Proverbs 3:5-10 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing

When we are able to give 10% or more of our income instead of keeping that money for ourselves, it shows that our heart isn't tied to our money and that we (actually) love God more than our money. Cortni Marrazzo Is Tithing For The New Testament Believer?
God knows we are naturally inclined to be selfish and will want to keep our money. So while, yes, we should give cheerfully, sometimes we need to take the step and actually give regardless of our internal feelings. The act of giving allows God to change our hearts so that ultimately we end up doing so cheerfully. Many of us, if we let our natural minds decide how much to give, would likely opt for a lot less than 10%. Having a standard keeps us accountable. WHY do we give to God? - To acknowledge that all things belong to Him, - To free us from the mastery of money/mammon
WHAT do we give to God? - His tithe, 10% - Beyond the 10%, as freewill offerings of joy and generosity
HOW do we give to God? - Tithe to local church (cf. temple of God) - Freewill offerings through local church or other channels
Can I give directly to Christian organisations, and other worthy causes? - Yes, but not with the tithe. The tithe belongs to God, and we do not independently decide to channel it away from the local church. - If you feel strongly that our church should support certain Christian organisations or causes approach the pastors or church leaders.
I don't trust the leadership of this church to use my money well - You are giving to God, not to the leaders. You are accountable to God for the tithe, the leaders are accountable to God for how they steward His tithes - Unless there is clear evidence of mismanagement or corruption, we must have faith that God will lead our leaders. Pray for them!
Luke 16:13 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God s sight.

Tithing can also become an arbitrary goal you seek to achieve, and when you arrive at the tithing finish line you declare your race over. Now you can rest. Now you can put on your Pharisee clothes and be proud that you are not like those non-tithers. George Bullard

The tithe seemed so impossible. Yet, I thought about it. I prayed about it. I argued with God about it. I knew God was prompting me to give. So I did. I wrote my first tithe cheque and put it in the offering bag as it passed by. Nothing miraculous happened that day or the next or the next. I just kept giving. I actually felt good about it. I knew I was living in obedience. I knew I was doing what God called me to do. And most importantly, I learned that my giving was flowing from the love I had for my Heavenly Father and not because He needed my money. Single mother, Jennifer
