Spirital Notes: Amos, a prophet of the northern kingdom in the eighth centry, BC, speaks words of jdgment against those who trample pon the needy. He is one of the strongest prophets to denonce injstice. The people cold hardly wait for the holy days to be over, that we may sell or grain, and fix the weights and measres for cheating. Thogh Israel is waiting for the Day of the Lord, Amos tells them that it will be a day of jdgment and jstice, not a day of joy, for God will pnish them for their sins. The writer of First Timothy asks s to pray for everyone, for this is good and pleasing to God or savior, who will everyone to be saved. By praying for kings and for all in athority, we do God s will; when we pray for them, we cannot help bt think of them in a different light. The nderstanding in early Christianity was that they shold live as good citizens, and extension of rles for condct within a hosehold. As all people are children of God, we are nited as one family and so we shold live in all devotion and dignity. In a carefl reading of today s Gospel, we see that the dishonest steward was commended not for his dishonesty bt for acting prdently. The steward acts sensibly to secre his ftre. By lowering the amont each debtor owes his master, he gains favor with the debtors. In Jess' comments following the parable, we hear calling the disciples to have similar sense. The children of the world are more prdent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of the light (referring to the Christians). This parable addressed specifically to his disciples, teaches s that while we are citizens of heaven, we still have to deal with the realities of this world, and we shold do this with the good sense of the steward. For reflection: What is my attitde toward the poor? Do I spport a system that tramples on them or assists them? Save the Date Friday, November 9, 2018 Tenta Torciano Winery from San Gimignano, Italy, is retrning to Dover! More information to follow. We read in Sacred Scriptre that Or Lord Jess Christ, sent on earth for the salvation of the hman race, did not begin by teaching; He began by doing. And what He did was to integrate flly into His life every type of virte. He then went on to teach, by preaching the good news of salvation to poor people, and by passing on to His Apostles and disciples what they needed to know to become gides for others. ~SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL Monday, September 24 ~ Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Holy Gospel: Lke 8:16-18 Jess said to the crowd: No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it nder a bed; rather, he places it on a lamp stand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how yo hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away. Meditation: What do the images of light and a lamp tell s abot God's kingdom? Lamps in the ancient world served a vital fnction, mch like they do today. They enable people to see and work in the dark and to avoid stmbling. The Jews also nderstood "light" as an expression of the inner beaty, trth, and goodness of God. In his light we see light (Psalm 36:9). His word is a lamp that gides or steps (Psalm 119:105). God's grace not only illmines the darkness in or lives, bt it also fills s with spirital light, joy, and peace. Jess sed the image of a lamp to describe how his disciples are to live in the light of his trth and love. Jst as natral light illmines the darkness and enables one to see visally, so the light of Christ shines in the hearts of believers and enables s to see the heavenly reality of God's kingdom. In fact, or mission is to be light-bearers of Christ so that others may see the trth of the gospel and be freed from the blindness of sin and deception. Prayer: O God, who fonded all the commands of yor sacred Law pon love of yo and of or neighbor, grant that, by keeping yor precepts, we may merit to attain eternal life. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: Jess remarks that nothing can remain hidden or secret. We can try to hide things from others, from orselves, and from God. How tempting to sht or eyes from the conseqences of or sinfl ways and bad habits, even when we know what those conseqences are. And how tempting to hide them from others and even from God. Bt, nonetheless, everything is known to God who sees all. There is great freedom and joy for those who live in God's light and who seek his trth. Those who listen to God and heed his voice will receive more from him abndance of wisdom, gidance, peace, and blessing. Do yo know the joy and freedom of living in God's light? Tesday, September 25 ~ Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Holy Gospel: Lke 8:19-21 The mother of Jess and his brothers came to him bt were nable to join him becase of the crowd. He was told, Yor mother and yor brothers are standing otside and they wish to see yo. He said to them in reply, My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it. Meditation: Have yo given any thoght to the real meaning of