WELCOME INVOCATION CONGREGATION Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus LSB 338 Verse 1 Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel's strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art, Dear desire of ev'ry nation, Joy of ev'ry longing heart. Verse 2 Born Thy people to deliver; Born a child and yet a king! Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal Spirit Rule in all our hearts alone; By Thine all-sufficient merit Raise us to Thy glorious throne. FIFTH GRADE 1: Welcome to today s Advent service. This is the second week of Advent. Today we think about love. LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH CHILDREN Invitation to Advent (by Ruth Elaine Schram) Children: Come to us, Emmanuel. Come to us, Lord Jesus. Come to us, Emmanuel. Come and set us free. We lift our longing hearts to you. Come and bring us peace. Come to us Emmanuel. O come, Lord Jesus, come. Congregation: O come, O come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel. That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. Children: Come to us, Emmanuel. Come to us, Emmanuel. Come to us, Lord, Jesus. Come to us Emmanuel Come and bring us your light. From darkness we have called to you, praying in the night. Come to us Emmanuel. O come Lord Jesus, Come. Come to us, Emmanuel. O come, Emmanuel. 2

FOURTH GRADE 1: I have this great game. On these cards are the first words to stories. You have to guess the story Once upon a time Contestant: fairy tales 1: right! OK the next one, Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Contestant: Spongebob Squarepants 1: Good. Here s the next one A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Contestant: Star Wars 1: This one is harder it s from a book, my name is Emily Elizabeth and I have a dog Contestant: Clifford, the big red dog 1: Good. How about this one. The sun did not shine, it was too wet to play, so we sat in the house on that cold, cold wet day. Contestant: The Cat in the Hat 1: Here s the last one, In the beginning Contestants: Can we have a hint? 1: It s a book It s the greatest love story ever written Contestant: OH, Romeo and Juliet! 1: NO. It s the Bible! Contestant: The Bible?! That s not a love story! 1: Actually it is. It s the story of a Great God who loved his children so very much. Let s listen to the story. CHILDREN There Was Love Before there were shepherds out in the field Keeping watch over flocks by night Before there were wise men from distant lands Guided on by a star so bright. Before there were angels to sing the song, One Voice was singing all along. Before you and I, or the stars in the sky there was Light, There was Life, there was love. Before there were presents or Christmas trees decorated in red and green. Before there were pageants with parts to play recreating a manger scene. Before there were carols to fill the air, God s one True Light was always there. Before you and I, or the stars in the sky, There was Light, there was Life, there was Love. 3

Reader: In the beginning, before anything had ever been made, he was there with God. In him was life, and the life was the light of all people. A light shines in the darkness, And the darkness did not overcome it. Before you and I, or the stars in the sky, there was Light, there was Life, there was Love. THIRD GRADE 1: It all starts at the beginning because in the beginning, God made everything. 2: God said, Let there be, and with those words he made almost everything 3: He made all the universe, the stars, the planets, the earth and everything on it, with just his words. 4: ALMOST everything. God made people differently. People are his special creation we are hand-made. 5: But in the beginning, the first people had a choice to obey God or to not. They made the wrong choice. Sin entered the world. 6: So, in the beginning, God made a promise to save everyone, because he loves everyone. 7: John 3:16-17 says: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 8: Jesus is the Son that God sent into the world. FIFTH GRADE 1: Jesus came into the world as a little baby. He was born in stable. He was laid in a manger. 2: At Christmastime, we celebrate when Jesus came to earth. But that was only the beginning of the greatest love story. 3: Jesus did not stay a baby. He grew up. He grew in wisdom and knowledge. 4: As an adult, Jesus was the perfect example of perfect love. 5: He taught the people all about how much God loves them. He showed them love when he helped them, when he healed them, and when he forgave them. 4

6: And then he gave the ultimate demonstration of love Jesus died on the cross for us all. 7: John 15:13 says Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 8: 1 John 4:10 says This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 9: Because of the great love that God has for us, Jesus came to earth that first Christmas. 10: Because of the Great love that Jesus has for us, he was willing to die for us. 11: Because of God s great love that lives inside of us, we can love others and share His love with them. 12: That is our prayer for you too, that God s love lives inside of you too. 13: Just as it says in 1 Thessalonians 3:12 - And may the Lord make your love to grow and overflow to each other and to everyone else, just as our love does toward you. PASTOR S REFLECTION OFFERING (Gifts for the Mission of Immanuel Church and School are received.) Immanuel School Band PRAYER and LORD S PRAYER BLESSING CLOSING SONG Infant Holy, Infant Lowly AGPS 138 Verse1 Infant holy, infant lowly, For His bed a cattle stall; Oxen lowing, Little knowing Christ the child is Lord of all. Swiftly winging, Angels singing, Bells are ringing, Tidings bringing: Christ the child is Lord of all! Christ the child is Lord of all! Verse2 Flocks were sleeping, Shepherds keeping Vigil till the morning new Saw the glory, Heard the story, tidings of a Gospel true. Thus rejoicing, Free from sorrow, Praises voicing, Greet the morrow: Christ the child was born for you! Christ the child was born for you! 5
