Recent events of violence around the nation are unsettling, and they can cause a sense of fear and helplessness. However, the reality is that our Church community at St. Columba has been diligently planning and preparing for emergencies over the past year. Under the direction of Father Mcloughlin, and with the Leadership of people like Sgt. Amery Bernhardt of the Westchester County Police (Chair of Safety & Security Committee), Pat Moore (Head of Ushers and Greeters), Lieut. John Wood (Representing East Fishkill PD) and Mary Ann Servidio, RN (Chair of Medical Support Team), this preparation includes the formation of a Safety & Security Committee that has successfully implemented protocols for emergency medical response, aggressive/deadly behavior (active shooter) response, and a suspicious person/incident response. Along with these protocols, the church has created a Medical Support Team and purchased strategically placed medical equipment to support the emergency response. The Church has also partnered with the East Fishkill Police Department for active shooter training and emergency medical trauma training. The safety and security of our Church fall on the professional first responder community as well as the parishioner volunteers. These are medically trained parishioners who volunteer to assist during a medical emergency as well as many active and retired law enforcement officers who have courageously accepted the role of silent guardians during the Masses. A major commitment to the security effort comes from the ushers and greeters who have invested a significant amount of time and energy in training and service to the parish. The Safety and Security Committee has had a threat assessment conducted of the parish plant, and the recommended security updates will be forthcoming. There will also be additional training sessions to include exercising and drilling emergency protocols. Maintaining a safe place of worship is an ongoing process that the Safety and Security Committee takes very seriously. LAW ENFORCEMENT MEETING All active and retired law enforcement officers who are parishioners of St. Columba parish are strongly encouraged to attend a meeting on November 29th from 7pm to 8pm. The meeting will be held in St. Columba School and the topics to be discussed include church safety, emergency response considerations, and liability concerns. This meeting is open only to active and retired law enforcement officers. Our parish has an annual Collection for the SVDP Food Pantry. It will take place THIS Weekend, November 10-11. The Food Pantry is sponsored by the Tri-Parishes and is hosted at St. Columba. Hundreds of people are fed throughout the year. Some funds are provided by grants, others come from people like yourself who have been blessed by God and want to help others. Please remember our brothers and sisters in their time of need. Thank you for your generosity.
PARISH NEWS: Veteran s day will be observed this year on Monday, November 12. The School and Parish Offices will be CLOSED. The Adoration Chapel will be CLOSED. Morning Mass will remain at 7:00am. Don t miss this opportunity to pray for our Veterans! Father Connolly has planned a special Evening of Prayer for Liturgical Ministers on Thursday, November 15 from 7:30 9:00 p.m. in the church. Fr. Matthew Ernest, S.T.D., Professor and Director of Liturgy at St. Joseph's Seminary and Director of the Office of Liturgy of the Archdiocese of New York, will lead us in this evening of spiritual renewal for all of our wonderful liturgical ministers. If you are a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Usher, Greeter or Musician, please come. This event will be open to our Tri-Parish Churches of St. Denis & St. Kateri. Our church is equipped with the latest technology to help you hear at Mass. We have t-coil and cochlear implant devices as well as basic hearing assist devices. See one of our greeters or ushers before Mass and they will show you how everything works. We anticipate that the church will be closed for the months of June, July, August and September 2019. Firm dates will be announced in the spring. Daily Mass during that time will be in the Parish Meeting Room in our Convent or, when school is out, in the gym - cafeteria area. Weekend Masses and Confessions will be in the gym. Thankfully, all is air conditioned. Of course, the Adoration Chapel will always be available for prayer, and we will open it without formal Adoration on Saturdays and Sundays so you can make a visit. Weddings can be scheduled with our priests, who will work with couples to choose a date & time for Weddings at either St. Denis or St. Kateri. Funeral Masses will be offered by the priests of St. Columba at either St, Denis or St. Kateri - and during the summer - they can be offered in the school gym if desired. We know that this is inconvenient, but it enables work to progress more rapidly and quickly. RENEW AND REBUILD - GOAL ACCOMPLISHED!
