There are two categories of people who go to church - those who know about God, and then there are those who know God.

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

THOU HAST FOUNDED THEM FOREVER PSALMS 119:152; PROVERBS 30:5-6 Text: Proverbs 30:5-6 Psalm 119:152 152 Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever. Proverbs 30:5-6 5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. Introduction: Not only is the doctrine of the inspiration of Scripture a foundational doctrine for Bible-believing Christians, so also is the doctrine of the preservation of Scripture. Paul wrote to Timothy: 2 Timothy 3:16 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: - 1 -

Knowing that all scripture is given by inspiration of God and it is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction we must not neglect any of the Words of God. We find these words Every Word four times in the Bible. Deuteronomy 8:3 3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. Matthew 4:4 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Luke 4:4 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Proverbs 30:5 5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. - 2 -

Though the thoughts of God are important, His thoughts are expressed through His Word. If we are going to live by every Word of God, we must make sure that we have an every-word Bible. Illustration: The King James Bible is a direct translation of Scripture from the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. In it, you will find a word-for-word translation. On the other hand, most of the new version are a dynamic equivalent and not a translation at all. A dynamic equivalent combines many Greek and Hebrew texts together, and from them, exhibits a thought, i.e., a paraphrase, rather than a word-forword translation. For example: The Revised Standard Version begins John 8 with verse 12 instead of verse 1. It also leaves out verse 53 of John 7. It removes completely Mark 16:9-20, and has excluded Matthew 12:47; 17:21; 18:11; 21:44; 23:14; Mark 7:16; 9:44; 9:46; 11:26; 15:28; Luke 17:36; 22:20; 23:17; - 3 -

24:12; 24:40; John 5:4; Acts 8:37; 15:34; 24:7; 28:29; Romans 16:24; and most of 1 John 5:7. We are commanded to live by "every Word" of God. How can we live by every Word if we cannot read every Word in our Bibles? Let s Remember: 1. THE PRESENTATION OF THE WORD OF GOD The Bible has much to say about itself. Note: A. It Is Settled Psalm 119:89 89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. B. It Is Sweet Psalm 119:103 103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! C. It Is Spotless (Pure) Psalm 119:140 140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it. - 4 -

D. It Is Sound Psalm 119:160 160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. Note not only The Presentation of the Word of God but also: 2. THE PROVISION OF THE WORD OF GOD What does the Word of God provide? A. Provides Nourishment 1 Peter 2:2 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: Matthew 4:4 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 1 Corinthians 3:2 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. - 5 -

Hebrews 5:12-13 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. Psalm 19:10 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Jeremiah 15:16 16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. B. Provides Direction 2 Timothy 3:16 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: Psalm 119:105 105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. - 6 -

C. Provides Comfort 1 Thessalonians 4:18 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. Psalm 119:50 50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. D. Profitable For Doctrine, Reproof, Correction, and Instruction Doctrine What is right Reproof What is not right Correction How to get right what is not right Instruction How to keep things right E. Provides a Barrier for Sin Psalm 119:11 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. We have considered the Presentation of God s Word and the Provisions of God s Word note also: - 7 -

3. THE POWER OF THE WORD OF GOD Hebrews 4:12 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Notice: The Scriptures Are Quick The word quick means "living, life changing, blessed, not dead and lifeless." The Scriptures Are Powerful This word powerful is where we get our English word energy. It means that the Scriptures are effective, energizing, active, and shape our lives. The Scriptures Are Sharp They are a two-edged sword. They cut both ways through the excuses of men. They cut, they sting, and open wounds when sinners are confronted about their wickedness and rebellion against God. - 8 -

The Scriptures Are Piercing They penetrate the camouflage that men use to hide their sins. There is no part of man that the Word of God is prevented from penetrating. It pierces to the division of soul and spirit. The soul is the physical life of a person. The spirit is what makes up a person. It involves his mind, emotions, and his will. God pierces into the heart of a person. The Scriptures Are Discerning The word discerner means fit or skilled in judging. The Scriptures help discern the thoughts, motives, intentions, and attitudes. They get to the truth. Understand that we will be judged by the Word of God. The Bible is a living book whose author is God Himself. o The Word of God Convicts Us of Our Sins When We Stray o The Word of God Reveals Our Character and What We Really Are on the Inside - 9 -