what it means to be Christian? While being a Christian involves doctrine, precepts, and commandments, it is first and foremost a relationship a relationship with Christ bilt on trst, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithflness, kindness, thoghtflness, compassion, mercy, helpflness, encoragement, spport, strength, protection, and so many other qalities that bind people together in mtal love and nity. God offers s the greatest of relationships nion of heart, mind, and spirit with himself, the very athor and sorce of love (ref. 1 John 4:8,16). God's love never fails, never forgets, never compromises, never lies, never lets s down nor disappoints s. His love is consistent, nwavering, nconditional, and nstoppable. Nothing can deter him

from ever leaving s, ignoring s, or treating s nkindly. God wants all of or relationships to be rooted in his love. Jess is God's love incarnate God's love made visible in hman flesh (ref. 1 John 4:9-10). That is why Jess describes himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep and the shepherd who seeks ot the sheep who have strayed and lost their way. God is like the father who yearns for his prodigal son to retrn home and then throws a great party for his son when he has a change of heart and comes back (ref. Lke 15:11-32). Jess offered p his life on the cross for or sake, so that we cold be forgiven and restored to nity and friendship with God. It is throgh Jess that we become the adopted children of God his own sons and daghters. Amen. Contemplation: Ask yorself a very fndamental qestion: Who do yo love and cherish the most? God did not intend for s to be alone, bt to be with others. He gives s many opportnities for developing relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Why does Jess seem to ignore his own relatives when they pressed to see him? His love and respect for his mother and his relatives is nqestionable. Jess never lost an opportnity to teach his disciples a spirital lesson and trth abot the kingdom of God. On this occasion when many gathered to hear Jess he pointed to another higher reality of relationships, namely or relationship with God and with those who belong to God. Wednesday, September 26 ~ Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Saints Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs Holy Gospel: Lke 9:1-6 Jess smmoned the Twelve and gave them power and athority over all demons and to cre diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He said to them, Take nothing for the jorney, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tnic. Whatever hose yo enter, stay there and leave from there. And as for those who do not welcome yo, when yo leave that town, shake the dst from yor feet in testimony against them. Then they set ot and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and cring diseases everywhere. Meditation: Why does Jess tell the apostles to "travel light" with little or no provision? "Poverty of spirit" frees s from greed and preoccpation with possessions and makes ample room for God's provision. The Lord wants his disciples to be dependent on him and not on themselves. He wills to work throgh and in each of s for his glory. Are yo ready to handle the power and athority which God wishes yo to exercise on his behalf? The Lord entrsts s with his gifts and talents. Are yo eager to place yorself at his service, to do whatever he bids yo, and to witness his trth and saving power to whomever he sends yo? Prayer: May yo be magnified, O Lord, by the revered memory of yor Saints Cosmas and Damian, for with providence beyond words yo have conferred on them everlasting glory, and on s, yor nfailing help. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: When people se the phrase yo can t teach an old dog new tricks as a crtch to say that they do not have the ability or the capacity to change their lives, they are shortchanging themselves, the power of God, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the transformative words and teachings of Jess Christ. God's word has power to change and transform or lives. Do yo recognize the power and athority which God has entrsted to yo as his son or daghter? Jess gave his apostles both power and athority to speak and to act in his name to cast ot evil spirits, to heal, and to speak the word of God. When Jess spoke of power and athority he did something nheard of. He wedded power and athority with love and hmility. The world and the flesh seek power for selfish gain. Jess teaches s to se it for the good of or neighbor. Abot Saints Cosmas and Damian: This is one of the most ancient feasts of the Chrch, and these two martyrs have been honored in the East and West in many ways, inclding the bilding of chrches in their honor in Rome and Constantinople. Along with St. Lke, they are the patron saints of doctors. Sts. Cosmas and Damian were venerated in the East as the moneyless ones becase they practiced medicine gratis. According to the legend, they were twin brothers, born in Arabia, who stdied in Syria and became skilled physicians. They were spposed to have lived on the Bay of Alexandretta in Cilicia, in what is now Trkey. Since they were prominent Christians, they were among the first arrested when the great

