Trinity Tidings Page Trinity Tidings TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH September, 2018 CORE VALUES AT TRINITY On August 27-28 the Ministry Architects church consultants will work with our Elders and others to define core values that reflect our Trinity DNA and shape our ministries. What do we cherish at Trinity that we seek to express in our ministries and missions. In preparation for this endeavor, I revisited our 2009 interpretation of our Trinity logo. Do you remember it s meaning? This LOGO was created by Nancy Nesvik, a Trinity member, and was approved by the Session in 2009 as we completed our ministry discernment process. Rays of Light. God s light, the light of Christ, enters the sanctuary and leaves through the cross; the three rays represent the Trinity. We WORSHIP together in this building we seek the light of Christ, we experience the light of Christ, we proclaim and share and spread the light of Christ. Oval Shape: Represents the global nature of our mission. Mt 28:20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them everything that I have command you. We witness and serve the needs of others around the world. Arc Wrapping the Oval: The white band representing God s Holy Spirit sweeps around the design, expressing God s power sweeping through the world inspiring us and equipping us and moving us. The arc is not a static closed circle, but is open on the right sides, the Spirit is open and breathing and moving, refreshing and regenerating, in motion. Images of Light remind us of I John 1:7 If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. FELLOWSHIP is developing relationships united in Christ and sharing community, sharing concern and nurture with one another. We walk in the light together with one another, for one another. Green represents life. The design hints at the green grass and sidewalk leading up to Trinity s doors. Green is the color of the Pentecost season as we grow in faith and service. The Cross: Is in a central position on the building, witnessing that the center, the balance and support of our church is Christ. We are a Christ centered church. The Cross Extends downward, inferring the sidewalks outside our doors. Think of the sign at end of our sidewalk right here beside our sanctuary: You are now entering the mission field. The sidewalk works two directions, it brings people into the church and leads them back out. We are to bring people into the church, AND bring them to Christ, bring them into a lifesaving, life giving relationship EVANGELISM); we are to build them up to Christian maturity (DISCIPLESHIP); and send them out in service to the world (MISSIONS- SERVICE -WITNESS) We ARE: A community of WITNESS - spreading the light of Christ A community of FELLOWSHIP sheltering, nurturing and caring for children of God A community of WORSHIP glorifying and praising God together A community of DISCIPLESHIP - seeking the truth, sharing the truth, growing in truth A community of SERVICE exhibiting God s kingdom of justice and righteousness on earth. I look forward to refreshing our sense of mission and what drives Trinity in our myriad ministries. We will be setting some one-year and three-year goals, and will share those with you next month after the Session has had time to pray and to refine our plans for ministry together. Hugh
Notes from Brian Page 2 Trinity Tidings Dear Friends: Thank you to all who worked to make Rally Day a success and to all those who attended and learned about our Fall programs and activities. It s easy to lose sight of all that s going on, especially when a program or activity doesn t pertain to us directly. You may not have direct involvement in our youth program, but I want to highlight what we re doing in youth ministry, so you can hold us in prayer and be encouraged through all that s happening. Following the pancakes and ice cream of Rally Day, we kicked off our youth year with a party that included a giant waterslide, hamburgers and hotdogs, games, and snow cones. It was a great way to reconnect after the summer and with over 30 youth attending it showed great promise as we continue to build up our program and reach out to new youth and families. Here s what s ahead of our youth group (Sunday s at 5:00) this month: August 26: I will begin our lesson series Finding Lasting Change in God by looking at John 2:1-11 and seeing how Jesus brought change to the wedding at Cana. We ll share dinner together, have time for recreation, hear the lesson, and dive into small groups for discussion and reflection. September 9: The youth will meet at Trinity to help prepare cupcakes and cards for Pensacola s first responders. Part of our ministry rotation includes mission and service to our local community, and we are grateful for this opportunity and the leaders of this project. September 16: We will continue in our lesson series by looking at biblical examples of people who experienced change through God. We ll be looking at what brings about change, and why God needs to redirect our paths. September 23: The youth will go to Skyzone (the indoor trampoline gym) for night of great (and hopefully safe) fun. Every month we want to include a more relaxed night of fun for our youth. They can forget the stress of school and simply enjoy the fellowship they have with one another. September 30: Another night for our lesson series. We ll focus on what happens when the change God is bringing about in our lives gets hard. Why do we want to go back to old ways? How can we persevere? Wednesday Night Suppers are right around the corner (September 5), which means more youth ministry! Senior Highs are invited to our Sr. High Starters that meets from 4:30-5:15 in the Sr. High Room. This Fall we ll spend 12 weeks studying the book of Revelation. And after supper, all youth, both Mid. and Sr. Highs can meet for a more informal time (6:15-7:00) to talk about how we apply the Bible and our Christian faith to our lives. I m grateful to have the support of the entire congregation for our youth program. In many ways you all support this ministry and make it possible. My surgery was June 4, and I have been recovering steadily since. My back is doing pretty well now. I am having some nerve pain down my right thigh to the knee that is slowly calming down. With all the prayers I ve had coming my way from you, I know that has been a big part of my recovery. It is so comforting to know there are people praying for me and my getting back to feeling fine. My sister surely goes to a caring, loving church filled with wonderful people. Again, thank you so much. The 2018-19 Legacy Concert series will feature two concerts this Fall. On Sunday, October 7, Peter Douglas, accomplished organist and accompanist