Psalm 46:10 Busy is new popular. We have a love/hate relationship with being busy. We chafe against confines of our overloaded schedules. We think of friends we would love to get toger with, but n we sigh after we check our calendars. We could probably squeeze m in next month. At same time, if we re not as frenetically busy as we think we should be, we can begin to feel lazy ashamed. If we reduce our pace at all, surely that would mean we are tumbling towards lives of sloth. The voice within often prevents us from slowing down. In addition, many of us secretly fear that if we took our foot off accelerator at all, our lives would simply spin out of control. So, we find ourselves trapped. We hate being so busy, but we don t have freedom to do anything about it. In this predicament we find ourselves in, Sabbath is God s great gift to us. It is an invitation more accurately, it is a comm from God to stop. In fact, word Sabbath actually means to stop. On Sabbath, we stop, exhale, celebrate, receive new life from God. This weekly rest is to become a foundational satisfying rhythm for our lives. But, Sabbath is significantly more than a useful weekly practice that enables us to get some muchneeded rest. The Sabbath is an invitation for us enter into God s rest. It is an opportunity for us to rejoice in receive what God has done for us both in creation in salvation. In or words, Sabbath is both a practice that shapes our weekly rhythms a vital disposition of our hearts. Sabbath is a gracefilled Christcentered way of being in world. Let us worship!

FOR REFLECTION Most of us seem to labor for sake of things of space. As a result we suffer from a deeply rooted dread of time st aghast when compelled to look into its face. Time to us is sarcasm, a slick treacherous monster with a jaw like a furnace incinerating every moment of our lives. Shrinking, refore, from facing time, we escape for shelter to things of space. The intentions we are unable to carry out we deposit in space; possessions become symbols of our repressions, jubilees of frustrations. But things of space are not fireproof; y only add fuel to flames. Is joy of possession an antidote to terror of time which grows to be a dread of inevitable death? Things, when magnified, are forgeries of happiness, y are a threat to our very lives; we are more harassed than supported by Frankensteins of spatial things. Unless orwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Stard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. All rights reserved. It is impossible for man to shirk problem of time. The more we think more we realize: we cannot conquer time through space. We can only master time in time. Abraham Joshua Heschel, The Sabbath The principle underlying Sabbath is formulated in [Ten Commments]. It consists in this, that man must copy God in course of his life. The divine work of creation was created in six days, whereupon seventh followed as a day of rest for God. In connection with God, 'rest' cannot, of course, mean mere cessation from labor, far less recovery from fatigue... 'Rest' resembles word 'peace' in this respect, that it has in Scripture, in fact to [Jewish] mind generally, a positive rar than a negative import. It sts for consummation of a work accomplished joy satisfaction attendant upon this. Geerhardus Vos, Biblical Theology Whenever you get to win, you feel satisfaction of all of your hard work, all sacrifices, all blood, sweat tears. It feels right makes you realize that you are really doing right thing. Abby Wambach You see, a hammer finds a nail And a freight train needs rail And I'm doin' what I'm on this earth to do And I don't think on why I'm here or where it hurts I'm just lucky to have work Sunday morning I'm too tired to go to church But I thank God for work Jason Isbell, Something More than Free

FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY CALL TO WORSHIP Sting Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders. Psalm 19:16, 14 The heavens declare glory of God, sky above proclaims his hiwork. Day to day pours out speech, night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are re words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all earth, ir words to end of world. In m he has set a tent for sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from end of heavens, its circuit to end of m, re is nothing hidden from its heat. Let words of my mouth meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock my redeemer. Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Henry J. van Dyke 1907, Ludwig van Beethoven 1824 Joyful, joyful, we adore e, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before e, opening to sun above. Melt clouds of sin sadness; drive dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with light of day! All thy works with joy surround e, earth heaven reflect thy rays, Stars angels sing around e, center of unbroken praise. Field forest, vale mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird flowing fountain call us to rejoice in e. Mortals, join happy chorus, which morning stars began; Far love is reigning o er us, bror love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward in triumph song of life. Seated 1

