When the groom is taken away Luke 5:33-39

Main Idea: The gospel is incompatible with every other religion including Jewish Traditionalism.

China, Walking on hot coals with pregnant wife on your back tradition

On thanksgiving, Americans mutually agree to eat as much food as possible, this tends to put them, in what they call a food coma. After several hours of eating and sleeping, they wake up only to eat pie and watch football. They are able to eat and sleep like this because they have

already accepted the fact they will gain 5-10lbs over the weekend. Then, on Thursday night, instead of going to bed, they go stand in line outside shopping malls in the freezing cold to save an extra 10 percent on stuff they don t need or really want. This is still very strange to me.

Obedience to the Scriptures = Following the traditions of the Pharisees

The Traditions The Illustrations

The Tradition

LUKE 5:33 33 Then they said to him, "John's disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink."

Fasting: a. The O.T. only required one day of fasting each year.

Fasting: b. Fasting was connected to mourning, sadness, and sorrow.

LEVITICUS 23:29 29 If any person does not practice selfdenial on this particular day, he is to be cut off from his people.

EZRA 10:6 6 Ezra then went from the house of God and walked to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib, where he spent the night. He did not eat food or drink water, because he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.

MATTHEW 9:15 15 Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests be sad while the groom is with them? The time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Fasting: c. According to the Pharisees, fasting and praying was thought to earn points with God.

MATTHEW 6:16-18 16 Whenever you fast, don't be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they make their faces unattractive so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

MATTHEW 6:16-18 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

MATTHEW 6:16-18 18 so that your fasting isn't obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

LUKE 5:33 33 Then they said to him, "John's disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink."

Why don t your disciples follow our traditions?

LUKE 5:36 36 He also told them a parable: "No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old."

ISAIAH 64:6 6 All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.

LUKE 22:16-19 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
