Page 2 Epistle Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 THE THEOTOKIAN Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Gospel Reading: Saint Luke 16:19-31 Let us attend, The Lord said, There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man s table; moreover the dogs cmae and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he called out, Father Abraham, mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us. And he said, Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, let they also come into this place of torment. But Abraham said, They have Moses, and the prophets, let them hear them. And he saide, No father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repnet. He said tho them, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead. 2

THE THEOTOKIAN Page 3 By Stanley S. Harakas AUTOCEPHALOUS CHURCH Q: What prevents a group of disheartened people from declaring themselves autocephalous? A: One of the important marks of a canonical Church is that autocephaly is granted by the Mother Church and that of the Chief Hierarch of the Mother Church and the leaders of the other autocephalous churches grant formal recognition to the New Church. If this does not happen the newly proclaimed group will be characterized as schismatic (which means separated ) and will not be a canonical Orthodox Church. An example of these schismatic, unrecognized church groups are the Old Calendarists (Paleoemerologitai). BIBLE Q: The church and Holy Scripture. One is created for the other-could you please explain further? A: Your question is correctly points to the fact that the Bible and the church are never to be separated in our thinking. Those who seek to oppose the two are not only seeking to create an unwarranted disruption and disturbance, but also distort the truth. On the one hand, the New Testament is the product of the church itself not the other way around. The Apostles believed in preached, and spread the church before the New Testament books were written. Many thousands of Christians believed, were baptized, and shared in the sacramental life, obeyed God s laws and were martyred and died without ever having seen a New Testament as we know it today. It s last book was written about the year 100A.D. Further, it was the church itself which formally made the decision as to which books were to be included in the Old and New Testaments not the other way around (Canon 85 of the Apostolic Canons, 4th century; the 60th Canon of Laodicea, 4th century; and the 32nd Canon of Carthage). On the other hand, the Scripture as the written revelation of God is one of the chief sources of our faith, together with Holy Tradition, leading us to the truth who is God Himself in Trinity. A glance at the texts of the writings of the Holy Fathers will show that thy were immersed in Scriptures and that they read them with zeal and quoted the profusely from memory. To not only understand this relationship more fully, but to also learn how to read the Scriptures in the Orthodox spirit, read Fr. Theodore Stylianopoulos little book written for lay people, Bread for Life: Reading the Bible. 3

Page 4 THE THEOTOKIAN AN UNIMPRESSIBLE GENERATION When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater that Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something great than Jonah is here. (Lk 11:29-32) Why does Jesus call this generation evil? Because it remained unimpressed by Him, despite all the healings done by Him, and casting out of demons, and the feeding of the five thousand, etc. This generation was not moved, as was the Queen of the South (i.e., the Queen of Sheba, who, having heard about Solomon s fame, came to him with a list of deep questions in 1 Kings 10), to leave their ends of the earth in order to come and hear the Wisdom of God, Jesus Christ. Nor was this generation moved, by the Presence of Christ in its midst, to repentance (a change of mind or focus), as were the inhabitants of Nineveh, after they heard the preaching of Jonah (Jonah 3: 6-10). No, this generation demanded more of a sign from Christ, even while they had so much more than did the Queen of Sheba or the Ninevitans Today let me not be lie this generation.. Let me not give in to despondency, and lack responsiveness to the Presence of the Lord in my little life. Let me be moved to hustle-and-bustle of the Lord in my little life. Let me be moved to hustle-andbustle for the Lord, as was Martha; and also to sit at His feet for a while, ad did Mary (Lk 10:38-42). Because I can! Thank You, Lord, for giving us more than we could ever wish for, Yourself. Glory be to You. 4
