August-September The Candlelighter St. Mary's Episcopal Church Nebraska City, Nebraska Special Events Aug 16 Women s Ministries Summer Event Aug 17 Canon Yeates Visit Aug 30th to Sept 1st Youth Group Happening Weekend Event Sept 20 Apple Jack Sack Lunch Inside this issue: Ministry Assignments 2 Lectionary Readings 2 Notice of Special Events 3 Calendars 4-5 Salad Luncheon Review 6 Youth Group Happening 7 Information 8 St. Mary St. Mary, Our Patron Saint We will be celebrating the Feast of Saint Mary, The Virgin on Sunday, August 17 and our Cannon to the Ordinary, The Rev. Canon Judi Yeates will be with us and will preach at our celebration of the Eucharist. This feast in commemoration of Mary affords us the opportunity to reflect on the Church s understanding of her, and her place in our devotions. In that second respect, The Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is the archetypical Marian devotion, and it is being recovered and reflected upon by many Protestant denominations. The first part of this prayer is simply biblical and hardly poses any theological task. It is the second part that has the punch: Hail Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.. One question posed concerns the legitimacy and necessity of invoking Mary s or any other saints prayer. It has long seemed plain to most Protestants that the invocation of saints prayers must be possible and if possible surely desirable. I certainly can ask a living fellow believer to pray for me. If death severed the fellowship of believers, I could not of course ask a departed fellow believer to pray for me. But the New Testament hardly permits us to think that death can sever the fellowship of believers our Eucharistic prayers also explicitly deny that it does. Thus there seems to be no reason why I cannot ask a departed believer to pray for me. And if I can do it, there will certainly be contexts where I should do it. Thus there should be no problem about asking Mary in her capacity as sancta, Saint Mary, to pray for us. I will leave the theological implications of referring to Mary as Mother of God for your own reflection. Fr. Rick Nursery to Honor Jacqueline Sherrow Steve Sherrow and family have asked that the memorial funds received in memory of his wife Jacqueline Sherrow be used to refurbish an area of the undercroft to serve as a nursery. Preliminary plans are to construct a half-wall with windows to the ceiling partitioning off the small corner of the undercroft which has previously served as Sunday School space and already has a wonderfully creative mural on one wall. Hopefully, enough of the funds will be left to help purchase furniture, equipment and toys for use in the nursery. Let Fr. Swenson know if you are interested in helping with the nursery when it opens. Churchill helps Candlelighter Return We have been searching for over a year for a way to publish the Candlelighter. Fortunately, Ashley Churchill has stepped forward to help with this essential ministry for our parish community. Ashley s journalism background and work on the Nebraska City High School newspaper will serve us well as she takes on responsibility for the Candlelighter. The Candlelighter will be published bi-monthly, with the next issue due October 1. Feel free to e-mail announcements, articles or suggestions to Fr. Swenson or drop them in the Newsletter mail tray in the conference room, or let Ashley know of your request or idea.