will be featured. Peter will play a wide variety of organ literature on both the Taylor and Boody tracker pipe organ and the Allen digital organ. Guest performers for the concert will be the University of West Florida Singers under the direction of Dr. Peter Steenblik. The program will conclude with our own Chancel Choir joining the UWF Singers in Let All the World in Every Corner Sing, a grand anthem by Ralph Vaughan Williams. On December 2, we will present a Handbell Spectacular featuring handbell soloist, Danny Lyons and his professional handbell trio. Also on this concert will be the Christ Church Handbell Choir and the Trinity Ringers. Since this will be the first Sunday in Advent, all of the selections will be either Advent or Christmas music. Use them well to serve others. - I Peter 4:10 God has chosen us to serve others through our church and because our God-given nature is to serve, nothing can take the place of serving; hence, WE SERVE! Our Living Waters for the World mission team has answered God s call and will serve villagers in Central America by installing a clean water filtration system, educating people as to clean water health habits, and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Easter weekend last year our inaugural Jelly Bean 5K run/walk served our community with the run/ walk through our Cordova Park neighborhood. Neighbors, friends, and Trinity families all had a terrific time running, enjoying Black Jack s food truck, extending invitations to Easter Sunday service at Trinity, and raising funds to initiate our Living Waters For The World endeavor. September is Jelly Bean 5 K pledge month. For three consecutive Sundays in the Narthex the Jelly Bean Team will have available sponsorship forms and booklets by which you may show your support for the run/walk which will raise funds for the water project. Sponsorships cover the cost of the run/ walk; registrations and general gifts go to the LWW project as do proceeds from the race. You may pledge your personal or corporate financial sponsorship for the 2019 JB 5K Run. Our 2019 goal: $15,000 to give to our Mission Team for the LWW filtration system, health education project, travel and logistics. Please keep this project and the Outreach Team in your prayers, and prayerfully consider your pledge. Page 9 Trinity Tidings RENOVATION TEAM REPORT TO SESSION 4 8/25/2018 IMPORTANT DATES Vision Summit 8/27-29 Children s Summit November ACTIVE INITIATIVES Website and Church Management Software Leah McCreary, Hugh Hamilton Design activity is in progress for both the new website and database; both will create exciting new opportunities for communications and with keeping up with members and visitors. The first edition of the website will launch in September. Transition to the new database will begin in October and will be launched to the congregation in February. Children s Ministry Eileen Mignerey, Brian Yount A training session for children s Sunday School teachers, to be conducted by Brian and Ministry Architects is scheduled for this month. A timeline for children s ministry for the year is being prepared. Session Team Restructuring Hugh Hamilton, Lack Lurton Seven of the thirteen Session teams have submitted updated team mission descriptions for the Trinity Operations Manual, compiled lists of volunteers needed to execute their mission, and job descriptions for all volunteers. Updates to Session structure and general operations and bylaws are next. Operations manuals from 12 PCUSA congregations have been secured and compared as resource material. Facilities Use Policy Pat Patterson A study has been completed examining difficulties some members have expressed over the Facilities Use Policy. A report has been drafted with recommendations for presentation to the Facilities Team. Policies from other PCUSA churches have been secured for comparison. ANNUAL EVENTS Calendar Hugh Hamilton Seven of the thirteen Session teams have submitted annual calendars of major repeating events; work now begins on a comprehensive calendar. Data and dates will be included in the new website and inform our church communications management system now under construction. Develop Internal Communications Plan A strategy to more effectively use present and proposed channels of communication to and from the congregation has been developed. Staff and congregation will need to be informed and trained as to best practices and protocols in church specific communications, especially related to the new website launch (Sept 2018) and Church Community Builder database/communication system launch (Feb. 2019) No Change in Status On Line Giving; Church WIFI Improvement; Worship Visioning Summit; Develop Operations Manual

S. Lewis. Come and join us and begin to recognize and cope with the many emotions and seasons of life and identify the grieving process through stories of individuals and families touched by a significant loss who share their thoughts on the wisdom of C. S. Lewis book, A Grief Observed. The Grief Support Group will begin Monday, September 10, 2018 at 5 p.m. in Room F. This study will continue to meet on Mondays through November 12, 2018. Page 12 Trinity Tidings Back by popular demand Supper Clubs are forming now to meet for the following year. Lunch/Supper Groups are small groups meeting for food, fun and fellowship. Anyone can join couples, singles, young or old. The groups will have 6-8 people assigned whenever possible to allow the host-hostess for the month to invite additional people (perhaps new church members, prospective members or anyone who would enjoy the fun). This is a great way to broaden our friendships and connect with others in our church family! For those of you who participated in years past, the names will sound familiar: DINING IN are in-home Groups where the host/hostess rotate monthly and usually provide the main course and beverage. Others attending bring side dishes and dessert. DUTCH TREAT Groups rotate host/hostess choosing his/her favorite restaurant for the month. Each person is responsible for his/her own check. OUT-TO-LUNCH BUNCH Groups operate like the Dutch Treat Groups, rotating between host s favorite noontime eateries. You may join one or all of these Groups! Right now, we re looking for some volunteers to help out in the following positions: 1. Van Drivers. We need men to help bring our clients to court appointments, doctor s appointments, and assist with pickups and deliveries. 2. Administration Office Assistance. Anyone who can help file, proofread, assist the finance department, or has solid organizational skills would be a huge benefit. These are two big needs right now, and if anyone at your church is able to help in these areas, we d love to talk with them!
