Welcome! In this summer s worship series, Alive, we ll explore the work of the Holy Spirit. Understanding the Holy Spirit (also known as Spirit of God, Holy Ghost, Breath of God, Paraclete, and a bunch more) is essential to understanding God s work and will. God; in communion with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and people like us; has made a new spiritual community where all people are welcome. Welcome to the Kingdom of God! God desires us to love God, love our neighbor, and love ourselves. We all quietly struggle with loving and caring for ourselves, and we need the Spirit to speak into our tired hearts. Parents, you can find canvas activity bags for your children in the back of the sanctuary. For infants up through age three, the nursery is available. Thank you for joining us today. We welcome you! You are also invited to take an Announcements sheet here at Easter, or visit easter.org for events & activities (Announcement sheets are posted weekly under Events & News). Spirit of God: Loving Self July 8, 2018 8:30 & 10 a.m. This summer, the June and August worship services will feature a setting written by Ben Kornelis. If you d like to become familiar with the music, go to easter.org (Sermons) and click on the green button. During July, we will be using Marty Haugen s Now the Feast and Celebration setting. This worship series is based upon the book We make the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren. Prelude: Canon in D - Johann Pachelbel Greetings and Announcements Easter Lutheran Church to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ Gathering Confession and Forgiveness Pastor: Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide Congregation: Our brokenness is too deep to undo by ourselves. We seek your grace. Maria Cecka-Daly, harp P: We have hurt others and we have been hurt. C: We have taken others for granted, and we have been taken for granted. P: Set us free from a past that we cannot change. C: Open to us a future in which we can be changed. As Jesus did, we welcome children of all ages as integral members of the body of Christ, and we welcome the sounds and activity that accompany them! Thank you Parents/Grandparents for bringing your children to worship! P: God of love, send your spirit to this place. C: Send your spirit to us, that we might grow more and more to be like you, through Jesus Christ who is the light of the world. P: Whatever is wrong, God forgives. Whatever is broken, God heals and completes. God loves and forgives you. C: We are free to forgive and love others. Amen.

The Sharing of the Peace is a way of demonstrating hospitality and grace with others. Please understand if some people choose not to shake hands while sharing the Peace for health reasons, but simply greet you with a smile. Sharing of the Peace Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. Congregation: And also with you. Gathering Hymn: All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly Hymnal #461 The Holy Spirit gathers us in unity on the first day of the week, the day of Christ s resurrection 2 Greeting: Leader: Congregation: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Fill the holes in our lives that we so frantically hide. Teach us to live in harmony with ourselves, so that together we can rejoice in you. Help us to let love be genuine because we want to be fully alive with you, Amen. 3

Anthem: Love Never Failsl Redford Kathryn Clements, vocalist Marilyn Bader, piano, Maren Wallenburg, flute If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, And if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind, Love leaves envy far behind. Never boastful, proud or rude, Love rejoices with the truth. Slow to anger, stores no wrongs, Love will never seek its own. Love does not delight in sin, it bears all things, believes all things, Love hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song Prophecies some day will cease, as for tongues they will be stilled. Knowledge, it will pass away, yet love remains, it hopes all things, believes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. - 1 Corinthians 13:1-8, adap. J.A.C. Redford Word Children s Message 4 Lesson: Romans 12: 3-21 (NRSV) For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. No, if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation: Marty Haugen, 1990, GIA Publications, Inc., All rights reserved. ONE LICENSE, License #A-727213 Lesson: Matthew 22: 34-40 (NRSV) When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. L: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Pastor Brandon Newton 5

Hymn of the Day: Loving Spirit Hymnal #397 Father is a specific and accessible image of God that Jesus gave us. Jesus did not limit God to this image. References to God as Creator, Parent, Mother, Counselor can be equally as helpful and valid. Another translation of catholic church is church universal Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Baptism (10:00) Camden Matthew Wold, son of Jacob & Angela Wold. His sponsors are Bethany Kinsella and Matt Lundeen. P: Let us speak together words of welcome to our new brother in Christ. C: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ! 6

Prayers of Intercession Each prayer petition will conclude: Pastor: Lord, in your mercy, Congregation: Hear our prayer. The offering is an act of worship. We give ourselves, our time and resources as a symbol of our love and appreciation for God s grace, and our investment in God s work through this church. Meal Offering of Gifts Offering Hymn: Hymn Medly Maria Ceck-Daly, harp Presentation: Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Hymnal #885 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heav nly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. We hope you enjoy this new way to share your generosity, and thank you for supporting the ministries of Easter Lutheran Church. Offering Prayer God of life, be here now warming our hearts. You, who dwells in the wind; you, who breathes just like us; remind us to share. Inspire us to live fully. Remind us that we live within the breath of your Spirit. We thank you for your love and grace which sustains us every day. In your living name we pray, Amen. The Great Thanksgiving Marty Haugen, 1990, GIA Publications, Inc., All rights reserved. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy Marty Haugen, 1990, GIA Publications, Inc., All rights reserved. ONE LICENSE, License #A-727213 Words of Institution Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 8

Distribution Lamb of God All are invited to receive these gifts of God. Children are welcome to come forward for a blessing. Children who have received instruction are welcome to commune. Communion today is by intinction - the dipping of the wafer in the wine. Please come to one of the stations, as directed. Marty Haugen, 1990, GIA Publications, Inc., All rights reserved. Break Now the Bread of Life Hymnal #515 Prayer after Communion Blessing Sending Dismissal Postlude: Choose to Hope - Marty Haugen Dawn Whittenburg, piano Hope is born when we choose to believe that love is stronger than hatred; Love is born when our hearts learn to see that every person is sacred. In the times of darkness, in times of fear, Choose to hope, choose to love, and know that God is near. Hope will grow when we choose to believe that we are sisters and brothers; Love will grow when our hearts learn to see the life we share with each other. In the times of darkness, in times of fear, Choose to hope, choose to love, and know that God is near. Hope will shine when we choose to believe a little child will lead us; Love will shine when our hearts learn to see that God is dwelling within us. In the times of darkness, in times of fear, Choose to hope, choose to love, Emmanuel is near. 10
