UNIT 33 Session 3 Use Week of: The Fruit of the Spirit BIBLE PASSAGE: Galatians 5:16-26 MAIN POINT: The Holy Spirit helps us be more like Jesus. KEY PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 5:17 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Who changes us? God changes us to be like Jesus. 3 INTRODUCE THE STORY (15 20 MINUTES) PAGE 122 TEACH THE STORY (10 15 MINUTES) PAGE 124 EXPERIENCE THE STORY (20 25 MINUTES) PAGE 126 Leader BIBLE STUDY When we trust in Jesus, we become children of God and the gospel changes us. Our thinking changes so we can understand what pleases God and know His will. But gospel transformation doesn t stop there. The gospel also changes how we live each day. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul described the fruit of the flesh what a person s life looks like apart from Christ: anger, jealousy, selfishness, impurity, strife, and similar things. Paul shared that people who live like this will not enter God s kingdom because this behavior reveals the condition of the person s heart. These behaviors are the fruit of that person s sinful heart. 118 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 33 Session 3

Then Paul told the believers in the Galatian church how to recognize that God is working in someone s life. He contrasted the fruit of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit what a person s life looks like in Christ: love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol. This is the fruit produced in a person whose heart is changed by Christ. As you share the fruit of the Spirit with your preschoolers this week, be careful to help them see that this fruit is produced by the Holy Spirit working in them. It is not called the fruit of the Christian. Our response to the fruit of the Spirit should not be to think of ways we can be more loving, joyful, peaceful, or kind. That is mistakenly believing the fruit is produced by us! When we trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit begins to change us. 3 Our response should be how we can allow the Holy Spirit to change us to become a person who is more loving, joyful, peaceful, and kind. People who are saved by Jesus become more like Him, and the Holy Spirit gives them power to say no to sin and to live in a way that pleases God. The fruit of the Spirit reflects true gospel transformation. Additional resources for each session are available at gospelproject.com. The BIBLE STORY Bible Storytelling Tips Tell the story outside: Take a walk outdoors, weather permitting, to sit under a tree. Talk about different types of fruit and different types of trees. Tell the Bible story while outdoors. Pretend to pick fruit from a tree as boys and girls walk to/ from class. Use a flannel board: Cut out a tree trunk with branches from paper. Use hookand-loop fasteners to attach it to the board. Cut out nine copies of a simple fruit shape. Label each with one of the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit. Begin to tell the Bible story. As you describe each quality of the fruit of the Spirit, attach the appropriate fruit cutout to the tree s branches. The Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:16-26 Paul wrote a letter to the Christians in Galatia. Paul said that God changes people who trust in Jesus. God gives the Holy Spirit to people who believe in Jesus. The Holy Spirit guides them and gives them power to be more like Jesus. The Holy Spirit changes how we think and act. He guides us to do what God wants. Without Jesus, sin controls us. We do wrong things. We fight and get into trouble. Sinners who have not trusted in Jesus cannot be part of God s kingdom. But when we trust in Jesus, He frees us from the power of sin. Sin no longer controls us. The Holy Spirit controls us. He lives in us and gives us power to do what is right. When the Holy Spirit is in control, people have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When we show these actions, God is pleased. These things are called the fruit of the Spirit. We know someone loves God if he or she shows the fruit of the Spirit. A healthy tree grows fruit, and a healthy believer shows the fruit of the Spirit. Living this way is not easy, but the Holy Spirit helps us become more like Jesus every day. He gives us power to say no to things that are wrong and live in a way that pleases God. The Holy Spirit helps us feel joy and peace even when sad things happen. He gives us patience and helps us treat others with kindness and gentleness. He helps us control our thoughts, actions, and words. The more we know God, the more the Holy Spirit changes us to be like Jesus. 120 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 33 Session 3

Christ Connection: When we trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit starts to change us. Paul told believers how the Holy Spirit helps. Introduce THE STORY SESSION TITLE: The Fruit of the Spirit BIBLE PASSAGE: Galatians 5:16-26 MAIN POINT: The Holy Spirit helps us be more like Jesus. KEY PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 5:17 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Who changes us? God changes us to be like Jesus. From the Inside Out song offering basket Allergy Alert download favorite toys related to the Bible story theme Hidden Picture activity page, 1 per child pencils or crayons LOW PREP paper marker construction paper scissors (adult use) glue sticks labels (optional) Welcome time Play the unit theme song in the background as you greet preschoolers and follow your church s security procedures. Set an offering basket near the door to collect at an appropriate time. Post an allergy alert, if necessary. Set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. Activity page Invite preschoolers to use the key to find and circle the hidden items in the picture. SAY Today s Bible story is about the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit does not grow on a fruit tree. You cannot touch or eat the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is attitudes and actions that grow and show in someone who follows Jesus. The Holy Spirit makes the fruit of the Spirit grow in us. Glue nine squares Draw lines to create a three-by-three grid to fill a sheet of paper for each preschooler. Before the session, cut construction paper into squares that will fit inside the squares of the grid. Invite preschoolers to choose nine construction paper squares and glue one in each square on their paper. As children finish their artwork, write one 122 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 33 Session 3

characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit on each square (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control). Say each characteristic as you write it. Consider printing the characteristics on labels before the session to allow preschoolers to label the squares themselves. SAY We will learn about the fruit of the Spirit in today s Bible story. There are nine characteristics to the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The fruit of the Spirit is attitudes and actions that grow and show in the life of a believer. Play Fruit Basket Turnover Gather children in a circle with a chair for each child. Give each child a fruit sticker. Determine how many different fruit stickers to use based on the size and ability of your group. Explain to children that when you call out the fruit on their sticker, they must get up and find an empty chair. Children must wait until you call out their fruit before they move. If you call out fruit basket turnover, everyone must get up and find a new chair. Play as time allows. SAY Today s Bible story is about fruit, but not [Name the fruits represented on the stickers.] The fruit of the Spirit is attitudes and actions that grow and show in someone who knows and follows Jesus. Transition to teach the story To gain the attention of all the preschoolers to move them to Bible study, show the countdown video, flip off the lights, or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Call out fruits. If children have eaten that fruit, they may move to the Bible story area. fruit stickers countdown video (optional) The God Who Changes Us 123

