Thirty-Second in Ordinary Time Parish News Pastor s Notes UPDATING OUR FACILITIES SMALL GROUPS MINISTRY UPDATE Most of our Small Groups will begin meeting this week! We have groups meeting every day of the week mostly in members homes, with one group meeting during PSR at Holy Martyrs. Small Groups is one way to make our large church small and personal. Groups are excited to explore the topic of Prayer, since prayer is at the center of one s relationship with God. If you have questions about Small Groups Ministry or would like to become involved, please contact Nancy at nfiamingo@holymartyrs.net. Your prayers for this new ministry are appreciated. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20 Blood pressure screening is a service that is offered by our Wellness Ministry to parishioners the first of each month. We invite you to participate in the blood pressure screenings this from 10:30-11:30 am in the choir room. Little Rock Bible Study began a new study on November 1; Panorama of the Bible - Old Testament. Please join us on Tuesdays in Room 103 at 1:00 pm. Books will be available. No prior Bible Study is required. All are welcome. The Bake Sale Is Coming! Holy Martyrs will hold their Annual Advent Bake Sale on December 3 & 4. We are in need of homemade bake goods, nicely wrapped for this sale. Like to bake? Want to donate homemade bakery? Please watch for the electronic sign up link in your email or contact Melinda Zemba at 330-725-3264 if you are able to help with set up on Saturday, December 3 at 3:00 pm in the Gathering Area or after any of the Masses that weekend. Holy Martyrs is blessed to have some of the most beautiful facilities of any parish in our diocese. They are well-constructed and maintained. Keeping them in shape is the work of our parish Buildings and Grounds Committee and our very capable maintenance and cleaning staff. Behind the scenes, a lot of work goes into maintaining and updating our facilities. Most of this goes on unnoticed, but some you cannot miss. The latest project is, quite literally, right under your feet. The concrete entryway in front of the church s main entrance, that has weathered more than its share of harsh winters, is deteriorating and needs to be replaced. New technologies are allowing us to replace the old concrete with a more beautiful stone-finish surface. In addition to its aesthetic value, it will be stronger, more durable, and easier to maintain than the concrete slab it s replacing. It will serve us well into the future. This is another example of Grateful Giving in action. Grateful Giving reminds us that God has given us all that we have. In gratitude to God, we return a portion of our blessings to support our church. Our ability to maintain and improve our facilities is due entirely to the members of Holy Martyrs who give faithfully each week to provide for our parish s needs. It makes possible not only our buildings but all of our parish programs and ministries. An easy way to become part of this important work is through Electronic Giving. It makes giving easy, safe and convenient. Information on Electronic Giving is available at the Welcome Center at church or by contacting the parish office. God bless all of our faithful givers! Father Steve

Please prayerfully consider a generous contribution to this special triennial collection approved by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2012 and last taken in 2013. Join Us on the January El Salvador Mission Trip! Would you like to personally meet Jesus? Then come to El Salvador on our next mission trip in late January 2017. Yes, you will see HIM in the eyes and hearts of the Salvadoran people guaranteed! Take communion to the shut-ins, meet with school children and teachers at Immaculada Concepcion school, and hear first-hand from our scholarship students and Father Paul Schindler about the importance of our work there. November Friendship Meal You are invited to join in serving our neighbors in need on Saturday, November 12 th. We will cook the meal in the Holy Martyrs Gathering Area kitchen on Saturday morning and serve the meal at Sagrada Familia Parish in Cleveland the same afternoon. The event will conclude at approximately 6:00 pm. We are asking for food donations of turkey, stuffing ingredients, green beans, pies, milk, butter and other items such as Giant Eagle Gift cards (for bus passes). Please sign up for cooking, serving, or donating via Signup Genius which has been distributed in an email from the parish office. Please place perishable items in the refrigerator and mark all donations "Friendship Meal"! For additional information please call/text Nathan Klettlinger at 330-697-7879 or email nklettlinger@gmail.com Holy Land Carvings are back! Holy Land carvings have been popular at Holy Martyrs for many years. The sale of Holy Land carvings will take place on the weekend of November 26 & 27 in the Gathering Area. Bishop Lennon has designated Suhair Musleh as the official vendor of the Holy Land carvings. Because of the conflict in the region, many Christian families in Bethlehem are struggling to make ends meet. Holy Land Gifts represent over 100 Christian families who make a living selling traditional olive wood handcrafts and religious articles. When you purchase one of these beautiful gifts, you are helping artisans in the Holy Land provide for their families and live and work with dignity in a region fraught with tension. Thank you for supporting this project to keep the Christians present in the holy land of Jesus birth. November is National Adoption Month Mary Queen of Peace invites all to their Seventh Annual Mass for National Adoption Month on, November 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Birth parents, adoptive parents and adopted children will be recognized during Mass. Guest homilist will be Deacon Jim Armstrong, Executive Communications Director for the Diocese of Cleveland and Deacon at St. Bridget of Kildare in Parma. Mary Queen of Peace is located at 4423 Pearl Rd., Cleveland. Please contact Mary Queen of Peace at 216-749-2323 or info@maryqop.org for more information.

Thirty-Second in Ordinary Time Parish School of Religion - 330-952-1466 SAINTS Wax Museum will visit Holy Martyrs Church on Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th 6:30-7:20 p.m. in the Gathering Area. Join our 4th graders for coffee/tea to support and encourage our 4th grade students as they present the lives of the saints in costume. This is an important event in the life of our Church because the saints provide us with a true and realistic look at ordinary people who have lived lives in ordinary and sometimes horrific life situations and have given their life to Christ. Vote for your favorite Turkey Run Box All PSR parents are invited and encouraged to vote on November 7 or 8 for your favorite Turkey Run Box between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Life Center second floor. Little Philosophers Our children are born with a capacity for spiritual knowledge just as they are born with a capacity for math, science, language arts, etc. Rather than leave this capacity to drop by the wayside due to neglect, we can instead support their natural spirituality. One of the ways to do this is by talking with our children about life s BIG QUESTIONS- the kind that sometimes make us nervous. Examples could sound like this: Why do we help some people and not others? If we re not supposed to hit, why do some people spank their kids? If you tell a lie and no one gets hurt, why is it wrong? Our answers provide a framework for teaching spiritual values and moral issues that deal with right from wrong. We have help with these conversations. Children s Literature is often about the deepest and most profound questions and themes good and evil, right and wrong, heroism and cowardice. The story themes in Stone Soup provide even 3 yr. olds with lessons they meet in everyday life. They elicit such questions as: Have you ever wished someone would help you, but nobody did? Have you ever wanted to help someone but were afraid to? Do you know anyone who is hungry? We need to put Harry Potter, Spiderman, Superman, the Avengers, and Princess Elsa to work for us! These superheroes offer our little philosophers the language to talk about life s big questions and to draw analogies to their own lives. In doing so, we develop their spiritual language. ~Miller, Lisa, Ph. D. The Spiritual Child. New York: St. Martin s Press, 2015.
