You ve Got Mail! A Series of Messages Based On the Le9ers to the Seven Churches Of Revela@on Revela&on 3:1-3 (NIV) The revela)on from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who tes)fies to everything he saw that is, the word of God and the tes)mony of Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is wrieen in it, because the )me is near. The Sender: Jesus Christ The revela)on of Jesus Christ (1:1) The Purpose: To show to his servants the things that must soon take place. (1:1) 1

The Scribe: John He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John (1:1) The Desired Outcome: Obedience Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is wrieen in it, for the )me is near. (1:3) The Situa&on: Persecu&on & Perseverance I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and pa)ent endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the tes)mony of Jesus. Revela&on 1:9-11 (NIV) 2

The Situa&on: Persecu&on & Perseverance 10 On the Lord s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which said: Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thya)ra, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. Revela&on 1:9-11 (NIV) I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 3

16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double- edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. 19 Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: 4

The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. John s Response: Worship When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead Revela&on 1:17 (NIV) Cp. Ma=hew 17:1-2 Voice like a trumpet (1:10) Like the Son of Man (1:13) cp. Daniel 7:9-13 Robe to His feet (1:13) Golden sash around His chest (1:13) 5

Hebrews 2:17-18 (NIV) For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Hair as white as wool/snow (1:14) Eyes like blazing fire (1:14) Feet like bronze (1:15) Voice like rushing water (1:15) First and Last (1:16) The Living One (1:17) Was Dead Alive for ever and ever (1:18) Holds the keys to death/hades (1:18) 6

He stands among the seven lampstands and holds the seven stars (1:13-14) Lampstands of gold (1:13) Lampstands = seven churches (1:19) Stars = Angels (1:19) Messengers/Pastors He stands among the seven lampstands (1:13-14) Out of His mouth a Double Edged Sword (1:16) Face bright as the sun (1:16) Our Response He is the Sovereign God and is worthy of our worship. Love His Church and be commi=ed to her. 7