LECTIO SACRA Genesis 1:262:3 (NIV) Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; let m have dominion over fish of sea, over birds of air, over cattle, over all wild animals of earth, [b] over every creeping thing that creeps upon earth. So God created humankind in his image, in image of God he created m; male female he created m. God blessed m, God said to m, Be fruitful multiply, fill earth subdue it; have dominion over fish of sea over birds of air over every living thing that moves upon earth. God said, See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon face of all earth, every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have m for food. And to every beast of earth, to every bird of air, to everything that creeps on earth, everything that has breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, indeed, it was very good. And re was evening re was morning, sixth day. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Thus heavens earth were finished, all ir multitude. And on seventh day God finished work that he had done, he rested on seventh day from all work that he had done. So God blessed seventh day hallowed it, because on it God rested from all work that he had done in creation. The word of Lord! Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. 2

Sting CONFESSION OF SIN Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. Almighty God, in midst of unknown futures, deming jobs busy schedules, an uncertain economy, natural disasters, fractured families, failing health, broken relationships, we have chosen fear, anxiety, despondency, disobedience, anger, withdrawal instead of trusting you entering your rest. Forgive us remind us that because of your work in Jesus Christ, rest peace are now possible. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from John 10:10 On third day, Jesus resurrected from dead securing for God s people life life to full. In his life, we have forgiveness. In his life, we have life. We are forgiven. Go live in peace. Amen. May peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. 3

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 104:115, 35b Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Bless LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, you are very great! You are clod with splendor majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out heavens like a tent. He lays beams of his chambers on waters; he makes clouds his chariot; he rides on wings of wind; he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire. He set earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. You covered it with deep as with a garment; waters stood above mountains. At your rebuke y fled; at sound of your thunder y took to flight. The mountains rose, valleys sank down to place that you appointed for m. You set a boundary that y may not pass, so that y might not again cover earth. You make springs gush forth in valleys; y flow between hills; y give drink to every beast of field; wild donkeys quench ir thirst. Beside m birds of heavens dwell; y sing among branches. From your lofty abode you water mountains; earth is satisfied with fruit of your work. You cause grass to grow for livestock plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from earth wine to gladden heart of man, oil to make his face shine bread to strengn man's heart. Bless LORD, O my soul! Praise Lord! 5

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Apostles Creed The Apostles Creed is oldest summary of Christian beliefs. It has been used in some form since at least 3rd Century. Catholic refers to true Christian church at all times in all places. What is it that we, people of God, believe? We believe in God, Far Almighty, maker of heaven earth; in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by Holy Spirit, born of virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from dead. He ascended into heaven, is seated at right h of God Far Almighty. From re he will come to judge living dead. We believe in Holy Spirit, holy catholic church, communion of saints, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of body, life everlasting. Amen. 7

SERMON TEXT Genesis 1:262:3; Exodus 20:811 (NIV) [26] Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let m have dominion over fish of sea over birds of heavens over livestock over all earth over every creeping thing that creeps on earth. [27] So God created man in his own image, in image of God he created him; male female he created m. [28] And God blessed m. And God said to m, Be fruitful multiply fill earth subdue it, have dominion over fish of sea over birds of heavens over every living thing that moves on earth. [29] And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on face of all earth, every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have m for food. [30] And to every beast of earth to every bird of heavens to everything that creeps on earth, everything that has breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. [31] And God saw everything that he had made, behold, it was very good. And re was evening re was morning, sixth day. [1] Thus heavens earth were finished, all host of m. [2] And on seventh day God finished his work that he had done, he rested on seventh day from all his work that he had done. [3] So God blessed seventh day made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. [1] I am true vine, my Far is vinedresser. [2] Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. [3] Already you are clean because of word that I have spoken to you. [4] Abide in me, I in you. As branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in vine, neir can you, unless you abide in me. [5] I am vine; you are branches. Whoever abides in me I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. [6] If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch wirs; branches are gared, thrown into fire, burned. [7] If you abide in me, my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, it will be done for you. [8] By this my Far is glorified, that you bear much fruit so prove to be my disciples. [9] As Far has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. [10] If you keep my commments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Far's commments abide in his love. [11] These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, that your joy may be full. [8] Remember Sabbath day by keeping it holy. [9] Six days you shall labor do all your work, [10] but seventh day is a sabbath to Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neir you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. [11] For in six days Lord made heavens earth, sea, all that is in m, but he rested on seventh day. Therefore Lord blessed Sabbath day made it holy.
