Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Messiah Lutheran Church Saturday, June 16, 2018 (440) 331-2405 MessiahChurchFairview.org
TO OUR GUESTS: WELCOME! We are delighted you have chosen to worship God this night here at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Saturday evening worship experience has been designed to provide a relaxed, casual atmosphere for you as we encounter together the goodness and mercy of the Lord. Everything you need for worship is contained within this bulletin. Restroom facilities are located on the ground floor off the central hallway. May you commune at Messiah? Yes, if you re a baptized communicant elsewhere and are able to respond with joyful confidence when Christ invites you to meet him in the sacrament here. As he says of the bread, This is my body, and of the cup, This is my blood ; and of both he says, given and shed for you. Our communion procedures: the sacrament is distributed at the head of the aisle. Come forward as the usher directs. For receiving the wine, two cups are available, one to drink from and a second to dip the host in. Follow your preference. If you choose not to commune but would like even so to receive a blessing, approach the pastor with your arms crossed. For a gluten-free host, quietly ask the pastor. 2
FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JUNE 16, 5:30 P.M. The congregation is invited to participate at the places marked with bold type WE PREPARE FOR GOD S GIFTS Asking God s Forgiveness In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Joined to Christ Jesus in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God s promise of mercy and forgiveness. Let us therefore turn to God in trust and hope as we make confession of our sins. Silence is kept for self-examination. Let us pray. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence. And take not your Holy Spirit from me. Give me the joy of your saving help again, And sustain me with your bountiful spirit. (Psalm 51:10-12) Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal: Have mercy and hear us. We humbly confess that we keep sinning against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we do, and by what we leave undone. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, forgive us; by the power of the Holy Spirit, rescue and restore us: that we may come before you in peace, find joy in your goodness, and serve you all our days in faith, hope and love, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. God proves his love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ and by his authority I declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 3

Sit From the Old Testament Ezekiel 17:22-24 22 Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of a cedar; I will set it out. I will break off a tender one from the topmost of its young twigs; I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23 On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it, in order that it may produce boughs and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Under it every kind of bird will live; in the shade of its branches will nest winged creatures of every kind. 24 All the trees of the field shall know that I am the LORD. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the LORD have spoken; The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. From the Book of Psalms 92:1-2, 5, 12-13 Cantor sings refrain; all sing refrain Cantor sings verses; all sing refrain Refrain 1 It is good to give thaks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High. 2 To proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night.--refrain 5 O Lord how great are your works! How deep are your designs! 12 Like a palm tree, the just will flourish and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. --Refrain 5
From a New Testament letter 2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17 6 So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. 14 For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 15 And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. 17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Stand From one of the four Gospels Mark 4:26-34 The Holy Gospel is recorded in the 4 th chapter of St. Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 26 [Jesus] said, The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But 6
when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come. 30 He also said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ Sit God s Word for Today Stand Song for Today By faith we see the hand of God In the light of creation's grand design In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness Who walk by faith and not by sight Pr. Bridger By Faith Chorus -- We will stand as children of the promise We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward Till the race is finished and the work is done We'll walk by faith and not by sight By faith the prophets saw a day When the longed-for Messiah would appear With the pow'r to break the chains of sin and death And rise triumphant from the grave -- Chorus By faith the mountain shall be moved And the pow'r of the gospel shall prevail For we know in Christ all things are possible For all who call upon His name -- Chorus CCLI Song # 5469291 Keith Getty Kristyn Getty Stuart Townend 2009 Thankyou Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing) Getty Music Publishing (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.) Confessing our Faith I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Offering our Prayers Lord, in your mercy...... hear our prayer. After each portion of the prayers: Sharing Christ s peace Sit The peace of the Lord be with you And also with you.