persection nder Diocletian began. Lysias, the governor of Cilicia, ordered their arrest, and they were beheaded. Their bodies, it was said, were carried to Syria and bried at Cyrrhs. What is certain is that they were venerated very early and became patrons of medicine, known for their miracles of healing. The Emperor Jstinian was cred by their intercession and paid special honor to the city of Cyrrhs where their relics were enshrined. Their basilica in Rome, adorned with lovely mosaics, was dedicated in the year 530. They are named in the Roman Martyrology and in the Canon of the Mass, testifying to the antiqity of their feast day. Cosmas and Damian were not only ideal Christians by their practice of medicine withot fee, they also symbolized God's blessing pon the art of healing and that respect for every form of science, which is an important part of Christian tradition. Thrsday, September 27 ~ Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Vincent de Pal, Priest Holy Gospel: Lke 9:7-9 Herod the tetrarch heard abot all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed becase some were saying, John has been raised from the dead ; others were saying, Elijah has appeared ; still others, One of the ancient prophets has arisen. Bt Herod said, John I beheaded. Who then is this abot whom I hear sch things? And he kept trying to see him. Meditation: Who do yo most admire? People with important titles, power, inflence, fame or wealth? Scriptre warns s of sch danger (see Proverbs 23:1-2). King Herod had respected and feared John the Baptist as a great prophet and servant of God. John, however did not fear to rebke Herod for his adlteros affair with his brother's wife. Herod, however, was more of a people pleaser than a God pleaser. Herod not only imprisoned John to silence him, bt he also beheaded him simply to please his family and friends. Now when reports of Jess' miracles and teaching reach Herod's cort, Herod becomes very trobled in conscience. He thinks that John the Baptist has risen from the dead! Herod soght to meet Jess more ot of criosity and fear than ot of a sincere desire to know God's wisdom and trth. Prayer: O God, who for the relief of the poor and the formation of the clergy endowed the Priest Saint Vincent de Pal with apostolic virtes, grant, we pray, that, afire with that same spirit, we may love what he loved and pt into practice what he taght. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: Who is most inflential in yor life? And who do yo most want to be like? We natrally look p to other people we want to imitate. If we trly want to be like God and to live as his sons and daghters, then it greatly helps s to have models and examples of godly people who show s how to live in the power of God's love and holiness. God's grace frees s from the tyranny of fear and the pressre to please others rather than to please God. Do yo allow God's grace to fill yo with faith and corage to choose what is good and pleasing to him and to reject whatever wold keep yo from embracing his love and will for yor daily life? Abot Saint Vincent de Pal: St. Vincent de Pal was a great apostle of charity, and broght a great revival of the priesthood in the 17th centry. He was born near Dax in the Landes (France) in 1581. As a yong priest he was captred by Moorish pirates who carried him to Africa. He was sold into slavery, bt freed in 1607 when he converted his owner. Having retrned to France, he became sccessively a parish priest and chaplain to the galley-slaves. He fonded a religios Congregation nder the title of Priests of the Mission or Lazarists (now known as Vincentians), and he bond them by a special way to ndertake the apostolic work of charity; he sent them to preach missions, especially to the ignorant peasants of that time, and to establish seminaries. In order to help poor girls, invalids, and the insane, sick and nemployed, he and St. Loise de Marillac fonded the Congregation of the Daghters of Charity, now better known as the Sisters of St. Vincent. St. Vincent worked tirelessly to help those in need: the impoverished, the sick, the enslaved, the abandoned, the ignored. He died in 1660 at St. Lazars's hose, Paris. His motto: God sees yo. Friday, September 28 ~ Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Wenceslas, Martyr Holy Gospel: Lke 9:18-22 Once when Jess was praying in solitde, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, Who do the crowds say that I am? They said in reply, John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, One of the ancient prophets has arisen. Then he said to them, Bt who do yo say that I am? Peter said in reply, The Christ of God. He rebked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone. He said, The Son of Man mst sffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.

