The Cotton States Exposton brought thousands of vstors to the young cty. On January 31 of that year the 27th Annual Conventon of the Amercan Womens Suffrage Assocaton was held wth Mss Susan B. Anthony as speaker. On August 9 the Broad Street vaduct was completed. Yet a stll more sgnfcant event was to take place that would cast ts nfluence on the thrvng metropols for many years to come. On September 1 1895 Dr. Davd Marx arrved n Atlanta to become rabb of the growng Hebrew Benevolent Congregaton. Steppng from the tran at the old Unon Staton the 23 year old mnster fell n love wth the bustlng cty that had called hm from hs rabbnate at Temple Emanuel n Brmngham Ala. Somehow the youthful clergyman felt at once that hs destny was nter-woven wth the fate of ths brave communty that only a few years before had rsen from the ashes of the cvl war. The young rabb was gven a warm and hearty welcome by the members of hs new congregaton and ther Chrstan neghbors. He mmedately set out on hs dutes and hs nfluence for good was soon felt not only among hs own consttutents but throughout the entre cty. From the very begnnng hs nterests and devoton transcended the boundares of hs congregaton and encompassed every worthwhle undertakng n the communty. Wthn a short tme Atlanta had come to know and love Dr. Davd Marx and as the years passed ths affecton and esteem was to grow and deepen. The Hebrew Benevolent Temple was located then at the corner of Garnett and Forsyth Streets n a towerng structure bult n 1875. Prevous to that tme the congregaton whch was formed n 1867 had conducted ts relgous servces n rented halls and prvate homes. Cuba Famly Archves

use we 4 When Dr. Marx became ts sprtual leader the Temple congrega ton numbered about ffty members. The populaton of Atlanta con tnued to ncrease however and the congregaton soon outgrew ts quarters. Under Dr. Marxs leadershp plans were made for a new buldng and by 1900 a suffcent sum had been rased to secure optons on sutable stes. A plot of land at the comer of Pryor and Rchardson Streets was selected and constructon began mmedately. On Frday evenng September 12 1902 the mpressve new Temple was dedcated before a large and dstngushed gatherng that flled the edfce to overflowng. Hundreds unable to gan admttance wated reverently outsde. The new buldng provded ample oppor tunty for the congregatons steady growth and expanson. Specal quarters were provded for the relgous school whch Dr. Marx had fostered and developed. n the meantme on October 15 1901 the popular young relgous leader had marred Mss Eleanor Rosenfeld daughter of Abraham and Emly Rosenfeld poneer settlers n ths cty and on January 29 1903 ther son Davd was born. Dr. Marx contnued n ever ncreasng measure to devote hs treless energes to the mprovement of hs congregaton and the betterment of manknd. Under hs nspred drecton the Temple gradually assumed a poston of leadershp among southern Jewry and Dr. Marxs repu taton and scope of nfluence constantly wdened.
