance to meet and pray with Pope Francis. Recently she and her husband re-located to East Greenwich and we are very happy that she was able to become a part of our program. We wish her well and look forward to wonderful 2 nd half or the year with Dawn Masterson working with the elementary grades and Christina Pichette directing the middle and high school grades. 2

The N K Food Pantry For January the Pantry needs: Crackers, Cereal, Hearty soups like beef stew, Hygiene items: deodorant, soap, shampoo & conditioner, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, feminine hygiene pads & tampons, diapers, and adult diapers Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as an exceptional work of human creative genius. This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons. 4