KEY PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 5:17 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Who changes us? God changes us to be like Jesus. Allergy Alert download fruits Bible bookmark The Fruit of the Spirit video (optional) Bible Story Picture Poster Main Point Poster Giant Timeline or Big Story Circle Introduce the Bible story Pass around several fruits for preschoolers to feel and smell. SAY We will hear a lot about fruit today, but the fruit we are talking about is not fruit that grows on a tree or fruit that you eat. Fruit is a word that Paul used to describe attitudes and actions that grow and show in the life of a believer. Watch or tell the Bible story Place a bookmark at Galatians 5 in your Bible. Invite a preschooler to open it. Reverently display the open Bible. SAY Is there any book more important than the Bible? No, the Bible is the only book that has God s words in it, and God s words are true. Today s Bible story is from the Book of Galatians in the New Testament. Show the video or tell the Bible story using the provided storytelling helps. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers. Talk about the Bible story SAY We are sinners. We do wrong things. But when we trust in Jesus, God gives us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us be more like Jesus. The Holy 124 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 33 Session 3

Spirit changes our hearts to make us want to think about and do the things that please God. Point to the Bible story picture on the giant timeline or big story circle as you ask the following review questions: 1. What controls us before we trust in Jesus? (sin) 2. When Jesus frees us from the power of sin, who controls us? (the Holy Spirit) 3. What do we call love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? (the fruit of the Spirit) 4. Who makes the fruit of the Spirit grow and show in believers? (the Holy Spirit) Learn the big picture question SAY Our big picture question asks, Who changes us? God changes us to be like Jesus. The Holy Spirit starts to change us when we trust in Jesus. Paul told believers how the Holy Spirit helps. The Holy Spirit gives us power to say no to things that are wrong and live in a way that pleases God. Practice the key passage Open your Bible to 2 Corinthians 5:17. Read the key passage aloud several times. Sing together the key passage song, A New Creation. SAY Our key passage tells us that we are a new creation if we are in Christ. Being in Christ means that we have turned from our sin and trusted in Jesus to rescue us. Sin does not have power over us anymore. The Holy Spirit changes us to love God and want to obey Him. Use a walking rope for younger preschoolers. Point out trees that look healthier than others. Allow preschoolers to gather nature items to examine when you return to the room. SAY A healthy tree grows fruit, and a healthy believer shows the fruit of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us be more like Jesus and show the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit changes our hearts to help us love God and want to obey Him. Make a fruit salad Cover a table with a plastic tablecloth. Make sure each preschooler washes his or her hands. Allow preschoolers to feel and smell the uncut fruit. Invite preschoolers to help prepare the fruit. A preschooler may peel a banana or tangerine. He may use a plastic knife to slice bananas, grapes, strawberries, and pineapple chunks. He may use a spoon to scoop the seeds out of a papaya. Place all the cut fruit in large mixing bowl. Guide preschoolers to take turns stirring the fruit salad. Serve the fruit salad in foam bowls. Comment on specific ways the preschoolers show attitudes and actions like the fruit of the Spirit as they work together. SAY You all showed attitudes and actions like the fruit of 126 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 33 Session 3

the Spirit as you worked together. When the Holy Spirit is in control, people have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When we show these actions, God is pleased. When we trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit makes the fruit of the Spirit grow in us. The Holy Spirit helps us be more like Jesus. Put fruit on a tree Use large sheets of brown and green paper to create a tree. Attach the tree to a wall so the leaves are at preschoolers height. Cut circles from construction paper to serve as fruit. Place a piece of tape on the back of each fruit and invite preschoolers to cover the tree with fruit. SAY What would you think if you saw a farmer taping apples to his apple tree? You would think he was silly, wouldn t you? Well, if we try to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control with our own power, we are being silly, too. We cannot make the fruit of the Spirit grow in our lives. Only the Holy Spirit can do that. The Holy Spirit helps us be more like Jesus. When we trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit changes us so we can show the fruit of the Spirit. Examine controllers Gather an assortment of non-functioning devices that control things, such as a remote control for a television or toy, video game controller, electronic device with a volume knob or button, computer mouse, or computer keyboard. Be sure to remove any loose parts that could pose a safety hazard. When you used the controller, you could control what was happening on the screen. [Adjust dialogue to fit your items.] Without Jesus, sin controls us. We do wrong things. Sprout seeds Give each preschooler a paper towel. Help children spray their paper towels with water. The towel should be fairly wet but not dripping. Guide a preschooler to slip his paper towel into a ziplock bag and place a seed between the paper towel and the bag. Seal the bag. Use a permanent marker to write his name on the ziplock bag. Help a preschooler tape his ziplock bag to a sunny window. You may choose to send the seeds home or leave them in the classroom. SAY We are sprouting bean seeds. That means that this plant will grow into a bean plant, not a tomato plant or a strawberry plant. The only One who can make the fruit of the Spirit grow and show in us is the Holy Spirit.
