OUR MISSION is to be a Spirit-filled community of love, challenging people to proclaim the good news of Christ s salvation to the world. We seek to foster and promote a life pleasing to God through prayer and sacramental ministry. We are called to nurture spiritual growth, build our lives on Gospel values and to reach out to the poor and hurting. There are so many ways to be a part of the ministries that support vocations to the priesthood, religious education and spiritual formation, families, young adults and our youth. However, all the time and talents that are graciously offered to serve the needs must be financially supported. Please consider giving generously to this year s appeal. It s a wonderful way to spread the Gospel and be engaged in the mission of Christ among us. Mailers/brochures are located in the back of the Narthex or make your donations online at www.dioceseoffresno.org/baa then click on Donate. Thank you. PAGE 6 SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 DISCARDING BLESSED ARTICLES The question comes up often, What do you do with broken rosaries or religious jewelry, worn-out scapulars or torn or damaged Holy Cards that you have had blesses by a priest or deacon? First of all, remember that they are sacramentals - that is blessed items which are meant to help focus a human mind towards a deeper awareness and love of God, but these items are not in or of themselves holy. Material things can give honor to God when used in prayer or contemplation, and are properly held in special reverence because they represent our faith, and are a means of acknowledging our dependence on God, as well as belief that God does concern Himself with our daily activities. Sacramentals are meant to be used in a holy manner, and are meant to connect the faithful to the life and times of Jesus, and not just meant to be a decorative display. In some cases, damaged rosaries or jewelry can be repaired or have medallions replaced, but most sacramentals that are damaged or worn beyond repair can be discarded. Excess Holy Water should be poured out onto the ground, and palm branches from Palm Sunday can be either tilled into the ground, or burned.
