Immaculate Conception St. Joseph Parish Leavenworth, KS 3 RCIA From the Desk of Br. David If you know someone who is thinking about becoming Catholic, invite them to come to the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, which begins August 29th at 7:00 PM in Kinzler Hall. This is a process of discernment over several months. We begin by answering questions. We do not assume that everyone who comes will automatically become Catholic. This is a chance to learn about the Catholic faith in a nonthreatening environment. An African proverb says that it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a parish, a whole parish, to bring a new Catholic to life in the Church. In today s Gospel we see that Christ was not able to perform any mighty deeds in his own village, because the people there did not respond with faith. Let us work together to bring people to the Church. And above all let us all respond with faith, praying for those people who are seeking Christ in their lives. Hospitals, Care Centers, and Nursing Homes Because of privacy laws, hospitals do not give out any information regarding who is in the hospital. For us to know, the patient or family member must call the parish office and notify us. To receive Communion, the patient or family member must call the hospital s Pastoral Care Department or the Parish Office and asked to be put on the Communion list. When entering a care facility or Nursing Home, please ask the administration about their Pastoral Care. Most centers have good relationships with their close Catholic parishes and Eucharistic ministers, and will tell you what Pastoral Services they have. CONFIRMATION ACTIVITY DAY All candidates for Confirmation next Spring are required to participate in our Activity Day on Tuesday, July 10 at St. Joseph Church. We will begin with Mass at 8:30 AM, followed by Confirmation Sessions until 3:00 PM. Lunch will be provided. If you have not completed your Confirmation interview with Br. David, please call him at 682-3953 to schedule a time. These interviews must be done before the end of August. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION All students who are not in Catholic school from grades K-8 should be enrolled in our Sunday Religious Education Program. Applications are in the back of the Church. See Br. David for more details. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD Please consider helping with our Children s Liturgy of the Word Program on Sunday mornings. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age in order to take the required VIRTUS safe environment program. Contact Br. David at 682-3953. Please visit our new Parish Library maintained by the St. Joseph Lay Carmelites, located in St. Joseph s Kinzler Hall. The library is self service. If you have books to donate, you can drop them off at the Parish Office, give them to any Lay Carmelite member, or call Christine Clark at 913-758-9104. Immaculate Conception Altar Society The Immaculate Conception Altar Society has elected a new board of officers. The new board will take over at the July 24, 2018 meeting. The incoming officers are: President - Susan Aaron; Vice President - Pauline Nichols; Secretary Colleen Rogers; and Treasurer Helen Boyd. As out-going President, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the ladies who served with me: Judith Shreder; Sue Suwalsky; Marilyn Murray and Helen Boyd. Your help and support was greatly appreciated. All of us wish the incoming board the best of luck. Thank you again. Joan Ponder On Monday, July 16, at a 7:00 PM Mass at St. Joseph Church, and at the conclusion of our 40 Hours of Eucharistic Adoration, we will join Carmelite Parishes around the world in celebrating the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Anyone wishing to be enrolled in the Scapular Confraternity can do so after Mass. There will also be an Ice Cream Social following the Mass in Kinzler Hall to celebrate the feast.

July 8, 2018 - Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 This Week in our Parish Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last weekend I had the opportunity to speak at all of our Masses regarding the launching of our Combined Archdiocesan and Parish Capital Campaign, One Faith, One Family, One Future in Christ. Because many people are traveling at this time of the year, I m sure that not everyone had the opportunity to hear my presentation. This Capital Campaign will certainly be the focus for our parish over the next six months. We have received permission from the Archdiocese to conduct a Combined Campaign which allows us to raise funds simultaneously for the Archdiocese and for the restoration of our stained glass windows at St. Joseph Church. Our Combined Campaign Goal for Immaculate Conception St. Joseph Parish is $900,000 $432,000 for the Archdiocese and $468,000 for the Stained Glass Window project. We presently have approximately $100,000 in the St. Joseph Maintenance Fund to dedicate to the Stained Glass Window Project. In today s bulletin, I would like to focus on the Archdiocesan component of the Capital Campaign, and next week I will focus on the Parish component. Archbishop Naumann has said, aware of his retirement as Archbishop in six years, that he would like to fund some critical projects in the Archdiocese, while he is still at the helm of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. The $65 million to be raised by the campaign will be distributed as follows: $22 million will be dedicated for parishes, parish schools, and evangelization. At least, 25% of all the funds raised in every parish will be returned to that parish for their specific needs. (In our case, if we meet our $900,000 goal, 52% of the campaign funds will be returned to us for the St. Joseph Stained Glass Window Project.) $17 Million will be dedicated for the Retirement Fund and Retirement Housing for Archdiocesan priests. $10 Million will be dedicated to funding the purchase and capital investments in Villa St. Francis Skilled Nursing Facility in Olathe, KS. Another $10 Million will be dedicated to update Savior of the World Pastoral Center, including increase handicap accessibility. Finally $6 Million will be spent to fund the campaign operations themselves. Please see page five of today s bulletin with more detailed information on the campaign. I want to remind all of our parishioners that you are most welcome to attend an open forum with me this Monday, July 9, at 7:00 PM in St. Joseph Church. I will spend a little time once again outlining the scope and details of the Combined Campaign. I will also give you plenty of time to ask questions, and to express your opinions and any concerns you might have regarding the campaign. Also, please note that we will be conducting 40 hours of Eucharistic Adoration in St. Joseph Church, July 12-16, prior to the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to pray for the success of the campaign. God bless you always! Fr. David SATURDAY, JULY 7 4:00 pm Vigil Mass (SJ) 5:30 pm Vigil Mass (IC) SUNDAY, JULY 8 8:00 am Sunday Mass (SJ) 10:30 am Sunday Mass (IC) Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time MONDAY, JULY 9 7:00 pm Open Forum with Fr. This time of Adoration will be an opportunity for our Parish Family to pray for the success of our Combined Capital Campaign.
