FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear friends in Christ, This weekend, we take a break from the Ordinary Time Sundays to observe the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist as the great feast falls on the Sunday this year. Pope Benedict a few years ago took time in his Angelus message to explain the significance of this feast: Today, 24 June, we are celebrating the Solemnity of St John the Baptist. He is the only saint with the exception of the Virgin Mary whose birth the liturgy celebrates and it does so because it is closely connected with the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God. In fact, from the time when he was in his mother s womb John was the precursor of Jesus: the Angel announced to Mary his miraculous conception as a sign that nothing is impossible to God (Lk 1:37), six months before the great miracle that brings us salvation, God s union with man brought about by the Holy Spirit. The four Gospels place great emphasis on the figure of John the Baptist, the prophet who concludes the Old Testament and inaugurates the New, by identifying Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah, the Anointed One of the Lord. In fact, Jesus himself was to speak of John in these terms: This is he of whom it is written Behold I send my messenger before your face, / who shall prepare your way before you. Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he! (Mt 11:10-11). Dear friends, the Virgin Mary helped her elderly kinswoman Elizabeth when she was expecting John to bring her pregnancy to completion. May she help all people to follow Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, whom the Baptist proclaimed with deep humility and prophetic fervor. POPE BENEDICT Wishing you every blessing, Fr. Johnson THANK YOU... Fr. Bill Heric Please join us for a reception thanking Fr.Bill Heric for his many years of Ministry here at St. Jude and wish him well on his new Ministry in Seattle at Christ Our Hope Church. Saturday, June 30th after the 5pm Mass for Wine, Cheese and Cake Sunday, July 1st after the 9am & 11am Mass for Coffee, Donuts and Cake PETER S PENCE COLLECTION This week, we will take the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please be generous. FAITH FORMATION Vacation Bible School s theme this year is BIRTHDAY BLAST! This week long birthday bash will instill an awareness of God's amazing creation and the beauty and dignity of the human person. Our kids will receive life-giving lessons on what it means to be a child of God. DATES: July 23-27 AGES: 4-12 LOCATION: St Jude's Parish Hall COST: $45.00 TIME: 9AM - 12PM GO TO https://www.stjude-redmond.org/parish-life/education to get registration forms and information. You can also pick them up in the office during regular business hours. Completed forms can be turned in to the office. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2018 Help Support the Annual Catholic Appeal! As of June 1st, we have had 393 families participate. Those families have pledged $193,016 toward a parish goal of $270,000. Everything given above and beyond our ACA goal comes back to the parish and will go toward improving the heating, cooling and ventilation of the Church. How will you participate this year? More than ever, your support is essential to more than 60 ministries and services that our Church provides throughout western Washington. Because some of your fellow parishioners will not be able to financially support the appeal this year, would you consider a gift of $1 a day of $365? Your gift will help us to do the work Jesus has entrusted to us. If you cannot support the ACA financially this year, please pray for the Archdiocese of and its ministries. Thank you if you have already made your gift! If not, please fill out a pledge envelope today or go online to donate: www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate For Mobile devices: https://www.seattlearchdiocese.org/stewardship/ MobACA/MobDonate.aspx -3-

SOCIAL JUSTICE OUR FAMILIES Families can be powerful indicators of paths we take in life. Our environment, e s p e c i a l l y o u r f a m i l y environments, shape who we are and who we become. The New Testament tells us about the familial relationship between Elizabeth and Mary, making Jesus and John the Baptist cousins. Should we be surprised that Jesus and John the Baptist were charismatic preachers, attracting crowds, challenging religious and political leaders, and paying the ultimate price for their actions? Today we consider the role of family in our own upbringing and that of John and his cousin Jesus. It has been said the church is the domestic church. It is there that children first learn the faith, first learn what is important, what is a priority. How a family acts indicates their priorities. A nourishing faith life is often nurtured first in the family. May our families be places of safety, nourishment, love, care and faith. PRAYER FOR FAMILIES AT THE BORDER In our tragic, terrible new version of Scripture, We see the sacrifice of the Holy Innocents To feed the mad hunger of power Determined to assert itself over The threat of a reign of love Incarnated. Christ, we ask you to guide us Through this nightmare at the border, We ask you to strengthen our voices, To give us the courage to speak out strongly In this shameful historical moment When children are pawns And your commandment to love the neighbor, Your challenge to welcome the stranger Are so easily dismissed by those who use your name. Christ, we ask you to ground us in your inclusive love, So we may stand firmly against the abusive actions That tear families apart and warehouse children Sick with fear and longing in a hostile land. May we speak out and stand up to end the suffering Of your beloved little ones, so they may once again Know the embrace that is their sacred birthright. Amen. Rachel s Corner.Hope and Healing After Abortion I feel so much more peace inside and the weight of pain that I had is less, much less.