Luke 12:2 2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. o The Word of God Reveals Our Complacency and Indifference Toward God Revelation 3:15-17 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: o The Word of God Reveals Our Concerns or Our Priorities 1 Corinthians 4:5 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. o The Word of God Cleanses the Conscience that Is Suffering Guilt - 10 -

John 15:3 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. o The Word of God Consecrates the Life of the Believer John 17:17 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. o The Word of God Comforts Us When We Suffer or Are Feeling Low Psalm 119:50 50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. Psalm 119:54 54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. o The Word of God Corrects That Which is Wrong 2 Timothy 3:16 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: - 11 -

o The Word of God Helps Us To Conquer the Shackles of Sin John 8:31-32 31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. We have considered the Presentation of God s Word, the Provisions of God s Word, and the Power of God s Word note also: 4. THE PRESERVATION OF THE WORD OF GOD A. The Word of God Has Been Preserved By God s Promises The Bible has several passages that affirm God s intention to preserve His inspired Word for all generations: Note the Old Testament Promises of Preservation: - 12 -

Psalm 12:6-7 6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. Numbers 23:19 19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Psalm 89:34 34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Isaiah 40:8 8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. Psalm 119:89 89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Note the New Testament Promises of Preservation: - 13 -

Matthew 5:18 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Matthew 24:35 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Titus 1:2 2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; 1 Peter 1:25 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. God has promised to preserve His Word! Not only has God s Word Been Preserved by God s Promises but also: B. The Word of God Has Been Preserved by God s Power In Jeremiah 36 we read the story of God giving Jeremiah revelation and inspiration to write a portion of the Word of God. - 14 -

Jeremiah writes as he is commanded and king Jehoiakim listens to the word of God. He receives illumination from the Lord, but he rejects the message. He takes the scroll Jeremiah has written and he literally cuts it to pieces and burns it in the fireplace. Jeremiah 36:23 23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth. He must have thought that destroying the written word will erase what God has said. God merely sent His Word again through the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah 36:28 28 Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned. Despite the actions of Jehoiakim, God preserved His Word! - 15 -

That is just one small picture of what God has always done in regard to protecting and preserving His Word down through the ages. Because God has preserved His word we can read it with confidence, build our lives upon it. Understand that God never re-inspired the Bible. Some think that He did in 1611, however He didn t reinspired it but He preserved His Word. Understand: Though God preserves His Word, this does not mean that it will be found in the world at large or even among churches in general. Truth is not in the majority in this age. At times the preserved Scripture can be found in small pockets, especially as the end of the age draws near. If God inspired His Word that He can also preserve His Word. We have the Word of God today and the Word of God will be here when we are long gone. We have considered the Presentation, Provision, Power, and Preservation of the Word of God. Let me close by briefly considering: - 16 -

5. OUR PRACTICE OF THE WORD OF GOD What should we do with the Bible? A. Search it John 5:39 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. Acts 17:11 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. B. Study it 2 Timothy 2:15 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 1 Corinthians 2:13 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. - 17 -

Psalm 1:2 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. C. Submit or Obey it James 1:22 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Close: God has magnified His Word above His name. Psalm 138:2 2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. The book you hold right there in your hands is the Word of God. It is perfectly infallible in its inspiration and preservation. It is called the Word, the Word of God, the Word of Christ, the Word of truth, the Holy Scriptures, the Scripture of truth, the Law of the Lord, the Sword of the Spirit, and the Oracles of God. - 18 -

It is pure, true, perfect, precious, quick, and powerful. It was written for our instruction and intended for our use. The Word of God is regenerating, quickening, illuminating, able to convert the soul, able to make the simple wise, sanctifying, faith-producing, hopeproducing, obedience producing, able to cleanse the heart, able to cleanse the way, able to keep us from a destructive path, admonishing, comforting, and heartrejoicing. It should be our standard and should be believed, applied, read, known, received, searched daily, memorized, taught to children and to all, spoken of continually, not handled deceitfully, and should be obeyed. As a Christian, you should love It exceedingly, delight in it, regard it as sweet, esteem it above all things, long after it, stand in awe of it, keep it in remembrance, hide it in our hearts, hope in it, meditate in it, rejoice in it, trust in it, obey it, and speak of it. - 19 -
