Adopt a Teacher On November 5, we are having our 2nd annual Adopt a Teacher Program here at Asbury! This program will expand our partnership with our two adopted elementary schools, Grove Elementary in the Union Public School District, right in Asbury s backyard, and Walt Whitman Elementary in Tulsa Public Schools, located at 36th Street North. You will find not only their name, their contact information and favorite things, but also their classroom needs. We would love for each one of these teachers to be adopted, cared for and loved for the entire school year. Our heart is that you would establish a relationship with them, get to know them, help them out with their classroom needs and get to know their kids too. You can adopt an individual alone, with a group of friends or as a family. These schools are in great need of support. The majority of the school population is on free or reduced lunch. Any help or support that you can provide will be appreciated. We have many Asbury volunteers that serve throughout the year at these schools in a mentoring capacity, but we need more help. This is a perfect opportunity for people with restrictive schedules or have activities during the day to make a real and lasting difference. These teachers are excited to be partnering with you and to welcome your love and support! Questions you might have: 1. Can I share my faith in Christ with the teacher? Yes Adopt a Teacher Name: Kaitlyn Hansen Email: hanseka@tulsaschool.org Birthday: June 1 College: Oklahoma State University Favorite drink: Sweet tea Needs List: Contact paper, Construction paper, Treasure Box Items 2. What should I do first after I have adopted a teacher? The best thing to do first is to email them and introduce yourself. 3. How do you stay connected to the teacher throughout the year? Email them regularly for prayer concerns. If comfortable try to visit the class and possibly meet with the teacher for prayer during her free hour. Asbury is also going to set up a Facebook group for Grove and Walt Whitman so you can keep in touch through posts, videos and pictures. 4. How do I package my donation to the teacher or classroom? Please make sure your donation is all in one package or bag. Mark the teacher s name and school boldly on your bag. Place inside the box in the appropriate school box in the Asbury library. 5. Where do I drop off donations? Grove Donations will be picked up on Tuesday every week and delivered on Wednesday to the school. Deliver to the Asbury library and place in the appropriate box marked with your school name. Walt Whitman Donations will be dropped off every week. Deliver to the Asbury library and place in the appropriate box marked with your school name. 6. At Walt Whitman, they list treasure chest items. What does that mean? Treasure chest items are play-doh, stickers, bouncy balls, etc. This is anything that is available on the dollar aisle for kid prizes when they show good behavior.
Excerpt from the Sermon Journal, Monday, October 16, 2017 Written by Pastor Tom Harrison Parish is an unfamiliar word to many of us, but it is another way to define the membership of a local church. A parish priest has pastoral oversight for these people. John Wesley, an Anglican priest, would not be confined to this concept. He felt his calling was greater than a localized geographic area. Jesus emphasized that His disciples must love one another, which is The Great Commandment. On the other hand, Jesus also gave us The Great Commission. We are to go worldwide seeking to bring all people to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Wesley was trying to establish the worldwide church, not just his own geographic area. This explains why we are involved in missions in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the U.S.A., and around the world. We love one another AND we are trying to help others follow Jesus all over the world. Our readings this week will focus more on The Great Commission. New Midweek Class Starts November 1 Gideon Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 pm, Starts November 1, In the Parlor When we hear the name Gideon, most of us think about his 300 soldiers or the fleece he laid out under the evening sky, but Gideon s story is about God and His people, His love for them, and His strength operating in spite of their weakness. This study will encourage you to recognize your weakness as the key that the Lord gives you to unlock the full experience of His strength in your life. Led by Julie Barlow. Cost is $18. Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 pm, Starts November 1, In the Parlor Register now at myasburytulsa.org
