He asked where hs wfe was and Zelez told hm she was stll abed. Wth a commonplace remark that dd not arouse, Zelez's suspcons, the man went nto the house. Two shots, n quck successon, aroused the famly. James and Martn, twenty-one and sxteen respectvely, leaped from bed and r»n to ther aunt's bed room. They met Szta comng out. "Look out", he yelled at them, "'m sootng 'vpryone ths mornng." He walked quckly past them and strode down the road toward Port Readng. Tum Gun On Self James jumped nto hs father's car. Travelng carnvals, looke at from any angle, are a blght and a nusance to any commu nty unfortunate enough to attract them and from a dolla and cent vewpont are poor payng benefts for the local organzatons supposed to be the benefcares. Boled down to ts essence, a travelng carnval s nothng more than a set of gamblng devces arranged for the purpose of relevng the "sucker" of hs money as quckly! and panlessly as possble. They skm the cream of rea'dy cash and move on to another town wth the "suckers' " hard earned dollars n ther pockets. But even whle the Carteret protest was beng read at our Commttee meetng there came word that just such a carnval as spoken aganst was settng up ts booths for a stay n Carteret. Ths n spte of a rulng by the Borough Councl to prohbt such a thng. The fear on the part of poltcans that votes may be lost by refusng a local organzaton's request to be allowed to brng a travelng show to town s what kerps most tow.ftdm adoptng measures aganst these abuses. n places where the offce holders have braved the dspleasures of poltcal reprsal the result has been gratfyng. Woodbrdge and Carteret should follow the example of progressve communtes that have fxed fees for travelng show permts so hgh that they are safe aganst ther vstatons. BRD'S PLAN GOOD BUT T WOULD NOT QUELL THE POLTCAL BOSSES Belevng our prmary system of selectng canddates for publc offce s largely a falure because f lmts the people's.choce to one or two men put before themjby the bosses of the two major poltcal machnes and n that way elmnates possble canddates of outstandng capabltes, J. Phlp Brd, presdent of Manufacturers' Assooaton of New Jersey, has publshed a leaflet contanng a plan whch he beleves would elmnate much of the expense of securng nomnaton and gve the people a more drect voce n selectng ther standard bearers. -.-. s,..h Brefly, Brd's plan s to have each muncpalty n the (State elect a Nomnator for efrch party at each November electon. At some subsequent tme these Nomnators would meet, n party conventons and select a slate of Senate, Assembly and other canddates to represent the party at the next electon, clams that Nomnators, thus elected, would be "more ftted by temperament, poston, and ablty to select men for the great offces for whch they are nomnated." rv, "The cause of the drect prmary," Brd remarks, "was ',tbe msuse by ndvduals of the prvlege of selecton and the, manfest nfluence of the party poltcal boss. n an effort jtjto destroy ths boss control the drect prmary was adopted, fnd whle ts theory was supportable ts operaton s damn- able." Brd'f Plan has mert but n the fnal analyss the chances are that n actual operaton t would be brought as much under rthe nfluence of the party bosses as the present ms-used and ms-named drect prmary. The pont s, who would nomnate,th,e Nomnators except the local poltcal bosses? But that possblty, does not condemn Brd's proposal as J.'tsllBeless. n fact, f the voters could be educated up to the pont of turnng out a hundred per cent, vote or nearly that the present malgnant nfluence of the "controlled" vote would be done away wth. Then, wth such a plan as.brd's n force, the people as well as canddates would be saved the expense of? conductng a prmary electon. n other word^s, whle we be- Brd's plan would be economcal n that t provdes for»ne annual electon nstead of two, we are convnced the only of gettng out from under the thumb of the poltcal bosses n jarrng our bg group of non-votng ctzens nto a realthut ther alackersm A Phladelpha traffc cop arrested a college professor for Hyng to dspute wth hm where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaraton of ndependence. NEVER before have there been so many charmng women. WHEREVER.you go, you fnd them. Vvacous, happy, beautful, delghtfully dressed n the most exquste taste. CLEAR, pnk-and-whte complexon, luxurous, well-kept har, gleamng teeth, trm athletc carrage these are almost unversal, characterstcs of Amercan women of today. WHY? AT frst thought t may sound absurd, but one of the most powerful teachers has been advertsng. ADVERTSNG has helped to teach us all that the real bass of beauty s health and cleanlness. We are the greatest users of soap and water n the world. ADVERTSNG has taught us how to care for our teeth, our har, our feet, our hands and our complexons. ONE reason why so many women are charmng s because so many women are readng advertsng. From advertsng they are learnng the secrets of great beauty specalsts. Ths new spcton, contanng several hundred lots, wll be known as the "Baneball Serton." Lke the frst secton,lt slopes gently toward he lake, gvng t excellent dranage and makng t dry and healthful. Accordng to A. J. Hess, presdent of Whte & Hess, the buyng of akeshort lots at the summer colony club has exceeded anles volume at any New Jersey development placed on the market ths Bummer. "Rumors that we would open an addtonal secton adjonng the orgnal Branerd Lake Park ste," sad Mr. Hess, "has resulted n hundred or more phone calls to th and our New York offce, askng us to reserve lakefront or corner lots, n all cases we were forced to declne, snce not a sngle lot wll be sold before one o'clock on Saturday afternoon, July 23rd. So far as the baseball secton to be placed on the market tomorrow ts concerned, we expect the demand to be, even arg*r than for the orgnal secton, snce a great deal of favorable publcty n the New York and New Jersey press, and a wdespread advertsng campagn n both states have thoroughly famlarsed the publc wth the amaxng realty.value whch we are offerng them. t wll be mperatve, therefore, for all who wsh to have a wde range of choce, o be on hand at the openng ether Saturday or Sunday. t has been our experence that the most satsfactory results at Branerd Lake have been obtaned by.gettng purchasers to nterest ther l%est frends to buy lots alongsde of ther own. n ths manner they are nured pleasant, congenal n«gh 'bors of ther own choosng.
