The Holy Eucharist The Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost November 8, 2015 11:15 am Washington National Cathedral The Entrance Rite carillon prelude Praise, my soul, the King of heaven Lauda anima; arr. James B. Slater (b.1927) organ prelude Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 720 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) introit Blessed are the pure in heart H. Walford Davies (1869 1941) Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; the secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ s abode. Still to the lowly soul he doth himself impart, and for his cradle and his throne chooseth the pure in heart. (John Keble) processional hymn 410 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven opening acclamation Come to me, all who labor and travail. And I will refresh you. Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s reign, now and for ever. Amen. Sung by all, standing. Lauda anima collect for purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. song of praise Glory to God Robert Powell (b. 1932)

The Word of God the collect of the day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. The presider prays the collect and the people respond, Amen. The people are seated. the first reading Ruth 3: 1-5; 4: 13-17 Naomi, Ruth s mother-in-law, said to her, My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you. Now here is our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do. She said to her, All that you tell me I will do. So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When they came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without next-of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughterin-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has borne him. Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her bosom, and became his nurse. The women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, A son has been born to Naomi. They named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 2

psalm 127 The choir introduces the antiphon, then all repeat. Chant: C. Hylton Stewart Unless the Lord builds the house, their labor is in vain who build it. Unless the Lord watches over the city, in vain the watchman keeps his vigil. It is in vain that you rise so early and go to bed so late; vain, too, to eat the bread of toil, for he gives to his beloved sleep. Children are a heritage from the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is a gift. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them! he shall not be put to shame when he contends with his enemies in the gate. All repeat the antiphon. the second reading Hebrews 9: 24-28 Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing and remain standing for the Gospel. hymn at the sequence 686 Come, thou fount of every blessing Nettleton 3

the holy gospel Mark 12: 38-44 Teaching in the temple, Jesus said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. the sermon Dean Hall The people stand. the nicene creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. 4

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. the prayers of the people After each intercession, Gracious God, hear our prayer. Our cry comes out to you. The presider prays the concluding collect, and the people respond, Amen. confession and absolution Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance; we have sinned in weakness; we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Savior Christ s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen. The presider offers absolution and the people respond, Amen. the peace The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. the offertory The people remain seated while an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry of sharing God s love with the world. anthem at the offertory Lord of the worlds above T. Tertius Noble (1867-1953) Lord of the worlds above, how pleasant and how fair the dwellings of thy love, thine earthly temples are. To thine abode my heart aspires, with warm desires, to see my God. They go from strength to strength through this dark vale of tears, till each arrives at length, till each in heaven appears; O glorious seat, when God our King shall thither bring our willing feet. O happy souls that pray where God appoints to hear! O happy men that pay their constant service there! They praise thee still; and happy they that love the way to Zion s hill. God is our Sun and Shield, our Light and Defence; with gifts His hands are filled, We draw our blessings thence. Thrice happy he, O God of Hosts, Whose spirit trusts Alone in Thee! (Psalm 84, para. Isaac Watts) The people stand for the presentation hymn and remain standing. hymn at the presentation 705 As those of old their first fruits brought Forest Green 5

The Holy Communion the great thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The presider offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ, and in response we sing: sanctus and benedictus R. Powell The presider gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ s passion and resurrection and prays over the bread and wine. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. the lord s prayer Notre Père, Padre nuestro, Vater unser, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 6

Gluten-free wafers are available; please make your need known to the minister. If you desire to receive prayers for healing, you are invited to proceed to War Memorial Chapel after receiving Holy Communion. anthem during the communion Panis Angelicus Cesar Franck (1822 1890) Sung in Latin. The bread of angels becomes the bread of men, the heavenly bread gives an end to earthly forms. O marvelous and wondrous sacrament: a poor man, a slave, and the humble one all ingest the Lord. O Godhead, Three and One, thee we implore: so visit us, just as now we thee adore: by thy paths lead us to where we aspire, to the light wherein thou dwellest. The people stand. postcommunion prayer Said by all Merciful God, who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life, that those who come to him should never hunger: draw us to the Lord in faith and love, that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom, where he is alive and reigns, now and forever.