Meditation: Peter's faith was sorely tested when Jess explained that it was necessary for the Messiah to sffer and die in order that God's work of redemption might be accomplished. How startled the disciples were when they heard this word! How different are God's thoghts and ways from or thoghts and ways! Throgh hmiliation, sffering, and death on the cross Jess broke the powers of sin and death and won for s eternal life and freedom from the slavery of sin and from the oppression of or enemy, Satan, the father of lies and the deceiver of hmankind. If we want to share in Christ's victory, then we mst also take p or cross and follow him where he leads s. What is the "cross" that yo and I mst take p each day? When my will crosses with God's will, then his will mst be done. To know Jess Christ is to know the power of his victory on the cross and his resrrection. The Holy Spirit gives each of s the gifts and strength we need to live as sons and daghters of God. The Holy Spirit gives s faith to know the Lord Jess personally as or Redeemer, and the power to live the gospel faithflly, and the corage to witness to others the joy, trth, and freedom of the gospel. Who do yo say that Jess is? Prayer: O God, who taght the Martyr Saint Wenceslas to place the heavenly Kingdom before an earthly one, grant throgh his prayers that, denying orselves, we may hold fast to yo with all or heart. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: A fndamental, yet critical qestion for each one of s: Who is Jess for yo? Many in Israel recognized Jess as a mighty man of God, even comparing him with the greatest of the prophets. Peter, always qick to respond whenever Jess spoke, professed that Jess was trly the Christ of God. No mortal being cold have revealed this to Peter, bt only God. Throgh the eyes of faith Peter grasped who Jess trly was. He was the first apostle to pblicly recognize Jess as the Anointed One whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world as Lord and Savior (Lke 2:11, Acts 2:36). Christ is the Greek word for Messiah, the Hebrew word which is also translated as the Anointed One. Abot Saint Wenceslas: This Dke of Bohemia was born abot the year 907 at Prage, Bohemia (now the Czech Repblic). His father was killed in battle when he was yong, leaving the kingdom to be rled by his pagan mother. Wenceslas was edcated by his grandmother, Ldmilla, also a saint. She taght him to be a Christian and to be a good king. She was killed by pagan nobles before she saw him king, bt she left him with a deep commitment to the Christian faith. Throghot his life he preserved his virginity nblemished. As dke he was a father to his sbjects, generos toward orphans, widows, and the poor. On his own sholders he freqently carried wood to the hoses of the needy. He often attended the fnerals of the poor, ransomed captives, and visited those sffering in prison. He was filled with a deep reverence toward the clergy; with his own hands he sowed the wheat for making altar breads and pressed the grapes for the wine sed in the Mass. Dring winter he wold visit the chrches barefoot throgh snow and ice, freqently leaving behind bloody footprints. Wenceslas was eighteen years old when he scceeded his father to the throne. Withot regard for the opposition, he worked in close cooperation with the Chrch to convert his pagan contry. He ended the persection of Christians, bilt chrches and broght back exiled priests. As king he gave an example of a devot life and of great Christian charity, with his people calling him Good King of Bohemia. His brother Boleslas, however, trned to paganism. One day he invited Wenceslas to his hose for a banqet. The next morning, on September 28, 929, as Wenceslas was on the way to Mass, Boleslas strck him down at the door of the chrch. Before he died, Wenceslas forgave his brother and asked God's mercy for his sol. Althogh he was killed for political reasons, he is listed as a martyr since the dispte arose over his faith. This king, martyred at the age of twenty-two, is the national hero and patron of the Czech Repblic. He is the first Slav to be canonized.
